Steady in the Shift: Understanding the Biblical Prophecy of Elam Amid Modern Iran Tensions

As we navigate the opening months of 2026, the global spotlight has remained fixed on the Middle East, specifically the nation of Iran. For many, the headlines are a source of deep anxiety. We see military maneuvers, shifts in regime stability, and a continuing diaspora that has sent millions of Iranians across the globe. But for the student of the Bible, these are not just random geopolitical tremors. They are movements that invite us to look closer at the ancient scrolls of the prophets.
At The McReport, we aim to provide a "pastor’s newsroom" perspective, one that looks at the facts on the ground and filters them through the lens of Scripture. Recently, Pastor Jack Hibbs of Calvary Chapel Chino Hills has brought renewed attention to a specific, often overlooked prophecy concerning the ancient land of Elam. By understanding this prophecy, we can trade our fear for a steady, grounded faith.
The Facts: A Nation in Transition
The current situation in Iran is multifaceted. Over the last few years, the region has faced significant military pressure and internal restructuring. Geopolitically, the "axis of resistance" has faced unprecedented challenges. We have observed a series of targeted strikes and internal unrest that have many analysts questioning the long-term viability of the current administrative structure in Tehran.
Beyond the military aspect, there is the human reality. The Iranian diaspora has reached historic levels. Millions of Iranians now live outside their homeland, scattered across Europe, the Americas, and neighboring Middle Eastern countries. Many have left due to economic collapse, restrictive social laws, and political instability. Inside the country, reports continue to emerge of a rapidly growing underground church, suggesting a spiritual shift is happening beneath the surface of the political turmoil.

These are the cold, hard facts: a nation in a state of "scattering," a leadership under duress, and a population looking for hope beyond their current borders. While secular analysts see this as a regional crisis, those with a Pentecostal/AoG mindset see it as a potential alignment with the "latter days" described in the Bible.
The Lens: The Prophecy of Elam
To understand what is happening today, we look back to the words of the prophet Jeremiah. In Jeremiah 49:34-39, we find a specific oracle concerning Elam. Ancient Elam was a kingdom located in what is now southwestern Iran, specifically the Khuzestan province.
The prophecy says: "Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the foremost of their might. Against Elam I will bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and scatter them toward all those winds; there shall be no nations where the outcasts of Elam will not go.’" (Jeremiah 49:35-36).
Pastor Jack Hibbs points out that this prophecy contains three distinct phases: judgment on the leadership, a scattering of the people, and a final restoration.
1. Breaking the Bow: The "bow" represented the military might of Elam. In modern terms, this could be interpreted as the dismantling of a regime’s power to project force.
2. The Scattering: The text speaks of Elamites being driven to the "four winds." This aligns with the massive Iranian diaspora we see today. Iranians are literally in every corner of the globe.
3. The Restoration: Perhaps the most hopeful part of the prophecy is verse 39: "But it shall come to pass in the latter days: I will bring back the captives of Elam,’ says the Lord."

As an Assemblies of God community, we believe in the literal and future fulfillment of prophecy, while also acknowledging the work of the Holy Spirit in the present. If these events are indeed the fulfillment of Jeremiah 49, it suggests that the current "shift" in Iran is not just about regime change: it is about a divine appointment for the people of that land.
Balanced Viewpoints: Historical or Prophetic?
It is important to maintain a balanced perspective. Biblical scholars often debate the timeline of these events. Some historians point to the conquest of Elam by the Babylonians around 596 BC as the fulfillment of this prophecy. They argue that the "scattering" happened in antiquity and that the restoration occurred under the Persian King Cyrus.
However, many modern prophecy scholars, including Hibbs, argue that the language of "the latter days" (Jeremiah 49:39) points to an end-times context that was not fully exhausted in ancient history. They see the current Iranian regime's stance and the unique global scattering of its people as a much closer fit for the scale of Jeremiah’s vision.
Regardless of which side of the academic fence you sit on, the shared takeaway is the same: God is sovereign over the rise and fall of nations. Whether these events are a final fulfillment or a repeating historical pattern, the call for the believer remains the same: trust in God’s providence.
The Response: Living with a Sound Mind
When we hear talk of "end-times" and "prophecy," the natural human reaction is often fear or frantic speculation. But Scripture gives us a different mandate. In Matthew 24:6, Jesus told His disciples, "And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet."
The goal of understanding prophecy is not to pinpoint a date on a calendar, but to stabilize our hearts. 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us that "God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."

In the Pentecostal tradition, we emphasize the Baptism in the Holy Spirit as a source of power to be witnesses: even in times of global shaking. Instead of living in dread of the headlines, we are called to:
Pray for the Iranian People: Many "outcasts of Elam" are finding Christ in the diaspora. The underground church in Iran is one of the fastest-growing in the world.
Stay Steady: Faith is not the absence of trouble; it is the presence of God in the midst of it.
Develop Wisdom: Use this time to study the Word. Don't rely on soundbites; go back to Jeremiah and Ezekiel to see the bigger picture.

As we watch these "shifts" in Iran and throughout the Middle East, we don't have to be moved. We are part of a kingdom that cannot be shaken. The God who promised to "bring back the captives of Elam" is the same God who holds your future in His hands.
The Invite: Growing in Wisdom
Prophecy can be complex, and world events can feel overwhelming. We encourage you to take the next step in your spiritual journey by digging deeper into the Word. Spend time this week studying Jeremiah 49. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you a heart of wisdom and peace as you watch the news.
