Here are five stories shaping today, stripped of the panic and wrapped in biblical clarity. The Facts: What's Actually Happening 1. Historic Northeast Blizzard Disrupts Millions Around 41 million people across the Northeast are navigating blizzard conditions today. New York City issued its first blizzard warning in nearly a decade, along with a travel ban that lasted until noon. Several states have declared emergencies as at least a foot of snow blankets the region, grounding thousands of flights and closing major roadways. The storm system is expected to move out by Tuesday morning. 2. Armed Intruder Shot at Mar-a-Lago Early Sunday morning around 1:30 a.m., an armed man carrying a shotgun breached the secure perimeter at President Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. Secret Service agents and a sheriff's deputy shot and killed the intruder. The man had traveled from North Carolina, and investigators are working to determine his motive and whether he acted alone. 3. But God's Word reminds us over and over that He is sovereign, even when the headlines scream chaos. Psalm 46:1-3 says, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging." Notice that? The psalmist doesn't say if trouble comes. He says though it comes: acknowledging that storms, literal and metaphorical, are part of life in a fallen world. But our response isn't panic. It's trust. The blizzard reminds us that nature itself groans under the weight of sin (Romans 8:22), but God is still the one who commands the winds and the waves. He hasn't lost control. The security breach at Mar-a-Lago is sobering. It's a reminder that no earthly fortress is impenetrable, no matter how many guards stand watch. Our ultimate security doesn't come from Secret Service agents: it comes from the One who neither slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121:4). The hockey victory is a gift. God loves to give us moments of joy, unity, and celebration. These aren't distractions from the "real news": they're glimpses of His goodness breaking through. It's okay to celebrate clean wins in the middle of a messy world. The violence in Mexico breaks our hearts, and it should. As believers in the Assemblies of God tradition, we hold firmly to the belief that every human life bears the image of God. When violence erupts, we grieve: not as those without hope, but as those who know that Jesus came to bring peace where the enemy brings destruction (John 10:10). And we pray for divine intervention, healing, and safety for the innocent caught in the crossfire. The medal count might seem trivial compared to the rest, but even in competition, we see the image of God at work: discipline, perseverance, teamwork, and the pursuit of excellence. These are kingdom values, even when they play out on a global stage. The Response: What We Do With This So what do we do when Monday's news feels heavy? We respond with wisdom, not worry. Here are five practical steps: 1. Pray for Those in the Storm If you're not in the blizzard zone, take 60 seconds right now to pray for the 41 million people who are. Pray for safe travel, warm shelters, and provision for those without power. Pray for emergency workers and plow drivers who are working around the clock. If you are in the storm, reach out. Psalm 91 promises that "no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent." That doesn't mean we ignore security or live recklessly: it means we don't live in fear. There's a difference. 3. Celebrate the Good Without Guilt It's okay to feel joy over the hockey win. You don't have to feel bad about smiling when good things happen. God is a God of joy (Nehemiah 8:10), and moments like these remind us that He still writes comeback stories. Share the highlight reel with your kids. Pray for Mexico: and for Wisdom in U.S. Policy The violence in Mexico isn't something we can fix with a single prayer or post, but we can intercede. Pray for protection over innocent civilians. Pray for wisdom for leaders on both sides of the border. Pray for the curtain to be pulled back on corruption and for justice to flow like a river (Amos 5:24). And if you know someone who's stranded or affected, reach out. A simple "thinking of you" text can be a lifeline. 5. Keep Perspective on the "Wins" The U.S. medal count is fun, but it's not where we stake our identity. Whether we win 33 medals or 3, our worth isn't wrapped up in national performance. Our identity is in Christ (Colossians 3:3). Enjoy the competition, but don't let it become an idol. The Invite: Stay Grounded, Not Buried Here's the bottom line: You can stay informed without being overwhelmed. You can care deeply about what's happening in the world without letting anxiety steal your peace. And you can walk through Monday: blizzards, headlines, and all: with the confidence that God is still on the throne. Philippians 4:6-7 says it best: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." That's the invitation today. Trade your anxiety for prayer.
