Thank You for Opening Hearts Yesterday

Good morning, team.

I'm sitting here with my coffee, and I wanted to reach out before your Monday gets too crazy. Yesterday was powerful, and you need to know what happened because of you.

When you showed up early, unlocked those doors, adjusted your name tag, and took your position, you became something sacred. You became the first face. The first smile. The first "you matter" that someone experienced yesterday.

You Were Someone's Safe Place

Here's what I need you to understand: for at least one person who walked through our doors yesterday, you were their first safe human interaction in days. Maybe weeks.

Think about that for a second.

While you were simply doing what you do, greeting, directing, holding doors, remembering names, someone's anxiety was melting. Someone's guard was coming down. Someone who had been isolated, hurt, or invisible finally felt seen.

You didn't need a theology degree to do that. You didn't need a perfect script or a dramatic testimony. You just needed to be present, kind, and genuine. And you were all three.

The Stories You'll Never Hear

I want to tell you about a few moments from yesterday that you probably didn't notice:

There was a young woman who sat in her car for fifteen minutes before coming in. She told me later that she almost left twice. But then she saw you standing at the door with that smile, and something shifted. She said, "They look like they actually want me here."

She came in. She stayed. She encountered Jesus through worship, through teaching, and yes, through you.

There was a father who brought his kids for the first time since his divorce. He was terrified he'd be judged. He told me he'd rehearsed explanations in his head about why his ex wasn't there. But when you greeted him, you didn't ask invasive questions. You didn't pry. You just welcomed his family with warmth and pointed them in the right direction.

He exhaled. He felt safe. And his kids noticed.

There was an older gentleman who comes every week but doesn't talk much. Yesterday, you remembered his name. You asked how his week was. He opened up about his late wife's birthday being last Tuesday and how hard it had been. You listened. You didn't try to fix it. You just listened.

That's ministry, friend. That's Jesus.

The Power of Showing Up

You know what's wild? Some of you serve on this team even when it's inconvenient. Even when you're tired. Even when you'd rather sleep in or handle a dozen other things.

But you show up anyway.

That consistency matters more than you know. When people see the same kind faces week after week, they start to believe that this community is real. That it's not performative. That we genuinely care.

Your presence says, "You're not a project. You're not a number. You're a person we're honored to welcome."

That's countercultural in a world where so many interactions feel transactional or surface-level.

You Set the Tone for Everything That Follows

Here's something I want you to remember: the atmosphere you create at the door ripples through the entire service.

When someone walks in feeling welcomed and valued, they're more open during worship. They're more receptive during the message. They're more likely to connect with others afterward.

But when someone walks in feeling overlooked or uncomfortable, they spend the whole service with their guard up, just trying to make it through.

You determine which experience people have. That's not pressure, that's power. That's influence. That's leadership.

And you're doing it beautifully.

Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing

I know we've talked about systems and processes and who stands where and when to use the radio. All that stuff matters.

But let's never forget why we do this: Jesus. And loving others the way Jesus would.

Jesus didn't just tolerate people. He saw them. He welcomed the outsiders, the messy, the broken, the questioning. He created space where people could encounter the Father without shame.

That's what we're doing at those doors.

You're not just a greeter. You're an ambassador of a kingdom where everyone is invited, everyone is valued, and everyone matters.

So when someone walks through those doors, whether they're dressed up or barely holding it together, whether they've been following Jesus for decades or just started asking questions, your job is simple: love them well.

Some Practical Reminders

As we move forward, here are a few things to keep in mind:

• Eye contact matters. Put your phone away. Look at people. Let them know they have your full attention for those few seconds.

• Names are powerful. If someone shares their name, use it. Write it down if you need to. People feel seen when you remember.

• Don't make assumptions. You never know what someone is carrying. A simple "Welcome! So glad you're here" goes a long way.

• It's okay to not have all the answers. If someone asks you something you don't know, it's perfectly fine to say, "Great question! Let me connect you with someone who can help."

• Your smile is ministry. Seriously. Don't underestimate the power of genuine warmth.

You're Building Something Bigger

Every Sunday, you're not just greeting people: you're building a culture. A culture where everyone belongs. Where grace is the default. Where people can come as they are and find a community that will walk with them toward who God's calling them to be.

That doesn't happen by accident. It happens because people like you choose to serve with excellence, humility, and love.

I don't say this enough, but thank you. Thank you for waking up early. Thank you for sacrificing your own comfort. Thank you for learning names and remembering stories and creating space for people who desperately need it.

You're making a bigger impact than you realize. And I'm honored to serve alongside you.

Let's keep doing this. Let's keep pointing people to Jesus by loving them the way He does: with open arms, genuine smiles, and hearts that say, "You belong here."
