Hope in the Stadium: 90,000 Gather in Lima as Thousands Respond to the Gospel Invitation

The Facts
On March 8 and 9, 2026, the city of Lima, Peru, became the epicenter of a massive spiritual gathering. Over 90,000 people converged on the Estadio Nacional (National Stadium) for an event titled "Esperanza Lima." The evangelistic festival was led by Franklin Graham, president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA).
The scale of the event exceeded the physical capacity of the venue. Both nights, the stadium reached its maximum occupancy, leaving thousands of people in the surrounding streets. These individuals stood outside the gates, listening to the message and music through external speaker systems.
To facilitate this massive turnout, organizers coordinated a logistical operation involving 600 free buses. These buses transported residents from various neighborhoods across the capital, ensuring that transportation costs were not a barrier to attendance. The event was the result of a collaborative effort between the BGEA and more than 2,300 local churches in Lima.

The program featured a blend of music and preaching. International Christian artists, including Charity Gayle, The Afters, Christine D’Clario, and the Jahaziel Band, performed for the crowds. The music served as a prelude to the central message delivered by Franklin Graham.
Graham’s sermon focused on the theme of God’s mercy and the possibility of a new beginning. He shared the parable of the prodigal son from Luke 15, illustrating the narrative of a son who squanders his inheritance but is welcomed back by a forgiving father. Graham emphasized that this story mirrors God's desire to forgive and restore any individual who turns toward Him.
When the invitation to commit to Christ was given, the response was immediate. Thousands of people moved from their seats toward the front of the stage. In many sections of the stadium, the aisles were filled with people even before Graham had finished his closing remarks. According to preliminary reports from the BGEA and local organizers, nearly 10,000 individuals made a public commitment to follow Jesus over the two-day period.
This event occurred exactly 28 years after Franklin Graham last preached in the same stadium in March 1998. Organizers noted that while Peru is a deeply religious nation, statistical data suggests only about 14% of Lima’s population claims a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. This disparity was a primary motivator for the "Esperanza Lima" festival.

The Lens
From a Pentecostal and Assemblies of God perspective, what happened in Lima is not merely a statistical success; it is a manifestation of the "Harvest." We believe that the Holy Spirit is actively moving across the globe to draw people to salvation in these final days. The massive response in Lima echoes the biblical account found in Acts 2:41: "Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day."
The fact that thousands moved toward the stage before the message even ended suggests a "Spirit-led revival." In our tradition, we recognize that the preaching of the Word, when combined with the presence of the Holy Spirit, convicts the heart in a way that human logic cannot. This is the fulfillment of the Great Commission as stated in Mark 16:15: "He said to them, 'Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.'"
The collaboration of 2,300 churches is also significant. In the AG faith, we value the unity of the Body of Christ. When denominations put aside minor differences to focus on the central tenets of Salvation and the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, the spiritual atmosphere of a city changes. The logistics: the buses, the planning, the music: were the "wineskins," but the response of the people was the "new wine."
We also see this as a moment of divine timing. Returning to the same stadium 28 years later suggests a generational closing of a circle. Those who were children in 1998 may have been the ones bringing their own children to the stadium in 2026. This continuity is a hallmark of how God works through families and communities over decades.

The Response
The news from Lima is a reminder that the Gospel remains the most powerful force for change in the world. While headlines are often filled with conflict and economic instability, the sight of 90,000 people seeking hope provides a necessary balance. It is a "hidden good news" story that reminds us of the hunger for peace and forgiveness that exists in every human heart.
Our response should be one of prayer and support. For the nearly 10,000 new believers in Peru, this is only the beginning. They are entering a new life in a world that can be challenging. They need the local churches: those 2,300 partner congregations: to provide mentorship, discipleship, and a community of faith.
We should also reflect on our own surroundings. If 90,000 people can gather in a stadium in Lima to hear about the love of God, what is stopping us from sharing that same hope with our neighbors? The harvest is not limited to South America; it is ripe wherever there are people searching for meaning.
Let us pray specifically for the follow-up efforts in Peru. Pray that the seeds planted in the National Stadium find good soil. Pray for the pastors and lay-leaders who will now walk alongside these thousands of new brothers and sisters in Christ.
