Welcome to your evening briefing. It’s Wednesday, February 25, 2026. I’m Layne McDonald, and at The McReport, we believe that staying informed shouldn’t mean losing your peace. As you settle into your evening, let’s look at the headlines that shaped our day, not just through the lens of a newsroom, but through the lens of scripture.
In a world that feels increasingly polarized and fast-paced, we aim to provide a "pastor’s newsroom" approach: truth without cruelty and conviction without contempt. Here is what you need to know today.
1. The State of the Union and the Economic Shift
The Facts President Trump delivered his State of the Union address last night, a lengthy speech centered on what he described as a "transformation like no one has ever seen before." The President focused heavily on his administration's immigration crackdown and economic policies, specifically blaming the opposition party for ongoing inflation and border security challenges.
In response, Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger provided the Democratic rebuttal. She questioned the efficacy of the President's tactics, asking whether current policies are truly keeping American families safe or if they are creating unnecessary division.
On the economic front, the Supreme Court recently struck down the administration’s emergency tariffs. In a swift move following that ruling, the President announced a new 15% global tariff, utilizing a different legal authority to maintain his economic agenda.
The Lens As believers in the Assemblies of God tradition, we recognize that "The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it" (Psalm 24:1). While political leaders debate the best way to manage a nation’s wealth, our primary citizenship is in a Kingdom that is not of this world.
The Bible instructs us in 1 Timothy 2:1-2 to pray for "kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness." This isn't a suggestion based on whether we agree with their policies; it’s a mandate for the health of our souls and our communities. Economic shifts and political rhetoric can create anxiety, but we serve a God who provides for our needs according to His riches in glory (Philippians 4:19).
The Response Instead of entering the fray of tribal political arguments tonight, let’s respond with stewardship and prayer.
Pray for Wisdom: Ask the Holy Spirit to grant our leaders: both the President and the opposition: discernment that leads to the flourishing of all people.
Practice Peace: If economic news makes you feel unstable, remind yourself that your security is found in Christ’s eternal provision, not a fluctuating market or a new tariff.

2. Tensions at the Border and ICE Reform
The Facts Immigration remains the most flashpoint issue in Washington. The President defended recent border enforcement operations, which have come under intense scrutiny following a tragic incident where federal agents killed two residents in Minneapolis during an enforcement action.
Simultaneously, Congressional Democrats are pushing for significant reforms to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as part of ongoing Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding negotiations. The debate centers on how to balance national security with the humane treatment of individuals and the protection of civil liberties.
The Lens Scripture gives us a dual mandate regarding borders and people. On one hand, Romans 13 speaks to the necessity of the rule of law and the government’s role in maintaining order. On the other hand, the Bible is overflowing with commands to care for the "sojourner" or the "stranger." Matthew 25:35 reminds us of Jesus' words: "I was a stranger and you invited me in."
In the Assemblies of God, we hold a high view of human dignity (Imago Dei). Every person involved in these headlines: from the federal agents to the residents in Minneapolis to the families at the border: is made in the image of God. When life is lost or people are suffering, our first reaction should be one of mourning and a desire for justice tempered by mercy.
The Response
Choose Compassion: It is possible to believe in secure borders and also believe in the radical dignity of the immigrant. Seek a middle ground of "truth with grace."
Intercede for Safety: Pray for the safety of law enforcement officers and for the protection of vulnerable families.
3. Global Unrest: Iran, China, and Musk’s Mexico Dispute
The Facts On the international stage, reports indicate that Iran is nearing a deal to purchase advanced anti-ship cruise missiles from China, a move that could significantly shift the balance of power in the Middle East.
Closer to home, the Mexican government has warned of potential legal action against Elon Musk. The dispute stems from claims Musk allegedly shared linking the Mexican President to drug cartels: claims the Mexican government insists are false and defamatory.
The Lens We are living in a time that Jesus described as having "wars and rumors of wars" (Mark 13:7). As students of the Word, we know that global shifts and international tensions are a reminder that the world is in need of the Prince of Peace. We look toward the Second Coming of Christ as our ultimate hope, but until that day, we are called to be peacemakers.
The dispute between a private tech mogul and a sovereign nation also highlights the power of the tongue (or the post). James 3:5 warns us that "the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts." In the digital age, our words can spark international incidents just as easily as they can build up a neighbor.
The Response
Filter Your Feed: Before sharing news about global conflicts or high-profile disputes, ask the Holy Spirit for discernment. Is this helpful? Is it true?
Focus on the Kingdom: When news of missiles and global tension rises, let it be a prompt to pray for missionaries and believers in those regions who are sharing the Gospel of peace.

4. Health Alerts: South Carolina Measles Outbreak
The Facts Public health officials in South Carolina have declared a measles outbreak, prompting immediate interventions. At the same time, legal disputes continue to emerge across the country involving universities and banks regarding their remaining vaccine policies.
The Lens One of the core tenets of the Assemblies of God is a belief in Divine Healing. We believe that God is the Great Physician and that He still heals today. However, we also believe that God gives wisdom to men and women in the medical field to care for the physical body.
The tension between personal liberty and public health can be stressful. As believers, we should approach health crises with a spirit of "power, love, and a sound mind" (2 Timothy 1:7), rather than a spirit of fear.
The Response
Pray for Healing: If you know someone affected by illness, or for the families in South Carolina, pray for God’s healing touch to be upon them.
Walk in Wisdom: Be a source of calm in your community. Instead of fueling health-related anxieties, offer practical help and prayerful support to those who are worried.
Bringing It All Together
The news cycle of February 25, 2026, presents us with a familiar choice: we can be consumed by the chaos, or we can be anchored by the Cross.
Whether it is a new global tariff, a debate in the halls of Congress, or a health alert in the South, none of these things have caught God by surprise. He is still on the throne. As you close your eyes tonight, remember that the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives in you. You have the equipment to handle today’s news with grace, wisdom, and an unshakable hope.
