Looking for Clarity on Global Events? Here Are 5 Things You Should Know Before Your First Cup of Coffee

Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 26, 2026. As you settle into your morning routine, the world continues to move at a breakneck pace. From courtroom battles over economic policy to the deployment of aircraft carriers in the Middle East, the headlines can often feel overwhelming.

At The McReport, we believe that staying informed shouldn’t mean losing your peace. Our goal is to provide you with the facts you need, viewed through a lens of faith, helping you respond with a heart of prayer and a mind of clarity. Here are five major global shifts you should know about before you finish that first cup of coffee.

1. The Tariff Tug-of-War: SCOTUS and the Executive Branch

The Facts In a significant 6-3 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down President Trump’s original global tariff order, ruling that the administration lacked the specific emergency powers required to implement such a broad economic measure without further congressional authorization. In immediate response, the President signed a new executive order imposing a 10% global tariff and has publicly threatened to increase that figure to 15% if international trade concessions are not met. This moves the battle from the judiciary back into the realm of executive policy and international negotiation.

The Lens As followers of Christ, we understand that "The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it" (Psalm 24:1). In the Assemblies of God tradition, we value the principle of stewardship: not just of our personal finances, but of the national and global resources God has entrusted to us. While the state has the right to establish borders and economic policy (Romans 13), we must always look at how these policies affect the "least of these." Economic shifts often impact the cost of living for families and the stability of the global missions we support.

The Response We can respond by praying for wisdom for our leaders and the judicial system. Regardless of our political leanings, we ask for economic policies that promote flourishing and stability. Let’s pray that our leaders navigate these complex issues with integrity and a focus on the common good.

2. The EU Hits the Pause Button on Trade

The Facts The European Union has officially postponed a high-stakes vote on a sweeping trade deal with the United States. This delay comes directly in the wake of the new 10% blanket tariffs announced by the U.S. executive branch. EU trade ministers are now scheduled to meet with G7 counterparts to assess the potential impact of these tariffs on the global market. The uncertainty has created a cooling effect on international markets as leaders wait to see if the U.S. will follow through on the 15% escalation threat.

The Lens Scripture reminds us that "a house divided against itself will not stand" (Matthew 12:25). While this verse refers to spiritual and domestic unity, it also speaks to the necessity of cooperation in human affairs. In a world that is increasingly interconnected, the spirit of cooperation is often tested by national interests. As believers, we look toward the ultimate unity found in the Gospel, recognizing that while nations may disagree, our primary citizenship is in a Kingdom that is not of this world.

The Response Pray for the diplomats and trade ministers currently in negotiations. Ask that God would grant them a spirit of cooperation rather than one of contention. In our own lives, we can respond by being mindful of how global uncertainty affects our neighbors and by remaining steadfast in our trust that God is our ultimate provider.

3. Rising Tensions in the Middle East: Carriers on the Move

The Facts Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have reached a fever pitch this week. Ahead of planned talks in Geneva, Iranian officials have accused President Trump of spreading "big lies" regarding the nature of their regional activities. Concurrently, the U.S. military has increased its presence near Iranian waters, deploying both the USS Gerald Ford and the USS Abraham Lincoln. This naval buildup is intended as a deterrent, but it has heightened fears of an accidental or intentional escalation in the region.

The Lens We are reminded of Jesus’ words in Matthew 24:6: "You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed." As part of the Assemblies of God, we have a deep commitment to the Great Commission and the spread of the Gospel in the 10/40 window, which includes Iran. We believe in the power of the Holy Spirit to bring peace where human diplomacy fails. We also hold to the hope of the Second Coming, recognizing that true, lasting peace will only come when the Prince of Peace returns.

The Response Intercede for the men and women serving on the USS Gerald Ford and the USS Abraham Lincoln. Pray for their safety and for the families waiting for them back home. Pray specifically for the people of Iran: that in the midst of political turmoil, many would find the hope of Salvation. Ask for a de-escalation of rhetoric and a path toward peace.

4. Navigating the Storm: Cartel Violence in Mexico

The Facts Travelers, including a significant number of Canadians, are currently navigating a complex security landscape in Mexico as cartel-related violence continues in several regions. While some reports suggest a "slow return to normalcy" in certain affected areas, the situation remains fluid and unpredictable. The violence has impacted local communities and the tourism industry, leading to heightened travel advisories and a general sense of unease for those with ties to the region.

The Lens Our hearts go out to those living under the shadow of violence. The Bible tells us that God is "a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble" (Psalm 9:9). Divine healing is not just for the body, but for communities and nations. We recognize the brokenness caused by crime and the drug trade, and we stand in solidarity with the innocent people caught in the crossfire.

The Response Pray for the safety of travelers and the protection of local residents in Mexico. Pray for the local churches in these areas: that they would be beacons of hope and safety for their communities. Let’s also pray for the transformation of those involved in the cartels, that they would experience a life-changing encounter with the Gospel.

5. Friction in the Ukraine Peace Process

The Facts The diplomatic effort to end the conflict in Ukraine is facing new hurdles. Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that Ukrainian and Western intelligence agencies are actively attempting to "sabotage" the peace process. These accusations come at a critical time when international mediators are attempting to find common ground. The rhetoric underscores the deep-seated mistrust that continues to hamper any meaningful move toward a permanent ceasefire.

The Lens James 3:18 tells us that "Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness." In the current global climate, being a peacemaker is a difficult and often thankless task. We must be discerning about the information we consume, recognizing that in war, truth is often the first casualty. We pray for a resolution that honors justice and preserves life, remembering that every person involved is made in the image of God.

The Response Ask God to intervene in the hearts of those at the negotiating table. Pray that the "sabotage" (whether real or rhetorical) would be replaced by a sincere desire to save lives. Pray for the persecuted and displaced Christians in both Ukraine and Russia, that they would be strengthened by the Holy Spirit during this prolonged season of trial.
