As we stand on the threshold of a historic milestone, the atmosphere across the United States is beginning to shift. We are now only months away from July 4, 2026: the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Across the nation, from the cobblestone streets of Philadelphia to the marble monuments of Washington, D.C., preparations are reaching a fever pitch.

This isn’t just another Independence Day; it is the Semiquincentennial. It is a moment to look back at two and a half centuries of a journey that has been marked by struggle, triumph, and an undeniable thread of what our founders called "Divine Providence."

The Facts: A Nation Prepares for 2026

The road to the 250th anniversary is being paved by massive logistical and historical efforts. The National Park Service (NPS) has been working for years to restore and prepare national shrines. Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, the birthplace of both the Declaration and the Constitution, is expected to see record-breaking crowds. According to the NPS, infrastructure improvements are underway to ensure that these sacred spaces can handle the millions of pilgrims: both domestic and international: who will visit to touch the hem of history.

The Heritage Foundation and other historical organizations have noted that the focus of this 250th celebration is "founding ideals." They aim to highlight the principles of liberty and self-government that served as the catalyst for the American experiment.

Events are not limited to the East Coast. Every state has been encouraged to form its own "America 250" commission. As believers, and specifically through our Assemblies of God (AG) heritage, we recognize that nations do not endure by human will alone. We believe in the sovereignty of God and His active participation in the affairs of men.

Psalm 33:12 tells us, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance."

When we talk about "Providence," we aren't using an antique term for luck. We are talking about the "Legacy of Grace." In the Pentecostal tradition, we celebrate the work of the Holy Spirit: the One who brings order out of chaos and provides strength when human capacity fails.

When you look at the timeline of America, you see more than just legislative sessions and battles. You see the First and Second Great Awakenings. You see the Azusa Street Revival that sparked a global movement of the Spirit. You see the way faith has been the "silent engine" behind the greatest movements of compassion, justice, and healing in our borders.

God’s hand hasn’t just been on the big moments; it has been on the individual lives of millions of believers who prayed, fasted, and worked to make their communities reflect the Kingdom of God. This is the "Hidden Good News" of the American story: while headlines focus on conflict, the Spirit has been quietly working in the hearts of the faithful to sustain the nation’s moral fabric.

The Response: Renewal and Remembrance

As we approach this anniversary, the natural human response is often pride or, conversely, a focus on our many national failures. However, the biblical response is one of gratitude and repentance.

Lamentations 3:22-23 reminds us: "Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."

This verse is the cornerstone of our hope. As we look at the 250-year legacy, we see a God whose mercies have been new every single morning, even when we didn't deserve them.

The "Hidden Good News" here is that God is not finished with us. The same Spirit that hovered over the founding, the same Spirit that brought revival to the tents of the early 1900s, is still active today. Our response shouldn't just be to watch fireworks; it should be to become a "Living Legacy."

How do we do that? We do it by:

  1. Recognizing the Miracle: Acknowledging that the survival of a nation built on liberty is a testament to God’s grace.

  2. Stewarding the Faith: Ensuring that the Gospel of Salvation and the power of the Holy Spirit are passed down to the next generation.

  3. Living with Purpose: Realizing that our citizenship in heaven informs how we act as citizens on earth: with kindness, mercy, and a commitment to divine healing for a hurting world.

As the nation prepares for parades and speeches, let our preparation be spiritual. Let us be the ones who stand in the gap, praying for our leaders and our neighbors, and pointing everyone toward the ultimate source of freedom: Jesus Christ.
