Written by: Layne McDonald, Ph.D."Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom." – Psalm 90:12 In the race to achieve milestones, it’s easy to overlook the quiet beauty of everyday moments. Yet, the memories that shape our children most aren’t tied to trophies or certificates—they’re born in the laughter, love, and togetherness of time spent as a family. The Power of Presence Studies reveal that children who spend meaningful time with their parents are 22% less likely to engage in risky behaviors. It’s a reminder that what kids crave most isn’t perfection—it’s connection. Every shared story, every heartfelt prayer, every simple moment together becomes a thread in the fabric of a lasting bond.
Practical Ways to Create Meaningful Moments
Start “Family Friday Nights” - Dedicate one night a week to togetherness—whether it’s playing board games, watching movies, or cooking dinner as a team. Consistency builds anticipation and memories.
Create Family Traditions - Begin small, meaningful rituals like prayer walks, bedtime stories, or Sunday morning pancake breakfasts. Traditions give your family a rhythm of love and belonging.
Schedule One-on-One Time - Plan monthly dates with each child to focus on their unique personality and interests. These moments show them they are deeply valued and loved. Why Moments Matter More Milestones will come and go, but the legacy of time well spent remains. When we prioritize moments over achievements, we teach our children what truly matters—faith, family, and the gift of being present. In these sacred moments, we discover the wisdom of Psalm 90:12: to treasure each day as a blessing. Because it’s not about how many days you spend together, but how you spend the days you’re given.
