Hey friends! Today I want to tackle one of the biggest questions I get from youth pastors, parents, and young people themselves: Can faith really survive doubt? Here's the short answer that might surprise you: Not only can faith survive doubt, it can actually become stronger because of it. But here's the catch: it all depends on how we handle those doubts. Let me share something that might blow your mind. Recent research shows that over 70% of churchgoing high schoolers report having serious doubts about their faith. If you're a young person reading this and thinking, "Yep, that's me," you're definitely not alone. But here's what's really eye-opening, less than half of those students ever share their doubts with an adult or friend. The Silent Faith Killer You know what the research revealed as the real faith destroyer? It's not doubt itself, it's silence . When young people bottle up their questions and struggles, that's when faith starts to crumble. But when they have safe spaces to express and explore their doubts? Their faith actually grows stronger. Think about it this way: unexpressed doubt is like a splinter that gets infected. Left alone, it festers and spreads. But when you deal with it properly, clean it out, address it head-on, healing happens. Doubt Isn't the Enemy Here's something I wish more people understood: doubt doesn't equal unbelief . Doubt is uncertainty, questioning, or wrestling with faith. And guess what? Some of the most faithful people in the Bible experienced doubt. Moses doubted God could use him because he wasn't a smooth talker. Thomas famously doubted the resurrection story until he could see Jesus for himself. Even after witnessing the risen Christ, Matthew 28:17 tells us that when the disciples saw Jesus, "they worshiped him; but some doubted." Did these people stop following Jesus because of their doubts? Absolutely not! They kept walking with Him, kept asking questions, kept seeking truth. Their doubts became stepping stones to deeper faith. Why Young People Walk Away When I dig into stories of young people leaving the faith, there's almost always one common thread: unanswered or poorly answered questions . Too many young people believe that church isn't a safe place to express doubts and questions. So they suffer in silence until those doubts become too heavy to carry. Intellectual doubt ranks as one of the top reasons people abandon their faith. But here's the thing, it doesn't have to be this way. When we create environments where questions are welcomed and explored thoughtfully, doubt becomes a tool for building stronger faith, not destroying it. Creating Safe Spaces for Hard Questions If you're a parent, youth pastor, or mentor, listen up. For young people to keep asking questions, two things need to happen: They need explicit encouragement to ask questions When they do ask, their questions need to be affirmed Notice I said their questions need to be affirmed, not necessarily what they're questioning. When a teenager works up the courage to ask a vulnerable question in front of their peers, that takes guts. We need to celebrate that courage, even if the question is tough. What Young People Really Need Here's what young people will remember years from now: not whether you had all the answers, but whether you took the time to listen to their struggles and walk alongside them. They need someone who will: Take their doubts seriously Pray with them and for them Continually point them toward Jesus Share their own faith journey, including doubts they've wrestled with Parents, this is huge for you. Don't be afraid to share how you've questioned things, how you've explored uncertainties, and how your faith has evolved. Show your kids that it's normal to have doubts and that faith can emerge stronger on the other side. The Power of Good Apologetics When students receive solid apologetic instruction, learning how to defend and explain their faith, they discover that Christianity has rich intellectual foundations. This doesn't mean we have to answer every single question perfectly, but it means we take questions seriously and provide thoughtful responses. The goal isn't to eliminate all doubts or questions. The goal is to provide good answers to good questions about Christianity. When we do this well, doubt becomes a catalyst for deeper faith rather than a wrecking ball. Real Talk: Doubt Can Deepen Faith I've seen it happen countless times. A young person starts wrestling with big questions about faith. Instead of shutting down the conversation, a wise mentor walks with them through the process. They study together, pray together, and explore the tough questions honestly. What happens? That young person's faith becomes more robust, more personal, and more resilient than it ever was before. The doubts that could have destroyed their faith instead became the foundation for something much stronger. Moving Forward Together If you're a young person struggling with doubts right now, please hear this: your questions don't disqualify you from faith . In fact, they might be the very thing that leads you to a deeper, more authentic relationship with Jesus. If you're a parent or youth worker, remember that your job isn't to have all the answers. Your job is to create a safe space where young people can bring their whole selves: doubts and all: and know they'll be loved, heard, and pointed toward truth. The church needs to become a place where doubt and faith can coexist, where questions are welcomed, and where the journey toward truth is valued as much as the destination.
