The Sacred Ordinary: Finding God in the Midst of Serving

It usually happens when the house is quiet, or maybe right in the middle of the loudest part of your day. You’re standing over a sink full of dishes, or you’re stuck in traffic on the way to a volunteer shift, and you feel that familiar tug in your spirit. You want to feel close to God. You want that "mountaintop" experience you had at the last retreat or that surge of peace you felt during a powerful Sunday worship set. But instead, you have a to-do list that’s three pages long and a pile of laundry that seems to be reproducing when you aren’t looking.
We often fall into the trap of thinking that God only shows up in the "big" moments: the miracles, the loud prayers, and the cathedral ceilings. We treat the ordinary parts of our lives like the waiting room for the spiritual parts. But what if the mundane isn't an interruption to your spiritual life? What if the mundane is your spiritual life?
At Layne McDonald Ministries, we talk a lot about "You Upgraded." Usually, people think that means a better job or a bigger platform. But the ultimate upgrade is learning how to see the Holy Spirit in the grocery store aisle and the boardroom. It’s about discovering the sacred ordinary.
The Myth of the Divided Life
One of the biggest hurdles we face in our walk with Christ is the idea that our lives are divided into "sacred" and "secular." We think the thirty minutes we spend reading the Bible is sacred, but the forty-five minutes we spend answering emails is secular. We think serving on the prayer team is holy, but serving a meal to a grumpy toddler is just a chore.
When we look at the life of Jesus, we see something completely different. He spent the vast majority of His life as a carpenter. He spent His ministry years walking on dusty roads, eating with friends, and taking naps in boats. To Jesus, every moment was an opportunity to be in communion with the Father.
As a pastor and professional coach, I’ve seen so many people burn out because they are trying to "reach" God by running away from their daily responsibilities. But grace: the kind of grace we cherish in our Assemblies of God tradition: tells us that God has already reached down to us. He is present in the kitchen, the office, and the gym.

Service as a Liturgy of Love
Serving others is often where the sacred ordinary becomes most visible. When we talk about serving, we usually think of church programs or mission trips. Those are vital, but service is much broader than a scheduled event. Service is the way we interact with the world around us.
Think about the last time you helped a neighbor with their trash or stayed late to help a coworker finish a project. Those weren't just "nice things to do." They were acts of worship. When we approach ordinary tasks with mindfulness and care, they become an offering.
Intentionality is the bridge between the mundane and the holy. When you fold laundry, you can pray for the people who will wear those clothes. When you prepare a meal, you can thank God for His provision. This isn't about adding more to your schedule; it’s about changing the "why" behind what you’re already doing. It’s turning your routine into a liturgy of love.
Finding God in the Details
So, how do we actually start seeing God in the middle of a busy Tuesday? It starts with what I call "Spiritual Attention." It’s the practice of noticing the Divine fingerprints on your daily life.
The Warmth of Connection: God is present in the smile of a friend or the hand of a spouse.
The Beauty of Creation: Even in a suburban parking lot, the way the light hits the trees is a gift from the Creator.
The Peace of Order: Cleaning a workspace or organizing a drawer can be a way of reflecting God’s character of peace and order.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or disconnected, I want you to know that you aren't alone. We’re here to walk with you.

5 Ways to Practice the Sacred Ordinary Today
If you want to upgrade your spiritual awareness, try these five simple "life hacks" for finding God in your daily routine:
The "First Breath" Prayer: Before you check your phone or get out of bed, take one deep breath and simply say, "Lord, thank You for this day. Help me see You in it."
Turn Commutes into Conversations: Instead of listening to the news or a playlist, use your drive time to talk to God like He’s sitting in the passenger seat. Tell Him your worries and your wins.
Find the "Sacramental" in Chores: Pick one task you usually dislike: like doing the dishes or mowing the lawn: and decide to do it as a silent prayer of gratitude.
Practice Intentional Reflection: At the end of the day, look back at your morning, midday, and evening. Ask yourself: "Where did I feel God's love today?" You might be surprised by the answer.
Bless Before You Depart: Before you leave your house, your car, or your office, offer a quick ten-second prayer of blessing over the place and the people you are leaving behind.

Leadership and the Small Stuff
In my work as a professional coach and mentor, I constantly remind leaders that their impact isn't just in the big speeches or the strategic plans. True leadership is found in the way you treat the "ordinary" people in your life. It’s in the way you listen to an intern or the grace you show when a project fails.
Leading like Jesus means recognizing that every person is a priceless child of God. When you see the sacred in the person standing in front of you: regardless of their title: you are leading from a place of spiritual strength. This is how we build "Connection Culture" in our workplaces and our homes. It’s about moving from "locked doors" to "open hearts," as I discussed in a recent post about handling the unexpected with grace.
A Community for the Journey
Living out the "Sacred Ordinary" is easier when you aren't doing it alone. We all need a community that reminds us of the truth when the world gets loud. That’s exactly why we created Boundless Online Church.
Boundless isn't just a place to watch a sermon; it’s a spiritual home. It’s a place where we prioritize family groups, grounded teaching, and the kind of "Truth with Grace" that helps you grow into the person God called you to be. Whether you are a young single, a new parent, or someone who has been walking with the Lord for decades, there is a seat for you at the table.

Step Into Your Upgrade
You don't have to wait for a special occasion to experience the presence of God. He is with you right now, in the very room where you are reading this. He is in the work you have to do this afternoon and the people you will see this evening.

Reflection Question: What is one mundane task in your schedule today that you can reframe as an act of worship?
Small Action Step: The next time you are waiting—in line, in traffic, or for a meeting—take three deep breaths and thank God for His presence in that specific, quiet moment.
