Seeking the Shadow of the Almighty: Finding Peace in the Record-Breaking Heat

The thermometer is doing something unusual for this time of year. While we expect the gentle bloom of spring in mid-March, much of the Southwestern United States is currently facing a heatwave that feels more like the middle of July.
If you’ve stepped outside in Phoenix, Las Vegas, or Palm Springs over the last few days, you know the air feels different. It’s heavy, dry, and intense. It is easy for the physical heat to translate into a sense of internal friction, a feeling of being overwhelmed by the changing patterns of our world.
At The McReport, we want to look at this event with clear eyes and a steady heart. We want to provide the facts of the situation, look through the lens of Scripture, and find a practical way to respond that reflects the peace of Christ.
The Facts: A March Like No Other
The current weather data shows that we are living through a historic meteorological event. According to reports from CNN and various weather monitoring agencies, a massive high-pressure system has settled over the Southwest, pushing temperatures to record-breaking highs for the month of March.
Across Arizona, New Mexico, and Southern California, the numbers are striking. On Friday, March 20, 2026, the temperature in Thermal, California, hit 108°F. This ties the warmest temperature ever recorded in the United States during the month of March. Over 40 million people are currently under some form of heat alert.
In Arizona, cities like Phoenix and Tucson have seen consecutive days of record-setting highs, with temperatures climbing 15 to 20 degrees above the historical average for this date. New Mexico is experiencing similar spikes, with the heat contributing to increased concerns regarding early-season wildfire risks and water evaporation in crucial reservoirs.
Meteorologists note that while heatwaves are a natural part of the climate in these regions, the timing and intensity of this specific wave are remarkable. Since March 11, over 550 record highs have been set across the western and central United States.

The Biblical Lens: Finding the Shadow
When the physical world becomes intense, we often look for a place of refuge. In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe that God is not a distant observer of our environment. He is our Provider, our Healer, and our Shelter.
Psalm 121:5-6 offers a beautiful promise for moments like this: "The Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night."
This isn’t just poetic language. It is a spiritual reality. In the ancient Near East, the heat of the sun was a constant threat to life. To call God your "shade" was to call Him your protector and your very source of survival. When we see the mercury rise to 108 degrees, we are reminded that our physical safety and our spiritual peace both come from the same hand.
Isaiah 25:4 further anchors this truth: "You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat."
This verse reminds us that God’s "shade" is specifically for those in distress. It is a reminder that in seasons of physical or environmental extremity, we can lean into the presence of the Holy Spirit. As we look toward the Second Coming of Christ, we understand that these shifts in our world are part of a larger story, a story that eventually leads to a place where the elements no longer cause suffering.
Revelation 7:16 speaks of this ultimate restoration: "Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat down on them, nor any scorching heat."

Balanced Viewpoints: Concern and Resilience
There are two main ways to interpret this record-breaking heat, and both deserve a seat at the table.
On one side, there is deep concern over climate shifts. Many scientists and community leaders point to these record-breaking events as evidence of a changing planet. They argue that the increasing frequency of "once-in-a-century" heatwaves requires us to rethink our stewardship of the earth, our energy consumption, and our infrastructure. This perspective is rooted in a desire to protect the vulnerable and ensure a livable future for the next generation.
On the other side, there is a focus on human resilience and trust in God’s sovereignty. Many in the Southwest have lived through harsh conditions for generations. This perspective emphasizes our ability to adapt, to innovate with cooling technology, and to trust that God remains in control of the seasons.
The Middle Ground: We can acknowledge that the climate is changing and that we have a responsibility to be good stewards of creation, while simultaneously refusing to give in to fear. We do not have to live in a state of "climate anxiety." Instead, we can live in a state of "biblical vigilance", being aware of the signs of the times, caring for our planet, but ultimately trusting that our lives are in God’s hands.
The Response: Calm Next Steps
How do we respond to 108-degree heat in March? We respond with the love of Christ and practical wisdom.
While the heat is "News of the Day," the "Hidden Good News" is found in the way communities rally together when things get tough. We see it in neighbors checking on each other and in the quiet service of those who work behind the scenes.
Here are a few calm next steps you can take today:
1. Check on an elderly neighbor. Extreme heat is most dangerous for the elderly and those with underlying health conditions. A simple knock on the door or a phone call to ensure their air conditioning is working and they have plenty of water can literally save a life.
2. Pray for those working outdoors. Think of the construction crews, the delivery drivers, and the utility workers who are keeping our cities running in this heat. Pray for their physical safety and for their bodies to be strengthened. If you see a worker today, consider offering them a cold bottle of water.
3. Practice stewardship of your own peace. When the news is full of "record-breaking" and "unprecedented" headlines, it can create a low level of constant stress. Unplug from the 24-hour news cycle for a few hours. Spend time in the "shade" of God's Word. Remind yourself that the Creator of the sun is also the Prince of Peace.

A Perspective on Divine Healing
In our faith, we believe in Divine Healing. This isn't just about recovering from an illness; it's about God's sustaining power over our physical bodies. As the heat rises, we can pray for God's protection over our communities, that He would shield the vulnerable from heatstroke and provide relief to those whose bodies are struggling under the strain.
We serve a God who provided manna in the desert and water from a rock. He is more than capable of sustaining us through a record-breaking March.
Looking Ahead
We don't know what the rest of the spring or summer will hold, but we know who holds the seasons. Whether the temperatures return to normal next week or stay high, our posture remains the same: we are a people of hope, not a people of panic.
We invite you to stay connected with us as we navigate the news through a biblical lens. We are committed to giving you the truth without the tribalism and the facts without the fear.
If the heat or the headlines are weighing on you today, please know that you aren't alone. We are here to stand with you.
