That means if your sermon is just words, 90% of it is gone before the week even begins. 🧠 The Science of Seeing Psychologists call it the Picture Superiority Effect —the brain processes images 60,000 times faster  than text. When we see  something, we anchor it in our long-term memory. That’s why you still remember childhood cartoons or the smell of grandma’s pie, but not last Sunday’s sermon outline. A Johns Hopkins study showed that adding visuals to spoken content increased recall sixfold . In other words: if you want your people to live it, show it—not just say it. ✝️ Jesus Wasn’t a Lecturer—He Was a Visual Preacher Think about how Jesus taught: He drew in the dirt  when the woman caught in adultery was accused. (John 8) He held up a coin  to settle the debate on taxes. (Matthew 22) He pointed to sparrows  to remind His disciples of God’s care. (Matthew 10:29) He washed feet  to redefine leadership. (John 13) Jesus could have given a dissertation on grace, stewardship, or servanthood. Instead, He gave pictures —objects people couldn’t forget. He preached with sparrows, coins, lamp/s, seeds, sheep, and bread. Ordinary objects became unforgettable sermons. Why Visual Metaphors Work Here’s what modern cognitive science shows us about metaphors: They light up more of the brain. fMRI scans show metaphors activate both the language and  sensory parts of the brain. They create emotional connection. When you say, “God is my rock,”  people don’t just process words—they imagine the strength of stone. They bridge complex ideas. Jesus didn’t teach the “soteriological ramifications of substitutionary atonement.”He said: “The Good Shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” See the difference? A Practical Example Imagine these two sermon openings: Option A (word-heavy): “Today we’ll look at three principles of God’s provision found in Matthew 6:25–34.” Option B (visual-first): (Holding a small birdcage on stage)“Inside this cage is a sparrow. Jesus said your Father feeds it every day. If He cares for the sparrow, how much more will He care for you?” Which one do you think your people will still remember three years from now? Exactly. How To Preach Like Jesus (Not PowerPoint) Here’s a simple framework you can start using this Sunday: 🔎 1. Find the Object in the Text What did Jesus use? Seeds, bread, lamps, coins. Scripture is already rich with visuals—highlight them. 🪞 2. Use Modern Metaphors Too What’s the “coin” of our day? Maybe it’s a credit card. What’s the “lamp under a basket”? Maybe it’s a flashlight with dead batteries. 🎭 3. Show, Don’t Just Tell Bring the object on stage. Let people see it, touch it, imagine it. ⏱️ 4. Keep It Simple The more ordinary the object, the more extraordinary the impact. ❤️ 5. Connect the Visual to the Heart Don’t stop at illustration—bridge it to transformation. The Pastor’s Fear: “Isn’t This Just Gimmicky?” Not if Jesus did it. Using visuals doesn’t water down the message—it makes it unforgettable. The gimmick is when we preach in a way nobody remembers. A Worship Leader’s Example A worship pastor once told me he brought a loaf of bread on stage during communion and tore it in half slowly, letting the sound echo in the microphone. He said the congregation gasped—because suddenly, they felt it.
