I've watched too many talented leaders and creators dim their light because they were terrified of being "too much." They started compromising. Editing themselves. Muting the very thing that made them powerful in the first place. Here's what I've learned after years of coaching leaders, pastoring churches, and creating content: finding your voice isn't about becoming someone new: it's about remembering who God made you to be. Your voice isn't something you invent. It's something you uncover. The Soul Voice vs. The Survival Voice Most of us spend years operating from what I call the "survival voice." That's the voice shaped by fear, comparison, and the desperate need to fit in. It asks questions like: What will people think? Is this safe enough? Will this offend anyone? Am I allowed to say this? But buried beneath all that noise is your Soul Voice : the one that lights you up, reminds you what you're passionate about, and points you toward your God-given purpose. Your Soul Voice doesn't scream. It whispers. And most of the time, we're too busy performing to hear it. The Layers That Hide Your True Voice Think about it: from the time you were a kid, people have been telling you who to be. Teachers, parents, friends, social media algorithms: everyone had an opinion about what was "appropriate" or "acceptable." Over time, those opinions became layers. Like paint on a canvas, they covered up the original masterpiece God designed. Finding your voice means scraping off those layers. It means asking hard questions: Which parts of my personality have I hidden to please others? What dreams did I abandon because someone said they were unrealistic? When did I stop trusting my own instincts? Where have I traded authenticity for approval? This isn't comfortable work. But it's holy work. Your Voice Is a Muscle of the Soul Here's something powerful: your voice: both literal and metaphorical: is deeply connected to your core identity. When you speak truth, when you create from an authentic place, you're not just communicating. You're revealing your soul. That's why it feels so vulnerable. But here's the thing: God didn't give you a spirit of fear. He gave you power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). That "sound mind" includes clarity about who you are and what you're called to say. When you hide your voice, you're not being humble. You're robbing the world of what only you can give. I'm not talking about being loud or obnoxious. I'm talking about being present. Being real. Being willing to show up as yourself, even when it's scary. Authenticity Protects Your Soul Some people think that "finding your voice" means losing yourself in the noise. They worry that speaking up will make them prideful or self-centered. But I've found the opposite is true. Authenticity actually protects your soul. When you're constantly performing, pretending, or people-pleasing, you exhaust yourself. You lose touch with who you really are. You start making decisions based on what others expect instead of what God is calling you to. That's when burnout happens. That's when resentment creeps in. That's when you wake up one day and realize you don't recognize the person in the mirror. But when you align your actions with your authentic voice: when you live and lead from the inside out: you tap into a different kind of energy. It's sustainable. It's joyful. It's powerful. Staying True to Your Mission Here's where it gets practical. How do you actually stay true to your mission when everyone around you is pulling you in different directions? First, get clear on what your mission actually is. Not what you think it should be. Not what would impress people. What is God calling you to do? Write it down. Say it out loud. Let it become your North Star. Second, guard your input. You become what you consume. If you're constantly scrolling through everyone else's highlight reel, comparing your behind-the-scenes to their polished feed, you'll lose your voice fast. Be intentional about what voices you let into your life. Surround yourself with people who call out the gold in you, not the ones who keep you small. Third, practice showing up as yourself. Start small if you need to. Share one honest thought. Post one piece of content that feels a little too vulnerable. Have one conversation where you don't edit yourself. The more you practice, the stronger your voice gets. The Main Thing I tell my teams all the time: keep the main thing the main thing. And the main thing is always Jesus and loving others the way He would. Your voice matters because you're made in the image of God. But your voice is never about you. It's about pointing people toward Him. When you find your authentic voice and use it to love people well, to speak truth, to create beauty, to lead with integrity: that's when you change the world. You don't have to be the loudest person in the room. You don't have to have millions of followers. You just have to be willing to show up as who God made you to be. That's your calling. That's your power. Your Voice, Your Choice So here's my challenge: What would it look like for you to stop hiding? What would change if you let your Soul Voice lead instead of your survival voice? What dreams are buried under layers of fear and people-pleasing? It's time to remember who you are at the soul level. Not who the world says you should be. Not who you think you have to become.
