“It’s like someone said: ‘What if Sesame Street was terrifying and vaguely occult?’ And Jim Henson said: ‘Perfect.’”
📖 Quick Snapshot
On a dying alien world, two races — the cruel Skeksis (vulture-like villains) and the peaceful Mystics — are locked in a struggle connected to a broken magical crystal. A young Gelfling named Jen must fulfill a prophecy by healing the crystal and restoring balance.
It’s visually stunning (all puppetry), but incredibly dark in tone and heavy in mystical imagery.
🗣️ Language & Profanity
Almost no profanity at all.
Dialogue is clean — but the imagery is the problem.
😬 Inappropriate or Questionable Content
Occult & mysticism: The entire story revolves around prophecy, magical crystals, and New Age “balance of the universe” theology.
Nightmare fuel: The Skeksis are grotesque, corpse-like puppets. Younger kids will have nightmares for days.
Soul-sucking scenes: The Skeksis literally drain the essence of creatures — very disturbing, especially for kids.
Hopeless atmosphere: The whole world feels grim, heavy, and spiritually oppressive.
✝️ The Christian Parent Grading Scale
Category | Grade | Explanation |
Biblical Truth & Redemption | F | Prophecy and “balance” point toward false spirituality rather than God’s truth. |
Suitability for Kids (6–12) | D | Far too dark and creepy. Definitely not for young children. |
Language & Cleanliness | A | No cursing or crude jokes. |
Family & Emotional Engagement | C- | It’s imaginative, but the tone is too heavy and frightening for family viewing. |
Overall Christian Values | D | Teaches vague morality and “oneness,” but totally divorced from biblical truth. |
🛠️ The Filter Fix
VidAngel / Enjoy Movies Your Way can’t do much here. The issues aren’t language or sex — it’s the entire spiritual framework of the story.
Filtering can trim scary or disturbing visuals, but parents should know: the occult worldview is baked into the core.
🧑⚕️ Dr. Mac’s Verdict
🚦 Red Light — This is one to skip for Christian families, unless you’re analyzing fantasy storytelling as adults. It’s artistic, yes, but spiritually murky and emotionally oppressive.
Best Age Range: 15+ (if at all)
Family Discussion Starter: “The world says salvation is about ‘balance’ or ‘finding power within.’ What does the Bible say about true salvation and restoration?” (John 14:6).
