Dr. Mac Christian Movie Reviews: Moana (2016)

“An ocean adventure with catchy songs, gorgeous animation, and some spiritual storm clouds parents need to navigate.”

🌊 Quick Snapshot (Spoiler-Free)

Moana, the daughter of a Polynesian chief, feels called by the ocean to restore a stolen heart stone to the goddess Te Fiti. Along the way, she teams up with the demigod Maui, faces lava monsters, coconut pirates (yes, really), and discovers her true identity as a leader.

It’s Disney magic at its finest… but it also leans heavily into Polynesian mythology and goddess worship. Let’s unpack it.

🗣️ Language & Profanity

  • No curse words.

  • Insults: “Idiot,” “dumb,” “moron,” and “stupid” get tossed around, mostly by Maui.

  • Name-calling humor: “Boat snack” and “princess” (mocking).

💡 Why it matters: While not severe, these insults normalize unkind speech — especially dangerous when sung with charisma by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

😬 Inappropriate or Questionable Content: Movie Reviews: Moana (2016)

  • Spiritual / Religious Themes:

    • Central story revolves around goddess worship (Te Fiti, Te Kā, Maui the demigod).

    • The ocean is depicted as a sentient being guiding Moana — essentially divine.

    • Villain redemption arc centers on restoring a goddess’s stolen “heart.”

  • Magic & Supernatural:

    • Maui shapeshifts using a magical fishhook.

    • Moana interacts with the dead (her grandmother’s spirit appears as a manta ray).

  • Suggestive Humor:

    • Maui makes a few jokes about nudity and flexes his tattoos.

    • Some “bathroom humor” moments for laughs.

  • Scary Elements:

    • Lava monster Te Kā, giant crab Tamatoa, and other battle sequences may scare younger kids.

💡 Why it matters: Unlike Frozen’s “magical powers,” Moana explicitly portrays deities, reincarnation, and divine powers — which Christian families must carefully frame biblically.

✝️ The Christian Parent Grading Scale

Category

Grade

Explanation

Biblical Truth & Redemption

D

Story celebrates pagan gods and goddess mythology. Self-discovery is the “salvation,” not Christ.

Suitability for Kids (6–12)

C

Adventure-filled but heavy on scary scenes and goddess worship.

Language & Cleanliness

B+

No profanity, but mocking and insults abound.

Family & Emotional Engagement

A

Inspiring songs, vibrant visuals, themes of courage and leadership are strong.

Overall Christian Values

C−

Great lessons on bravery, but mythology and goddess worship require heavy filtering and discussion.

🛠️ The Filter Fix (VidAngel / Enjoy Movies Your Way)

  • Cut or mute insults from Maui.

  • Filter goddess references (Te Fiti, Te Kā) to tone down pagan undertones.

  • Optional: remove “Shiny” (Tamatoa’s song) if you want to skip the bizarre glam-crab scene.

  • Tone down death/spirit scenes with Moana’s grandmother.

💡 Filters allow families to enjoy Moana’s bravery and leadership themes while removing the problematic theology.

🧑‍⚕️ Dr. Mac’s Verdict

🚦 Yellow/Red Light Combo — Beautifully made, culturally rich, and catchy, but heavily infused with goddess worship. Families should proceed with extreme caution.

Best Age Range: 8+ with heavy parental framing and filtering.

Family Discussion Starters:

  1. “Moana finds her identity in herself. Where should Christians truly find their identity?” (2 Cor. 5:17)

  2. “The people worship Te Fiti as a goddess. What does the Bible say about worshipping created things instead of the Creator?” (Romans 1:25)

  3. “Moana is brave in leading her people. How can we be brave leaders who rely on God, not ourselves?”

🎤 Final Word from Dr. Mac

Moana is visually stunning and musically inspiring — but spiritually confusing. It teaches courage and leadership but mixes those truths with goddess worship. With VidAngel or Enjoy Movies Your Way, parents can strip out the problematic layers and focus on the bravery, perseverance, and leadership lessons.
