Looking For the Truth? Here Are 10 Things You Should Know About This Morning’s News

Hey there. I’m Layne McDonald. If you’ve turned on the TV or scrolled through your feed this morning, you probably feel that familiar buzz of noise. It’s a lot to take in, and frankly, it’s hard to know what’s actually happening behind the headlines. At The McReport, we believe you deserve the truth, served with a side of peace rather than a side of panic.

We’re looking at ten major stories breaking today, February 26, 2026. My goal is to help you process these through a lens of faith and logic so you can go about your day with a clear head and a steady heart.

1. A Bipartisan Move on Housing

The Facts: Republican Senator Josh Hawley and Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley have introduced a joint bill aimed at the housing crisis. The legislation proposes a ban on large investment firms purchasing single-family homes. The goal is to limit the ability of "Wall Street landlords" to buy up inventory, which proponents argue has driven home prices out of reach for average families.

The Lens: In the Assemblies of God tradition, we often talk about stewardship and the importance of the family unit. A home isn't just an asset; it's the "tabernacle" where a family grows. When the ability to own a home becomes a tool for corporate profit at the expense of the community, it challenges the biblical principle of looking out for the "least of these" and ensuring neighbors can flourish.

The Response: Pray for wisdom for our legislators. Regardless of your political leanings, we can all agree that stable housing helps families thrive. Ask God how you can support those in your own community who are struggling with the rising cost of living.

2. Deadly Confrontation in Cuban Waters

The Facts: The Cuban Interior Ministry reported that four residents of the United States were killed by the Cuban military. The incident occurred when a speedboat entered Cuban territorial waters. Cuban officials described it as a "foiled armed infiltration," claiming the boat carried ten individuals armed with assault rifles, handguns, and improvised explosive devices.

The Lens: This is a sobering reminder of the volatility of our world. As Christians, we hold to the sanctity of life. Any loss of life is a tragedy. In these moments, we are reminded that our true citizenship is in Heaven, even as we navigate the complex and often violent realities of earthly borders.

The Response: We should pray for the families of those who were killed. Pray also for the diplomatic teams involved, that this incident does not spiral into a wider conflict. We seek a world where "nation shall not lift up sword against nation."

3. Rising U.S.-Cuba Tensions

The Facts: Following the speedboat incident, diplomatic tensions between Washington and Havana are escalating. The U.S. State Department is investigating the claims made by the Cuban government while concerns grow regarding maritime security and international relations in the Caribbean.

The Lens: The Bible tells us that "blessed are the peacemakers." In a world that often leans toward escalation and "eye for an eye" rhetoric, the Christian response is to call for de-escalation and truth. We look for the Holy Spirit to bring a spirit of counsel to our leaders.

The Response: Take a moment to pray for the safety of those living in coastal regions and for the men and women in the Coast Guard and military who are on the front lines of these tensions.

4. Medicaid Funding Halted in Minnesota

The Facts: Vice President JD Vance and CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz announced that the administration is halting specific Medicaid funds to Minnesota. The move is part of a broader federal crackdown on what the administration identifies as fraud within the state’s program.

The Lens: Accountability is a scriptural mandate. When resources meant for the sick and the poor are mishandled or stolen through fraud, it is a violation of justice. However, we must also ensure that the "widows and orphans": those truly in need: do not suffer because of the actions of the dishonest.

The Response: Pray that the investigation is swift and that those who genuinely rely on these funds for medical care are protected during this administrative halt.

5. Round Three of Iran Nuclear Talks

The Facts: U.S. officials have entered the third round of nuclear negotiations with Iran. Diplomats have characterized the talks as an effort toward "honorable diplomacy," seeking an agreement that addresses nuclear proliferation while managing regional stability.

The Lens: As we look toward the Second Coming of Christ, we know that rumors of wars are part of our journey. Yet, our mandate is to seek peace in the city where we dwell. The Middle East remains a focal point of biblical history and future prophecy, and we approach these headlines with both awareness and a commitment to prayer for the peace of Jerusalem and the surrounding nations.

The Response: Ask the Holy Spirit to guide the negotiators. We want outcomes that prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction and protect human life across the globe.

6. The Clinton Deposition

The Facts: Bill and Hillary Clinton are scheduled to begin depositions today in connection with the ongoing Congressional investigation into the Jeffrey Epstein case. This follows a series of subpoenas aimed at uncovering the extent of high-level connections to the late financier.

The Lens: Luke 8:17 tells us, "For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light." Truth is not a partisan issue; it is a spiritual one. When we seek the truth, we aren't looking for "gotcha" moments, but for the restoration of integrity in our leadership.

The Response: Let’s avoid the temptation to use news like this as a weapon of contempt. Instead, pray that the legal process is fair, thorough, and that the truth: whatever it may be: is revealed for the sake of justice for the victims.

7. Wisconsin’s Governor Race is Wide Open

The Facts: A new Marquette University poll shows that 65% of Democratic primary voters in Wisconsin remain undecided. Furthermore, 58% of all voters surveyed say they have heard only "a little" about the candidates vying for the governorship.

The Lens: Participation in our "earthly city" is part of our witness. When the majority of the public is disengaged, it leaves a vacuum. We are called to be "salt and light," which includes being informed and active citizens who vote with a conscience shaped by the Word of God.

The Response: If you live in Wisconsin, take some time this week to research the candidates. If you don't, use this as a reminder to look into your own local elections. Our local leaders often have a more direct impact on our daily lives than those in D.C.

8. The Debate Over a "Living Wage"

The Facts: Lawmakers in Wisconsin, including Representative Amaad Rivera-Wagner, are pushing for a minimum wage increase. The current state minimum is $7.25 per hour. The debate centers on defining a "living wage" that can realistically cover monthly bills in the current economy.

The Lens: The dignity of work is a central theme in our faith. We believe that a "worker is worthy of his wages." Balancing the needs of small business owners with the needs of workers to provide for their families requires a level of wisdom and compassion that goes beyond simple economics.

The Response: Support local businesses in your area and, if you are an employer, pray about how you can best honor and provide for those who work for you. You can find more resources on community engagement at layemcdonald.com.

9. Surgeon General Nominee and the Vaccine Debate

The Facts: President Trump’s nominee for Surgeon General is facing intense questioning from Congress regarding her stance on vaccines. This comes at a time when the U.S. is seeing a surge in measles cases across several states.

The Lens: In the Assemblies of God, we believe in Divine Healing: that God is our Healer. We also believe that God gives wisdom to men and women in the medical field. Navigating public health requires a balance of respecting individual conscience and the responsibility to protect the vulnerable from disease.

The Response: Pray for the nominee and for the health of our nation’s children. We ask for God’s protection over our communities and for clarity for parents making health decisions for their families.

10. Calls for Resignation in Texas

The Facts: A Texas congressman is facing renewed calls to resign following allegations of an extramarital affair with a staff member. Several members of his own party have suggested his position is no longer tenable due to the breach of conduct and trust.

The Lens: Leadership requires character. When those in power stumble, it affects the trust of the entire community. While we believe in the power of forgiveness and the possibility of restoration through repentance, we also acknowledge that public service requires a high standard of accountability.

The Response: Pray for the congressman, his family, and the staff member involved. Sin always leaves a wake of hurt. Pray for a spirit of repentance and for the leaders of Texas to act with integrity and courage.

Navigating the news doesn't have to leave you feeling drained. When we look at these stories, we see a world in need of the grace and the steadying hand of the Creator. Whether it's the price of a home or the tensions in the Caribbean, God is not surprised by the headlines.
