Hey there, and welcome back to The McReport. I’m Layne McDonald, and I’m glad you’re here.
In a world where the 24-hour news cycle can feel like a firehose of anxiety, it’s our goal to help you take a breath, look at the facts, and then view those facts through the lens of Scripture. Today is Thursday, February 26, 2026, and we are looking at three massive stories that are dominating the headlines. From military escalations just off our coast to high-stakes nuclear talks and the ongoing fallout of a global scandal, there is a lot to process.
As we dive in, remember: we aren't here to tell you how to vote or which "side" to take in a political shouting match. We are here to seek the truth and find the "peace that surpasses all understanding" (Philippians 4:7) in the middle of it all.
1. Escalation in the Caribbean: The US-Cuba Standoff
The Facts
The situation off the coast of Florida has turned critical. Earlier this week, Cuban border guards engaged in a fatal shootout with a Florida-registered speedboat. According to official reports, four people were killed and six others were wounded during the exchange.
Cuban officials are claiming that the ten armed individuals on the boat intended to enter Cuba for "terroristic purposes." However, the U.S. government has expressed significant skepticism regarding this account, questioning the narrative provided by Havana. In response to the incident, the U.S. military has rapidly shifted its posture. Currently, dozens of fighter jets and reconnaissance planes have been deployed to the region, alongside approximately 35,000 troops. President Trump has stated that "all options are on the table," signaling a high level of military readiness and a potential for further escalation.
The Biblical Lens
In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe in the sanctity of life and the importance of national sovereignty, but we also lean heavily into the promise of the Second Coming of Christ. When we see "wars and rumors of wars" (Matthew 24:6), it isn't a cue to panic, but a reminder that our ultimate security doesn't lie in a fleet of fighter jets.
Scripture tells us that "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God" (Matthew 5:9). At the same time, Romans 13 reminds us that authorities "do not bear the sword in vain." There is a delicate balance between the duty of a government to protect its citizens and the Christian call to seek peace.

The Response
Our response shouldn't be one of "saber-rattling" or fear. Instead, we should:
Pray for De-escalation: Ask the Lord to grant wisdom to military leaders and diplomats to prevent further loss of life.
Comfort the Mourning: Regardless of the politics involved, families have lost loved ones in this shootout. We pray for God's comfort to reach them.
Trust in Sovereignty: Remember that God is the ultimate judge of nations. We can remain calm because we know who holds the future.
2. The High Stakes of the Iran Nuclear Negotiations
The Facts
Moving across the globe to Geneva, the third round of nuclear negotiations between the U.S. and Iran is currently underway. These talks are happening in a high-pressure environment. Just before the sessions began, the Trump administration imposed fresh sanctions on 30 individuals accused of facilitating Iran’s oil sales and weapons production.
Steve Witoff, the U.S. envoy, has raised the stakes by claiming that Iran now possesses enough fissile material to produce a nuclear bomb within a very short timeframe. The message from the U.S. delegation has been clear: a failure to reach a breakthrough in these negotiations could trigger direct military action.
The Biblical Lens
The Middle East has always held a significant place in biblical prophecy and the AG worldview. We look at these developments with a sense of "blessed hope." We understand that the world is in a state of labor, awaiting the return of Jesus.
However, we also believe in the power of "Divine Healing": not just for the body, but for nations. The Bible instructs us in 1 Timothy 2:1-2 to pray "for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way." The threat of nuclear conflict is a reminder of the fragility of man-made peace and the desperate need for the Prince of Peace.

The Response
How do we handle news of nuclear threats?
Intercede for Wisdom: Pray specifically for the negotiators in Geneva. Pray that hidden agendas would be revealed and that a path to safety would be found.
Focus on Mission: If the time is short, our mission to share the Gospel (Salvation) becomes even more urgent. Let the headlines move us toward sharing Christ with our neighbors rather than huddling in a bunker.
Reject Spirit of Fear: "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind" (2 Timothy 1:7).
3. The Epstein Scandal: Shadows Coming to Light
The Facts
The fallout from the Jeffrey Epstein investigation continues to shake the highest levels of American academia and politics. Recently, we have seen a wave of resignations and intense scrutiny directed at prominent figures. This includes former Harvard President Lawrence Summers, former Senator Bob Kerry, and Nobel laureate Richard Axel, all due to their reported connections with Epstein.
Additionally, news has broken that Hillary Clinton is preparing to testify in a deposition related to the ongoing Congressional investigation into the Epstein network. This indicates that the legal ramifications of this years-old scandal are far from over, as investigators continue to pull on threads that lead to some of the most influential people in the country.
The Biblical Lens
There is a powerful scriptural principle at work here: "For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light" (Luke 8:17). As Christians, we value truth and justice, particularly when it comes to the protection of the vulnerable.
The Assemblies of God faith emphasizes the reality of sin and the necessity of repentance. This scandal is a sobering reminder of the darkness that can exist in the corridors of power. It also highlights the biblical mandate to seek justice for the oppressed and to hold leaders to a standard of integrity.

The Response
In the face of such systemic failure, our response should be:
A Call for Integrity: Pray for our leaders to have a "heart of flesh" and a conscience that is sensitive to the truth.
Support for the Vulnerable: Let this be a reminder to support organizations that protect children and fight human trafficking.
Personal Reflection: While we look at the failures of public figures, we should also ask God to "search us and know our hearts" (Psalm 139:23), ensuring we are walking in the light ourselves.
Bringing It All Together
It is easy to look at these three stories: military tension, nuclear threats, and institutional scandal: and feel like the world is spinning out of control. But for the believer, these are not reasons to despair. They are reasons to look up.
We believe in a God who is bigger than Caribbean border disputes, more powerful than nuclear fissile material, and more just than any earthly court. Our role is to stay informed, stay prayerful, and stay focused on the mission of Christ.
Whether it is the "Second Coming" we look forward to or the "Salvation" we offer to those around us, our perspective is rooted in a reality that the evening news can't touch.

Thank you for trusting us to bring you the news today. We don't take your time for granted. Let’s move forward today with calm hearts and clear minds, knowing that the Lord is on the throne.
