Superman 2025 Christian Review: Can Modern Heroes Reflect Eternal Truths?

Movie Reviews

Modern heroes can absolutely reflect eternal truths, but they often do so as a "rumor of glory" rather than a direct map to the Gospel. In the case of the 2025 Superman, we see a hero who embodies the fruits of the Spirit, kindness, gentleness, and self-sacrifice, while the narrative itself attempts to ground these virtues in human agency rather than divine design. For the Christian family, this film serves as a beautiful yet incomplete picture of the goodness we are called to, offering a unique opportunity to discuss why we choose the "Human Way" and how it points back to the "Heavenly Way."

The Return of the Optimistic Hero

For years, superhero cinema has leaned into the "gritty reboot," where heroes are burdened by their powers and cynical about the world they protect. The 2025 Superman, directed by James Gunn, marks a significant departure from this trend. This film brings back a Superman who isn't just powerful, but genuinely nice. He is a hero who smiles, who helps, and who believes in the inherent value of every person he meets.

From a leadership perspective, this shift is refreshing. In our professional and personal lives, we often confuse "leadership" with "dominance." This film reminds us that true leadership is rooted in service. Whether it is Superman pausing mid-battle to ensure the safety of a stray animal or taking the time to reassure a frightened citizen, the movie emphasizes that kindness is not a weakness, it is a choice that requires immense strength.

Truth, Justice, and the Human Way

One of the most discussed changes in this iteration is the update to Superman’s tagline. Moving away from "The American Way," the film focuses on "Truth, Justice, and the Human Way." For many, this feels like a pivot toward secular humanism. The film suggests that Superman’s goodness comes from his upbringing on the Kent farm and his own choice to be "human" despite his alien origins.

As believers, we know that there is no "Human Way" that leads to ultimate truth without the presence of the Creator. However, we can also see the Imago Dei (the Image of God) at work here. Even when a story attempts to be purely moral rather than spiritual, it cannot help but reflect the character of God because God is the author of morality. When Superman chooses kindness, he is reflecting the heart of Jesus, whether the screenplay acknowledges the source or not. This creates a "fertile ground" for us to talk with our children about where our sense of "right and wrong" actually comes from.

The Theological Gap: A Hero Without a Savior

While previous versions of Superman, most notably those directed by Zack Snyder, heavily utilized "Christ-figure" imagery (think Superman descending from the sky in a cross pose), the 2025 film intentionally avoids these metaphors. It positions Superman as a man among men, a neighbor with extraordinary abilities. It celebrates the "goodness of humanity."

This creates what we call a theological gap. The film asks us to be good because it is "the human way," but it doesn't provide a solid foundation for why humanity is worth saving or how we can be good when our own nature fails us. It presents "secular humanism wrapped in a red cape." For parents, this is a vital teaching moment: we can admire Superman’s kindness while reminding our families that our ability to love and serve comes from a God who first loved us. We don't just act "human"; we strive to be transformed by the Holy Spirit.

Leadership and Self-Sacrifice

In our work at Layne McDonald, we focus on faith-integrated leadership. Superman 2025 provides a masterclass in lead-by-example character. The film showcases a leader who doesn't use his "platform" (his powers) for self-aggrandizement, but for the elevation of others. This is a core Christian value: "The greatest among you will be your servant" (Matthew 23:11).

The Kent family’s influence on Clark is a powerful reminder of the impact of godly mentorship and parenting. Jonathan and Martha Kent didn't just teach Clark how to hide; they taught him how to care. In a world that often prioritizes "getting ahead," the film’s focus on the quiet virtues of a rural upbringing reminds us that our primary leadership training happens in the home and the small, everyday moments of faithfulness.

Christian Safety Rating & Content Review

As you plan your family movie night, here is a breakdown of what to expect from Superman 2025. This film is generally much more "family-friendly" than the R-rated or "hard PG-13" superhero films of late, but it still contains standard action elements.

Overall Safety Rating: 4/5 Stars

  • Language: 4-5 instances of minor profanity (e.g., "h-ll," "d-mn"). No major slurs or pervasive foul language.

  • Violence/Gore: Frequent superhero action including explosions, flying debris, and super-powered combat. However, the film avoids graphic gore or "blood-lust." The focus is on saving lives rather than taking them.

  • Sexual Content: Very minimal. Clark and Lois share a romantic chemistry that is depicted with respect. No nudity or explicit scenes.

  • Parental Concerns: Some thematic elements regarding loneliness and being an outsider may be sensitive for younger children, but they are handled with hope and optimism.

If you prefer to filter even the minor language or more intense action sequences, we highly recommend using services like VidAngel or Enjoy Movies Your Way to customize the viewing experience for your younger children.

Takeaway / Next Step

The next time you watch a hero on screen, don't just watch for the action. Look for the "echoes." Use Superman 2025 as a bridge to discuss how our desire for a "savior" and our love for "justice" are actually longings for the Kingdom of God. Ask your children: "Why does Superman choose to be kind even when he doesn't have to?" Then, lead them to the truth that all goodness starts with God.
