Back to the Word: Celebrities Join Public Bible Reading to Stir Apathetic Hearts

The Facts
A collective of high-profile actors, musicians, and public speakers within the evangelical community has launched a coordinated, week-long initiative to read the entire Bible aloud in both physical public squares and digital platforms. The campaign, which began earlier this week, involves a non-stop, 168-hour relay of Scripture proclamation.
The organizers of this initiative state that their primary goal is to confront what they describe as an "apathetic church." By bringing the Word of God into the public eye: and ear: they hope to re-engage believers who have drifted into spiritual passivity. The initiative highlights a troubling trend: current data shows that scriptural literacy is at a historic low among self-identified Christians.
The public readings are taking place in various locations, ranging from city parks and community centers to continuous live streams on social media. Participants are reading the Bible chronologically, without commentary, allowing the text to stand on its own. While the event features recognizable names from the entertainment industry, the organizers emphasize that the focus is intended to remain on the "living power" of the text rather than the fame of the readers.

Critics of the move have questioned whether the involvement of celebrities turns a sacred practice into a performance or a "stunt." However, those leading the charge argue that the visibility of these figures is merely a tool to capture the attention of a culture that is increasingly distracted by digital noise and secular narratives.
The Lens
From an Assemblies of God perspective, we view the Word of God as much more than a historical record or a moral guide. We believe that the Bible is the inspired, infallible, and authoritative Word of God. As Hebrews 4:12 reminds us, "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart."
In the Pentecostal tradition, there is a profound understanding that the Holy Spirit works in tandem with the proclamation of Scripture. We believe that the Word provides the essential foundation for the Spirit’s work. Without the Word, spiritual experiences can become untethered; without the Spirit, the Word can be approached as a dead letter. When the Word is spoken aloud, it creates an environment where the Holy Spirit can bring conviction, healing, and revival.
The "apathy" mentioned by the initiative's organizers is a spiritual condition we take seriously. In a world where many are waiting for the Second Coming of Christ, the call to be "sober and alert" is paramount. Apathy is the enemy of readiness. When the Church loses its hunger for the Word, it loses its connection to its "first love."

While some may view celebrity involvement with skepticism, we look at the heart of the movement: returning the Church to the Scripture. If the public reading of the Bible stirs a single soul to repent, seek salvation, or cry out for the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, then the effort is biblically justified. We believe in the power of the "living Word" to break through the hardest hearts and the deepest indifference.
Scripture is the primary way God speaks to His people today. In an age of misinformation and competing "truths," the Bible stands as the ultimate standard. By reading it publicly, these believers are essentially declaring that God’s Truth is not something to be hidden or kept within the four walls of a sanctuary; it is a light meant for the entire world to see.
The Response
The decline in scriptural literacy is not just a statistic; it is a call to action for every individual believer. If we find ourselves feeling distant from God or indifferent to the things of the Spirit, the remedy is often found in the very pages we have neglected.

Take a moment today to step away from the digital noise. Find a quiet place, or even a busy one, and read a chapter of the Bible aloud. There is something transformative about hearing the promises of God spoken into the air. Do not just read for information; read for transformation.
As you read, ask the Holy Spirit to breathe life into the verses. Listen for His voice. Allow the Word to search your heart and refresh your spirit. If you have been feeling apathetic, let the Scripture be the spark that reignites your passion for Christ.
Consider the following steps this week:
Commit to reading one book of the Bible in its entirety over the next few days.
Share a specific verse that moved you with a friend or on your social media without added fluff: let the Word speak.
Pray for the Church to experience a renewed hunger for the Truth that leads to genuine revival and preparation for the Lord's return.

The Word is our foundation. It is the source of our hope, the map for our salvation, and the catalyst for the miraculous. Let us return to it with all our hearts.
