Superman 2025 Christian Review: Does the Man of Steel Align with Biblical Values?

As a Christian writer who's spent years exploring faith through fiction, I couldn't help but wonder: does the new Superman movie measure up to Biblical values? After all, Superman has always been more than just a superhero: he's been a symbol of hope, sacrifice, and moral clarity that resonates deeply with Christian audiences. The 2025 Superman film, directed by James Gunn, presents us with an interesting paradox. While it showcases many virtues that align perfectly with Christian ethics, it deliberately distances itself from explicit Biblical symbolism. Let's dive into what this means for Christian families considering this film. The Christian Virtues That Shine Through One of the most striking aspects of this Superman portrayal is his unwavering commitment to self-sacrifice and service. Throughout the film, we see Clark Kent consistently choosing others' needs above his own comfort and safety. This mirrors the Biblical call to "do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves" (Philippians 2:3). The movie excels in showing Superman's mercy and compassion. Rather than seeking vengeance against those who wrong him, he consistently chooses forgiveness and restoration. This echoes Jesus's teaching about turning the other cheek and loving our enemies (Matthew 5:39-44). In a world filled with cynical superheroes who operate in moral gray areas, Superman's commitment to goodness feels refreshingly authentic. What particularly impressed me was how the film portrays Superman's choice to embrace his humanity over his alien heritage. This decision reflects the Christian understanding that we're called to live in this world, caring for creation and our neighbors, rather than being so heavenly-minded that we're of no earthly good. Where Biblical Foundations Are Missing However, here's where things get complicated for Christian viewers. Director James Gunn has deliberately avoided the Superman-as-Christ parallels that previous films emphasized. While earlier Superman movies leaned heavily into the messianic imagery: the son sent from above to save humanity: this version presents Superman as more of a good moral teacher. The film grounds Superman's virtues in secular humanism rather than any transcendent source. His goodness comes from his own moral agency and choice, not from a divine calling or higher purpose rooted in God's character. While Christians can certainly appreciate ethical behavior regardless of its source, this approach misses the deeper theological richness that could make Superman's story truly transformative. The traditional motto shifts from "Truth, Justice, and the American Way" to "the human way," emphasizing universal human values over any specific cultural or transcendent framework. While this makes the character more globally appealing, it also removes him from any particular moral foundation that Christians might find more meaningful. A Missed Messianic Moment One scene that particularly stood out to me as a missed opportunity occurs when Superman escapes from captivity. Instead of freeing the other imprisoned metahumans alongside him, he leaves them behind. This moment starkly contrasts with Jesus's declaration in Luke 4:18: "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners." A truly messianic Superman would have ensured that his liberation extended to all the captives, not just himself. This scene reveals the film's commitment to portraying Superman as someone who does good, but not necessarily as someone who embodies the complete self-sacrificial love that Christians see in Christ. What Christian Families Should Know Despite these theological limitations, there's much for Christian families to appreciate in this film. The emphasis on choosing goodness over power, service over self-interest, and hope over despair aligns beautifully with Biblical values. These themes can spark meaningful conversations with children about what it means to live virtuously. The movie's focus on Superman "wanting to be a good man" rather than simply being inherently good also opens doors for discussions about moral growth and character development. Unlike some superhero films that present their heroes as flawless from the start, this Superman grows into his goodness through conscious choices: something our children can emulate. Parents should be prepared to discuss why Superman's goodness, while admirable, differs from the goodness that flows from a relationship with God. This can be an excellent opportunity to explore how Christian virtue isn't just about moral behavior, but about transformation through the Holy Spirit. The Bigger Picture for Christian Viewers From my perspective as someone who writes faith-based fiction, I see this Superman as occupying an interesting middle ground. He's not explicitly Christian, but he's not anti-Christian either. The film presents what we might call "pre-evangelistic" content: it prepares hearts for deeper spiritual truths without delivering them directly. This approach has both strengths and weaknesses. On the positive side, it means the film can reach broader audiences with genuinely good moral messages. Christians can watch alongside non-believing friends and find common ground in appreciating virtue, sacrifice, and hope. On the challenging side, it means the film stops short of the transformative power that comes from grounding these virtues in their ultimate source: God's character and love for humanity. Should Christian Families Watch It? After careful consideration, I believe this Superman film can be a valuable addition to Christian family movie nights, with proper context. The virtues it celebrates are genuinely Biblical, even if their foundation isn't explicitly theological. The film's commitment to showing goodness without cynicism is refreshing in today's entertainment landscape. However, I'd encourage parents to use this as a starting point for deeper conversations rather than an ending point. Ask your children: "What makes Superman want to be good? Where do our own desires to do good come from? How does Superman's goodness compare to the goodness we see in Jesus?" The film works well as a bridge between secular culture and Christian values, demonstrating that many people: regardless of their faith background: recognize and admire the same virtues that Christianity champions. Final Thoughts This Superman doesn't replace the need for explicitly Christian storytelling, but it does provide common ground for meaningful conversations about virtue, sacrifice, and hope. While it grounds these values in humanism rather than divine revelation, it still points viewers toward goodness in a way that Christians can appreciate and build upon. For families seeking entertainment that won't contradict their values while opening doors for spiritual discussions, this Superman delivers. Just remember that the real "Man of Steel" we follow is the one who not only taught us to love our enemies but showed us how by dying for them: and that's a story worth telling alongside any superhero tale. The film reminds us that while good moral teachers can inspire us toward virtue, only Christ can transform our hearts to make that virtue sustainable and truly redemptive.
