[Leadership]: Are You Making These Common Church Culture Mistakes? 10 Signs Your Community Is Struggling (And How to Fix It)

Updated: Feb 24

Category: Leadership

Church culture doesn't break overnight. It erodes slowly: through small decisions, repeated patterns, and blind spots we never meant to develop. If your community feels stagnant, disconnected, or resistant to growth, the problem might not be your people. It might be your leadership approach.

Here are ten common church culture mistakes that quietly undermine healthy communities: and practical steps to fix them before they become crises.

1. Filling Positions with "Warm Bodies" Instead of Gifted Leaders

The mistake: When a ministry slot opens up, we grab whoever's available and willing. We treat leadership like a volunteer shift instead of a calling that requires specific gifts.

The fix: Start asking better questions. Instead of "Who's free?", ask "Who has demonstrated the ability to mobilize others?" Look for people with a track record: not just faithfulness, but effectiveness. Conduct proper discernment processes before placing anyone in leadership. A warm body in the wrong role creates more problems than an empty position.

2. Communicating the "What" Without Explaining the "Why"

The mistake: We announce changes, launch new initiatives, and roll out programs without helping people understand the reasoning behind them. Then we're surprised when the congregation feels unmotivated or resistant.

The fix: Lead with context. Before you share what you're doing, explain why it matters. Connect every decision to your mission and values. When people understand the heart behind a change, they're far more likely to support it: even if it's uncomfortable.
