Leading with Presence: The Power of Eye Contact

Something powerful happens when you truly look at someone.
Not a quick glance. Not a distracted half-look while checking your phone. But that intentional, focused moment when your eyes meet theirs and they know, without a single word, that they matter to you.
As a connection pastor or church leader, you carry an incredible responsibility. Every Sunday, every hallway conversation, every counseling session presents an opportunity to communicate something profound: You are seen. You are valued. You belong here.
And it often starts with your eyes.
The Vision: Why Presence Matters More Than Programs
Here's something I've learned after years of ministry and leadership coaching: people don't remember your perfectly executed programs. They remember how you made them feel.
Research tells us that within the first seven seconds of meeting someone, they've already decided whether you're trustworthy. Seven seconds. That's barely enough time to say hello. But in those brief moments, your body language, especially your eye contact, speaks volumes about your character and intentions.
Think about Jesus for a moment. Scripture repeatedly mentions how He looked at people. When the rich young ruler approached Him, Mark 10:21 says Jesus "looked at him and loved him." That wasn't a casual observation. It was intentional, compassionate presence.
Your eyes communicate what your words sometimes cannot: warmth, safety, genuine care.

The Emotional Intelligence Behind Eye Contact
Great leaders understand that connection precedes influence. You can have the most brilliant insights, the most anointed message, the most strategic vision, but if people don't feel safe with you, none of it lands.
Eye contact functions as a trust signal. When you look someone in the eyes while they're speaking, you're telling them:
"I'm fully here with you right now."
"What you're saying matters to me."
"You have my undivided attention."
This is the foundation of empathetic listening, one of the most powerful leadership skills you can develop. And it goes far beyond simply making eye contact. True empathetic listening involves:
Putting away distractions (yes, that means the phone goes down)
Focusing your energy entirely on the other person
Asking clarifying questions to ensure you understand
Restating what you've heard to validate their experience
When someone walks into your church feeling invisible, broken, or uncertain: and you meet them with that kind of presence: everything shifts. They experience a glimpse of how God sees them: fully known and deeply loved.

The Practical Application: Building a Culture of Presence
So how do you actually cultivate this kind of presence in your daily ministry? Let me give you some practical steps you can implement starting this week.
1. Practice the "First and Last" Principle
One leadership mentor shared a powerful habit: when someone approaches you, make genuine eye contact at the beginning of your interaction and again as they walk away. That second look: the quick acknowledgment as they leave: communicates something lasting: "You still matter to me even after our conversation ends."
Try this on Sunday morning. When you greet someone, look them in the eyes and offer a warm welcome. Then, as they move on toward the sanctuary, catch their eye one more time with a smile or nod. It's a small gesture with massive impact.
2. Create "Phone-Free Zones" in Your Interactions
Nothing kills presence faster than a buzzing phone. When you're in conversation: especially pastoral conversations: commit to keeping your phone completely out of sight. Not face-down on the table. Not in your hand "just in case." Out of sight.
This single discipline will transform the quality of your connections. People can feel when they have your full attention versus when they're competing with notifications.
3. Slow Down Your Greeting Pace
Many connection pastors feel pressure to greet as many people as possible before service. I get it: there are a lot of people and limited time. But here's the truth: five meaningful, present interactions will build more trust than fifty rushed handshakes.
Slow down. Look people in the eyes. Use their name if you know it. Ask one genuine question and actually listen to the answer.

4. Master the Art of "Soft Eyes"
There's a difference between intense, intimidating eye contact and warm, inviting eye contact. Practice what some call "soft eyes": a relaxed, open gaze that communicates safety rather than scrutiny.
If you're not sure what this looks like, think about how you look at someone you genuinely love. That's the energy you want to bring into your leadership presence.
5. Translate Presence to Digital Spaces
Here's a challenge for our digital age: on video calls and Zoom meetings, you have roughly 1/50th of a second to make a visual impression. That's a fraction of what you get in person.
The key? Look at your camera, not the screen. This creates the illusion of eye contact for the person on the other end. Combine this with an engaged posture and genuine facial expressions, and you can build connection even through a screen.
The Spiritual Foundation: Seeing as God Sees
Ultimately, leading with presence isn't a technique: it's an overflow of your relationship with God.
When you spend time in His presence, experiencing how He sees you with love and delight, you become capable of extending that same kind of attention to others. You stop rushing through interactions because you're anchored in something deeper than your to-do list.
Psalm 139:1-3 reminds us: "You have searched me, LORD, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways."
God is the ultimate model of presence. He misses nothing. He is never distracted. And He invites us to reflect that same attentiveness to the people He places in our path.
