For those serving on the greeter and door team, this reality isn't meant to add pressure. It's meant to highlight just how powerful your role truly is. You're not simply opening doors or handing out bulletins. You're setting the tone for someone's entire experience with your christian community.

  • Match the duration – Aim for 3-5 seconds of eye contact when greeting. Too short feels dismissive; too long feels intense.

  • Smile with your eyes – A genuine smile reaches the eyes. Practice in the mirror if needed.

  • Break naturally – It's okay to break eye contact occasionally. Just return to it as you speak.

One common mistake well-meaning greeters make is overwhelming first-time guests with questions. "Is this your first time? Where are you from? How did you hear about us? Do you have kids? What service do you usually attend?"

Even though these questions come from a good place, they can feel like an interrogation, especially to someone who's already nervous.

A better approach is brief, friendly conversation without the rapid-fire questions. Here's an example:

Instead of: "Hi! Is this your first time here? Where are you from? Let me show you everything!"

Try: "Good morning! So glad you're here today. If you need anything at all, I'm right here to help."

  • Acknowledges their presence warmly

  • Offers help without demanding information

  • Gives them space to engage at their own comfort level

You can absolutely follow up with questions if the guest opens up. But let them lead. Your job is to create a comfortable atmosphere, not extract data.
