Dr. Mac Christian Movie Reviews: Coraline (2009)

Numerous buttons with four holes each are scattered closely together against a white background, creating a vivid and bright display. Creepy button eyes movie review for Tim Burton's "Coraline" “It looks like Tim Burton-lite fun for kids… but behind the button eyes lurks witchcraft, manipulation, and genuine terror.” 🗣️ Language & Profanity Mild insults like “jerk,” “idiot,” and “rat.” No outright profanity, but the spiritual content is far more concerning than words. 😬 Inappropriate or...

😬 Inappropriate or Questionable Content Occult Themes: The “Other Mother” is a full-on witch figure who lures Coraline with food, toys, and love — only to demand her soul. Demonic Imagery: Button eyes = symbolic blindness, spiritual deception. The alternate world has demonic undertones: souls trapped, rituals, possession-like control. Fear Factor: Dark, creepy visuals that can cause nightmares in kids (and maybe in adults, too). Family Undermining: The real parents are portrayed as dull, distracted, and uncaring, while the “Other Mother” offers temptation through attention and treats — a satanic parallel to false gods offering false comfort. ✝️ The Christian Parent Grading Scale Category Grade Explanation Biblical Truth & Redemption D A faint whisper of bravery, but drowning in occult imagery. Suitability for Kids (6–12) D Highly disturbing for children — nightmares guaranteed. Language & Cleanliness B+ Mild words, but overshadowed by demonic visuals. Family & Emotional Engagement C Shows curiosity and courage, but undermines parents. Overall Christian Values D Heavy occult imagery, deceptive worldview. 🛠️ The Filter Fix VidAngel/Enjoy Movies Your Way can mute insults, but cannot remove the heavy spiritual darkness. Parents, if you do allow viewing, you’ll need a serious debrief afterward — talking about spiritual deception, witchcraft, and why the Bible warns us against playing with darkness (Ephesians 5:11). 🧑‍⚕️ Dr. Mac’s Verdict 🚦 Red Light — This is not a kids’ movie. It’s a slick, creepy fairytale with occult overtones that teaches kids to trust a witch instead of their parents. For Christian families, the danger outweighs any artistic value.
