Book: Raising Children in Christ: Introduction: The Sacred Art of Parenting

Raising Children in Christ Back Cover

Hey parents, let’s take a breath for a second. If you’re reading this, you’ve likely survived another day of sticky handprints, endless "why" questions, and perhaps a mild negotiation over why we can't wear a Batman cape to a wedding. Parenting is a wild, beautiful, exhausting, and utterly sacred journey. It is, quite literally, an art form, one where the "canvas" is a human soul, and the "medium" is a messy blend of grace, truth, and a whole lot of coffee.

Welcome to the start of a new journey together. This isn't just another parenting book filled with "do this and you'll get that" formulas. We know those don't always work because children aren't robots; they are image-bearers of the Living God. This is Raising Children in Christ, a deep dive into the heart of what it means to steward the lives entrusted to us by the Father.

The Sacred Art of Parenting

"Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him." , Psalm 127:3

Parenting isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s a ride filled with sleepless nights and moments of absolute awe. If you've ever found yourself on the verge of tears because your toddler decided the family dog needed a peanut butter makeover, then you know parenting is equal parts messy and miraculous.

God, in His infinite wisdom, chose you, yes, you, to raise these specific children. Let that sink in. You’re not just a parent; you’re a shepherd, guiding your little flock through the valleys and mountaintops of life. But here’s the good news: you’re not alone. God’s Word is filled with wisdom, and His Spirit equips us for the journey.

This book is not about perfect parenting. There’s no such thing. Instead, it’s about intentional, grace-filled parenting that points our children to Jesus. Along the way, we’ll explore biblical truths, practical steps, funny moments, and powerful reflections to help you raise children who understand mercy, walk in love, extend grace, cling to hope, and forgive freely.

So, grab a cup of coffee, or reheat the one that’s been sitting on the counter all morning, and let’s dive into the sacred art of parenting.

Project Mission: Why "Raising Children in Christ"?

Our mission with this project is simple yet profound: to create Christian parenting resources that actually move the needle in your home. We want to help you move from survival mode to discipleship mode.

In a world that is increasingly loud, confused, and often hostile to biblical values, our children need a firm foundation. They need more than just "good morals"; they need a transformative relationship with Jesus Christ. This book serves as a roadmap for parents to:

  • Understand the primary role of the parent as a disciple-maker.

  • Cultivate a home atmosphere where the Holy Spirit is welcome.

  • Bridge the gap between Sunday morning church and Tuesday afternoon reality.

  • Equip children with biblical discernment to navigate modern culture.

  • Build lasting bonds of trust and love that survive the teen years and beyond.

We believe that when parents are equipped and encouraged, the entire trajectory of a family changes. This is our "Kingdom work", raising the next generation of Kingdom builders.

The Dedication

To the parents who pray in the quiet moments, who forgive more times than they can count, and who love even when it’s hard, this book is for you.

To my own family, who taught me what love and grace look like in action, you are my greatest blessing.

And above all, to Jesus Christ, the perfect example of love, mercy, and forgiveness, may this book bring glory to You.

Author’s Notes: A Note from the Heart

The idea for this book was born from countless conversations with parents, friends, church members, and even strangers in the grocery store aisle, who all shared the same question: How do I raise my children in a way that honors God?

As a parent myself, I’ve wrestled with this question too. I’ve felt the sting of failure on days when my patience ran out and the joy of success in moments of deep connection with my children. Through it all, I’ve learned this: parenting is less about having all the answers and more about pointing our children to the One who does.

This book is a culmination of lessons I’ve learned from Scripture, personal experience, and the wisdom of others. My prayer is that it will feel like a conversation with a friend, a friend who knows what it’s like to navigate the ups and downs of parenting with faith, humor, and grace. We are in this together.

The Foundation: Scripture-First Parenting

In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe that the Holy Spirit is our "Paraclete", our Helper. When we talk about raising children in Christ, we are talking about a Spirit-empowered endeavor. You cannot do this in your own strength, and God never intended for you to.

The biblical foundation for our work rests on two primary pillars:

1. The Deuteronomy 6 Mandate

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." (Deuteronomy 6:5-7)

Notice the order. First, the commandments are on your heart. You cannot pass on what you do not possess. Discipleship isn't a classroom subject; it's a lifestyle. It happens "on the road" and "at the table." It’s about making the presence of God a natural, normal part of your daily rhythm.

2. The Ephesians 6 Command

"Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." (Ephesians 6:4)

This is a call to balance. We are called to "train" and "instruct" (which involves discipline and boundaries), but we are also warned not to "exasperate." This means our parenting must be rooted in relationship. Correction without connection leads to rebellion. We want to shepherd the heart, not just control the behavior.

Understanding the Journey: The 5 Stages of Discipleship

One of the biggest mistakes we make as parents is treating a 4-year-old like a 14-year-old, or vice versa. Biblical parenting requires discernment of the season your child is in. As we journey through the 20 chapters of this book, we will reference these five essential stages:

  1. Dedication (Infancy): This is the season of laying the groundwork. We dedicate our children to the Lord, but we also dedicate ourselves to the task of consistent, nurturing care that mirrors God’s faithfulness.

  2. Discipline (Early Childhood): This is the "Rescue" stage. We are rescuing our children from their own foolishness through loving, consistent boundaries. We teach them that choices have consequences, a lesson that reflects God's justice and mercy.

  3. Direction (Primary Years): During these years, we are building the "Family Altar." We are shaping their worldview, teaching them the stories of the Bible, and helping them understand who God is.

  4. Discernment (Preteens/Teens): Our role shifts from "Commander" to "Coach." We help them evaluate the world through a biblical lens. We want them to know why they believe what they believe.

  5. Detachment (Young Adulthood): The final release. We move to a "Consultant" role, praying fervently as they stand before God on their own two feet, owning their faith and their future.

Daily Devotionals for Families: Creating a Rhythm of Grace

We often hear from parents who say, "I want to do family devotions, but it’s just so awkward." Or, "My kids won't sit still for five minutes."

Listen: Your family altar doesn't have to look like a mini-church service. It can be a "Gratitude Game" at dinner. It can be a five-minute prayer before bed. It can be listening to a worship song in the car.

The goal of daily devotionals for families is simply to acknowledge that God is the center of your home. In the chapters to come, we will provide practical "Discipleship Drills" and "Faith Questions" to help you break the ice. We want to move away from "formal and forced" and toward "natural and needed."

The Road Ahead: What to Expect

In this 20-chapter deep dive, we are going to cover the essential components of a Christ-centered home. Here is a glimpse of what’s coming:

  • The Foundation of Love: Why love is the soil in which every other virtue grows (1 Peter 4:8).

  • Mercy & Grace: Learning to parent the way God parents us, with high standards and even higher grace.

  • The Power of Forgiveness: How to model "I'm sorry" and "I forgive you" within the four walls of your home.

  • Creating a Culture of Joy: Why laughter is a spiritual discipline and a defense against the darkness of the world.

  • Navigating Culture with Wisdom: Helping our children develop a "Miracle Mindset" in a world of skepticism.

  • The Family Altar: Practical ways to build a lifestyle of worship and prayer.

Each chapter will include a "Parent's Reflection," a "Family Action Step," and a closing prayer. We aren't just giving you information; we are giving you a toolkit.

Epilogue: The Eternal Perspective

As we begin this series, let’s keep the end in mind. One day, the toys will be put away for the last time. The house will be quiet. The "sticky finger" phase will be a distant memory.

In that day, what will matter most isn't whether your child was the star athlete or the straight-A student. What will matter is whether they know the Shepherd. What will matter is whether they have a faith that can withstand the storms of life.

Parenting is the only "job" where the goal is to work yourself out of a position. We are raising adults, not just children. We are raising disciples, not just "good kids." It is a high calling, and yes, it is a heavy one. But the One who called you is faithful, and He will do it.

He is the Master Artist. You are just the brush in His hand. Let’s see what beautiful masterpiece He wants to create in your family.
