The ember is a powerful force with the potential to transform our lives and the world around us. It's the driving force behind our creativity and passion, propelling us forward in the face of obstacles and challenges. But to harness the ember's power, we must first learn to become its guardians.

As the guardians of our ember, we are responsible for nurturing and protecting our creative energy and passion. We must take ownership of our growth and development and develop the qualities and practices to help us sustain our ember over the long term.

So, what does it mean to be a guardian of the ember? And how can we develop the qualities and practices to help us become effective guardians? In this chapter, we'll explore the importance of guarding our members, the qualities of a good guardian, and the steps to becoming effective guardians.

Importance of Being a Guardian of Our Own Ember
In a world that often values conformity and the status quo, being a guardian of our members can be a radical act of self-expression and individuality. It means rejecting the notion that we must fit into a preconceived mold or follow a prescribed path and carving out our unique path based on our passions, talents, and values.

Research has shown that people who take ownership of their goals and aspirations tend to be more successful and fulfilled. In a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researchers found that people who set goals and actively pursued them were more likely to experience positive emotions, have higher self-esteem, and feel more satisfied with their lives.

Being a guardian of the ember also means being willing to take risks and embrace uncertainty. It means recognizing that failure and setbacks are inevitable parts of the creative process and can be valuable opportunities for growth and learning. By embracing risk and uncertainty, we can open ourselves to new possibilities and experiences and create original, impactful work.

One example of a guardian of the ember is artist and author Austin Kleon. In his book "Steal Like an Artist," Kleon encourages readers to take ownership of their creativity and be open to inspiration and influence from various sources. He writes, "The best advice is not to write what you know, it's to write what you like...write the book you want to read, make the movie you want to watch."

Being a guardian of the ember also means being mindful of our surroundings and the people we surround ourselves with. It means seeking out environments and communities that support our growth and development and distancing ourselves from those that stifle our creativity and passion.

In a study published in the journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, researchers found that creative people tend to have more extensive and connected brains, allowing them to make more novel and original connections between ideas. However, the study also found that creative people are more sensitive to their environments and can be easily influenced by negative feedback or criticism. This underscores the importance of being a guardian of our ember and cultivating environments and communities that support our creative energy and passion.

In conclusion, being a guardian of our ember is crucial to our growth and development as creative individuals. It means taking ownership of our goals and aspirations, embracing risk and uncertainty, and surrounding ourselves with environments and communities supporting our creative energy and passion. By being a guardian of our members, we can unleash our full creative potential, achieve our goals and aspirations, and leave a lasting legacy that inspires others to do the same.

Qualities of a Good Guardian

To become an effective guardian of the ember, we should cultivate several essential qualities. These include:

Resilience - The ability to bounce back from setbacks and challenges is essential to being a good guardian of the ember. Resilience allows us to persevere in the face of obstacles and setbacks and to maintain our creative energy and passion over the long term.

Self-Awareness - Good guardians of the ember are aware of their strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies. They understand their creative processes and what fuels their passion, and they use this self-awareness to make informed decisions and take purposeful action.

Perseverance—Good guardians of the ember are persistent and determined. They are willing to put in the hard work and effort required to achieve their goals and aspirations and don't give up easily.

Self-Discipline - Good guardians of the ember have the self-discipline to stay focused and motivated, even in the face of distractions and competing priorities. They develop habits and routines that support their creative energy and passion and stick to them consistently.

Adaptability - Good guardians of the ember are adaptable and open to change. They are willing to experiment and try new things and are not afraid to pivot when their creative energy and passion take them in a different direction.

Steps to Becoming a Good Guardian

So, how can we become effective guardians of our members? Here are some steps to get started:

Set clear goals and aspirations—To be effective guardians of the ember, we must first know what we're working towards. Set clear, specific, and achievable goals for yourself and use them as a guidepost for your creative energy and passion.

Develop self-awareness—Reflect on your creative processes and what fuels your passion. Understand your strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies, and use this self-awareness to make informed decisions and take purposeful action.

Build resilience—Resilience is critical to being a good guardian of the ember. Cultivate resilience by developing a growth mindset, reframing setbacks as opportunities for learning, and practicing self-compassion.

Establish habits and routines - Establishing habits and routines that support your creative energy and passion can help you stay focused and motivated over the long term. Develop a daily practice of creativity or set aside specific blocks of time for pursuing your passions.

Seek support and accountability—Building a community of like-minded individuals who can offer support, encouragement, and feedback is essential to being an effective guardian of the ember. Seek mentors, coaches, or peers who can help keep you accountable and provide valuable insights and feedback.

Embrace experimentation and adaptation - Being a good guardian of the ember means being open to experimentation and adaptation. Don't be afraid to try new things or pivot when your creative energy and passion take you in a different direction. Embrace the journey and trust in your intuition and instincts.

By taking these steps, we can become more effective guardians of our ember and nurture and protect our creative energy and passion over the long term. We can develop the qualities and practices to help us achieve our goals and aspirations and leave a lasting legacy of excellence and impact.

In conclusion, being a guardian of the ember is essential to unleashing our full creative potential and pursuing our passions and aspirations with unwavering determination and purpose. By cultivating resilience, self-awareness, perseverance, self-discipline, and adaptability, we can become more effective guardians of our ember and achieve our desired excellence and fulfillment.

As we all read this book together, drawn by a shared yearning to stoke the flames of our creativity and passion, let us anchor ourselves in a truth that has withstood the test of time: we are called to be the guardians of our ember. This ember, the divine spark within us, is a testament to our Creator's intention that we live lives marked not by mediocrity but by profound creativity and passion.

In the Scriptures, we find a resounding call to this guardianship. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Philippians, urges us, "Work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure" (Philippians 2:12-13). Here, Paul is not merely speaking of our spiritual walk but of the divine partnership in which God's creative power works within us, urging us towards excellence and innovation in all areas of our lives.

To be a guardian of the ember is to recognize that this divine spark is a gift entrusted to us by God, not to be hidden away but to be nurtured, developed, and shared. It is to embrace the truth that our creativity is not for our glory but for His, a means through which His splendor and love can be made known in this world.

Jesus, in His teaching, tells us, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden" (Matthew 5:14). Our ember, this light within us, is meant to shine brightly, illuminating the darkness, inspiring hope, and drawing others to the warmth of God's love. To hide this light, to let the embers of our passion and creativity die out, is to diminish the purpose for which we were created.

But let us not be naïve; the path of a guardian is fraught with challenges. Doubt, fear, rejection, and criticism loom as formidable adversaries, each seeking to extinguish our flame. Yet, we are not left defenseless. The Apostle James offers this encouragement, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance" (James 1:2-3). Each challenge we overcome, each barrier we breach, serves only to fan our ember into a blazing fire, a testament to our resilience and God's sustaining power.

How, then, do we cultivate the qualities of a steadfast guardian? It begins with faith, a deep-rooted belief in the God who has called us to live lives of creative purpose. It is nurtured through prayer, seeking God's guidance and strength in moments of doubt and fear. It is sustained by fellowship, the support and encouragement of a community that sees the divine spark within us and helps fan it into flame.

As guardians of our members, we are called to a life of discipline and dedication. We are urged to clothe ourselves in humility, understanding that our creativity is a gift to be used in service to others. And we are reminded to keep our hearts and minds open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to direct our paths and inspire our endeavors.

So, let us embrace our calling as guardians of the ember. Let us live boldly, love deeply, and create with the enthusiasm of those who know their purpose is divinely inspired. May our lives reflect the Creator's beauty, complexity, and love, and may the light of our ember shine so brightly that it draws others to the warmth and hope found only in Him.

Remember, the journey of a guardian is not a solitary trek but a shared adventure. Together, let us ignite the world with the beauty of our creativity, the depth of our passion, and the love of our Creator. Let us be the guardians of the ember and, in doing so, reveal the face of God to a world in desperate need of His light.

Ember Book - Chapter 2 - The Dangers

As we embark on our journey to pursue our passions and nurture our creativity, we must be aware of the many dangers that threaten the existence of our ember. These threats can take many forms, but they all share the common goal of snuffing out our flame and preventing us from achieving the excellence and fulfillment we desire.

Doubt, fear, rejection, and criticism are the most common threats to our members. These threats can be especially damaging to our creative energy and passion, as they attack the essence of who we are as individuals and the driving force behind our pursuit of excellence.

Doubt is one of the most insidious threats to our embers. The voice tells us that we're not good enough, that our ideas are not worthy, and that we'll never be able to achieve our goals and aspirations. Doubt can be particularly damaging because it's often internalized, coming from within our minds and manifesting as negative self-talk and self-doubt.

Fear is another potent threat to our embers. It can take many forms, from fear of failure to fear of rejection, and can paralyze us into inaction and prevent us from pursuing our passions and aspirations. Fear can be particularly insidious because it often masquerades as practicality or realism, convincing us that we're being rational and prudent by avoiding risk and staying in our comfort zones.

Rejection is another threat to our embers, particularly in the creative fields. Whether it's rejection from publishers, galleries, or audiences, the feeling of not being accepted or appreciated can devastate our creative energy and passion. Rejection can make us feel like we're not good enough, that our ideas are not worthy, and that we'll never be able to achieve the level of success and recognition we desire.

Criticism is another potent threat to our embers, particularly when harsh or unconstructive. It can make us feel like our ideas and work are not valuable and damage our confidence and self-esteem. It can be particularly challenging to receive criticism from people we respect or admire, as their opinions can carry more weight and influence our perceptions of our work.

Given the many dangers that threaten our embers, we must take steps to protect ourselves.

This means cultivating resilience, developing coping mechanisms, and surrounding ourselves with positive and supportive people.

One of the most important steps we can take is to practice self-care. This means taking care of ourselves physically, emotionally, and mentally and giving ourselves the time and space to recharge and refuel. Self-care can take many forms, from exercise and healthy eating to meditation and therapy, and it's essential to find the self-care practices that work best for us.

Another critical step is to cultivate a growth mindset. This means reframing our challenges and setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth and viewing criticism and rejection as feedback that can help us improve and refine our work. By adopting a growth mindset, we can develop a sense of resilience and a willingness to take risks and pursue our passions, even in the face of obstacles.

Finally, it's essential to surround ourselves with positive and supportive people. This means seeking mentors, coaches, and peers who can offer feedback, encouragement, and support and believe in our ability to achieve our goals and aspirations. By building a community of like-minded individuals, we can create a sense of belonging and accountability and help each other to stay on track and continue pursuing our passions and aspirations.

In conclusion, there are many threats to our members. Still, with the right mindset, practices, and support, we can protect ourselves and continue to pursue our passions and aspirations with unwavering determination and purpose by recognizing the dangers that threaten our ember.

One scientific study that sheds light on the dangers that threaten our ember is a research article published in the Journal of Creative Behavior titled "The Impact of Criticism on Creativity: An Experimental Investigation." In this study, researchers found that harsh and unconstructive criticism can significantly negatively impact an individual's creativity and ability to generate innovative ideas.

The study involved two groups of participants who were asked to develop as many creative uses for a paper clip as possible. One group received constructive feedback on their ideas, while the other received harsh and negative criticism. The researchers found that the group that received negative criticism generated significantly fewer creative ideas than the group that received constructive feedback.

These findings underscore the importance of protecting our ember from destructive criticism and negativity. When we receive harsh or unconstructive criticism, it can damage our confidence and self-esteem and make us less willing to take risks and pursue our passions. By surrounding ourselves with positive and supportive people who offer constructive feedback and encouragement, we can continue to nurture our ember and unleash our full creative potential.

Scientific research has shown that dangers threatening our ember, such as harsh criticism, can significantly negatively impact our creativity and passion. By protecting ourselves and cultivating resilience, we can continue to pursue our passions and aspirations with confidence and purpose.

In navigating the perils that menace our ember—doubt, fear, rejection, and criticism—Christian teachings and the wisdom found in the Bible provide a beacon of hope and a framework for resilience. While daunting, these challenges are not unique to our era or the pursuit of creativity alone. They have been encountered by faithful servants throughout history, who have overcome them through faith, perseverance, and reliance on God's promises.

The Apostle Paul's letters to the early Christians are particularly resonant with encouragement to face such trials. In Romans 5:3-5, Paul writes, "Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us." This passage underscores the transformative power of adversity, molding us into individuals of more robust character and deeper faith, leading us to unashamed hope because it is grounded in God's love.

Moreover, the concept of fear, especially fear of failure, is addressed in 2 Timothy 1:7, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and love and a sound mind." This verse reminds us that fear does not emanate from God. Instead, we are endowed with power, love, and sound judgment—tools far more conducive to nurturing our ember of creativity and passion. When fear seeks to paralyze us, we are called to remember that our spirit, given by God, is designed to overcome such obstacles.

Facing criticism and rejection, too, can be seen through a biblical lens. Proverbs 27:17, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another," suggests that constructive feedback can refine and improve us, even when it feels like criticism. It's a call to embrace community and the voices of those who challenge us to grow, recognizing that our creative journey is not solitary but communal, benefiting from the wisdom and input of others.

Jesus Himself, in the Beatitudes, blesses those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 5:10). This principle can extend to the realm of creativity and passion; those who face rejection and criticism for their authentic expression and pursuit of their God-given talents are, in a way, participating in a form of righteousness, striving towards the good and the true in their work.

In practical terms, Christians are encouraged to "cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7). This invitation to lay our doubts, fears, rejection, and criticism at Jesus' feet is a profound method of self-care and spiritual resilience. It reassures us that we are not alone in our struggles and have a Heavenly Father who cares deeply for our well-being and creative spirit.

The threats to our ember of creativity and passion are significant but not insurmountable. By leaning on the eternal truths in Scripture and embracing the community of faith, we can see the strength to protect our ember from the winds of doubt, fear, rejection, and criticism. Let us then move forward with courage, armed with the power of love and a sound mind given by God, to pursue our passions and let our creativity shine to the glory of God.

Ember Book - Chapter 1 - The Ember

Corporate America can be a challenging place for creative individuals. Research shows that the demands of the corporate environment can lead to a decline in creativity and innovation. According to a study by Adobe, only 25% of employees feel that they are living up to their creative potential at work. This is a concerning statistic, as creativity is a crucial driver of success in today's rapidly changing business landscape.

But why is creativity so important in the corporate world? In his book "The Creative Mindset," Jeff DeGraff writes, "Creativity is the key to innovation, and innovation is the key to success in the knowledge economy." In other words, creativity is essential to staying competitive and relevant in a world where knowledge and ideas are highly valued.

However, for many creative individuals working in corporate America, the daily grind of meetings, emails, and deadlines can cause their creative spark, or "ember," to flicker and fade. They may question whether their creativity is valued or relevant in the corporate world.

"Ember: Lighting a Fire in Your Soul for Change" comes here. This book offers guidance and encouragement for creative individuals navigating the corporate landscape through personal anecdotes, research findings, and practical strategies. It emphasizes the importance of protecting and nurturing one's creative spark, or "ember," while working in a corporate environment.

As author and entrepreneur Seth Godin has said, "Creativity isn't about compliance; it's about freedom." In a world where conformity and standardization are often rewarded, it can be easy to forget the power and value of creativity. But with Ember, creative individuals can reclaim their power, cultivate their imagination, and thrive in the corporate world.

Before you turn the page and embark on this journey, I want to leave you with a final thought:

Your creative spark is valuable, meaningful, and worthy of protection.

Whether you work in corporate America or pursue your creative passions outside of work, you have a unique perspective and a valuable contribution to make to the world.

Remember that guarding your creative ember is about protecting your passion and joy and positively impacting those around you. By nurturing your creativity and using it to its fullest potential, you can inspire and uplift others, spark change and innovation, and leave a legacy that will endure for generations.

So take a deep breath, open your mind and heart, and let this book guide you as you guard your creative spark. Embrace the challenges, celebrate the successes, and always remember you can achieve greatness.

Let us begin.

Creativity and passion drive people to create, innovate, and pursue excellence. Whether in the arts, sciences, or business, the ability to think creatively and harness one’s passions sets individuals and organizations apart.

At the heart of this pursuit of excellence lies the ember, the flickering flame of creativity and passion that burns within us all. The ember is the essence of our being, the spark that ignites our soul and sets us apart.

So, what exactly is the ember?

The ember is the manifestation of our creativity and passion. It's the driving force behind our desire to create, innovate, and express ourselves in unique and meaningful ways. It propels us forward in the face of obstacles and inspires us to pursue our dreams and goals with unwavering determination.

The ember can take many forms, from a budding idea or a spark of inspiration to a fully formed vision or work of art. But no matter its form, the ember is a powerful force that has the potential to change lives, transform societies, and profoundly impact the world.

Without the ember, our lives can become dull and unfulfilling. We may find ourselves going through the motions, needing more purpose and direction, and feeling disconnected from our passions and aspirations. But with the ember, we have the potential to achieve greatness, express ourselves in meaningful and impactful ways, and create a lasting legacy for ourselves and others.

That's why it's so important to understand the power of the ember and nurture, protect, and help it grow. Doing so can unleash our full creative potential, tap into our passions and aspirations, and achieve our desired excellence and fulfillment.

In this book, we'll explore the many facets of the ember, from its importance as the driving force behind creativity and passion to the dangers that threaten its existence. We'll discuss the qualities of a good guardian of the ember, the techniques and practices for fanning the flames of our passion, and the different forms of fuel that can help us sustain our creative energy over the long term.

We'll also explore the importance of community, feedback, and self-care in our pursuit of excellence and how to overcome the many obstacles and challenges we'll likely face. Finally, we'll reflect on the legacy we leave behind as creative individuals and how to continue nurturing and protecting our ember throughout our lives.

By the end of this book, you'll have a deeper understanding of the power of the ember and how to harness it to achieve excellence in all aspects of your life. You'll have the tools, techniques, and strategies to help you unleash your full creative potential and pursue your passions and aspirations with unwavering determination and purpose.

We all have an ember burning within us, waiting to be ignited and to unleash our full creative potential. This ember is the foundation of our passions and aspirations, the fuel that drives us to pursue excellence and make a lasting impact on the world.

But too often, we let the demands of life smother our ember, extinguishing our passions and leaving us feeling unfulfilled and disconnected from our purpose. We may be tempted to ignore our creative impulses to pursue stability and security, but this only leads to mediocrity and regret.

That's why it's so important to recognize the ember's power and nurture it with care and attention. Doing so allows us to reignite our passions, tap into our creative potential, and create a life of purpose and fulfillment.

Throughout this book, we'll explore the many facets of the ember, from its importance as the driving force behind creativity and passion to the dangers that threaten its existence. We'll delve into the qualities of a good guardian of the ember, the techniques and practices for fanning the flames of our passion, and the different forms of fuel that can help us sustain our creative energy over the long term.

We'll also discuss the role of community, feedback, and self-care in our pursuit of excellence and the importance of having a clear vision and the courage to face challenges and setbacks. And finally, we'll reflect on the legacy we leave behind as creative individuals and the ongoing journey of nurturing and protecting our ember throughout our lives.

By the end of this book, you'll have the tools and strategies to unleash your full creative potential and pursue your passions with purpose and determination. Let's embark on this journey together and discover the power of the ember to transform our lives and the world around us.

Symbolized through the powerful imagery of the ember, it's essential to root our understanding in a foundation that transcends our individual experiences. The teachings of Christianity offer a profound perspective on the nature of creativity and the passion that fuels it, encapsulating these concepts within the broader narrative of divine inspiration and purpose.

Though not a textbook on creativity, the Bible provides ample evidence of God's value on creative expression and passionate pursuit. In Exodus 35:31-32, we see God endowing Bezalel with the Spirit of God in wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and all manner of artistry to design artistic works. Here, creativity is not merely an individual pursuit but a divine gift intended to beautify the world and fulfill God's commandments.

Similarly, the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30 speaks to the heart of using our God-given gifts, not merely for personal gain but for enriching the world and glorifying God. The master's reprimand of the servant who buried his talent is a stark reminder that to ignore or suppress our creative ember is to deny the purpose for which we were created.

As Christians, we are called to reflect the Creator's image; in doing so, our creativity becomes a form of worship. Through our passions and creative endeavors, we can return something beautiful to God, serve our communities, and make a meaningful impact. The ember within us, therefore, is not just a spark of personal ambition but a divine flame that compels us to create, innovate, and excel.

To nurture this ember is to engage in a spiritual act of stewardship. It requires dedication, discipline, and continuous learning and growth. Protecting and fostering our creativity involves understanding its value, recognizing the obstacles that can dampen it, and employing strategies to ensure it flourishes.

Let us remember that the ember of creativity and passion within us is a gift from God entrusted to us for a purpose. It is our responsibility and joy to fan this flame, to let it illuminate our path and guide us in our pursuit of excellence. May we approach this task with humility, courage, and an unwavering faith in the One who inspires all creativity.
Let this be the legacy we leave behind: lives marked by vibrant creativity, passionate pursuits, and a dedication to reflecting the divine in all we do. As guardians of the ember, may we inspire others to recognize and nurture the flame within themselves, fostering a world rich in innovation, beauty, and spiritual depth.

Protecting Little Minds: Guarding Kids from Negative Media

2/25/2025

Written by: Layne McDonald, Ph.D.

”I will set nothing wicked before my eyes." – Psalm 101:3
In a world filled with glowing screens and endless streams of content, protecting our children’s minds has never been more crucial. The media they consume shapes their hearts, their thoughts, and their values. As parents, we’re called to guard their innocence and guide their focus toward what is pure and good.

The Power of Guarding What They See
The average child spends 7 hours a day on screens, according to the CDC. That’s more time than they spend in school or with family. With so much influence from digital media, intentionality is key to helping them grow in Christ while shielding them from harm.

Practical Steps to Protect and Uplift
  1. Use Parental Controls
Take advantage of parental controls on devices and apps to filter out harmful content. These tools are a simple but powerful way to safeguard what your kids are exposed to.
  2. Set Screen-Free Zones
Designate areas like bedrooms or the dinner table as screen-free zones. These boundaries create space for connection, rest, and meaningful conversations.
  3. Replace Harmful Media with Uplifting Content
Introduce your kids to wholesome alternatives, like Bible-based cartoons, worship music, or faith-filled podcasts. Fill their minds with messages that point them to God’s love and truth.

A Parent’s Calling
Guiding our children’s media habits isn’t about isolating them from the world—it’s about equipping them to navigate it with wisdom and discernment. By setting godly standards and modeling them ourselves, we give our kids the tools to guard their hearts and honor God in a digital age.
