Here's the thing: the 5 PM news cycle isn't built for your peace. It's engineered for your clicks, your eyeballs, your engagement. Networks know you're finally free from work tasks and ready to scroll. They know you're tired. They know your defenses are down.
But what if there was a better way? What if you could stay informed without sacrificing your sanity? What if Scripture actually had something powerful to say about how we consume the news?

FACTS: The 5 PM News Machine
Let's get real about what's actually happening when the evening news hits.
Traditional broadcast networks launch their flagship programs around 5 or 6 PM in most markets. Cable news enters peak viewership hours. Social media algorithms kick into high gear, pushing the most inflammatory content to the top of your feed. News apps send their most urgent push notifications.
Why? Because data shows this is when Americans are most likely to engage. You're commuting home, making dinner, or finally sitting down after a long day. Media companies compete viciously for your attention during these golden hours.
The problem? In that competition for eyeballs, context gets sacrificed. Nuance dies. Headlines get weaponized. A complex story gets boiled down to a seven-word headline designed to trigger fear, anger, or outrage.
This isn't conspiracy theory, it's business model. Engagement drives revenue. Controversy drives engagement. And the 5 PM slot is prime real estate.
Meanwhile, your nervous system takes the hit. Study after study shows that excessive news consumption, especially sensationalized evening news, correlates with increased anxiety, disrupted sleep, and heightened stress levels.
The facts are simple: the 5 PM news cycle is optimized for profit, not your peace.
LENS: What Scripture Says About Truth and Peace
Now let's filter this through the lens of Scripture and our Assemblies of God faith.
Jesus said something radical in John 8:32: "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." Notice He didn't say the truth would stress you out, terrify you, or leave you in despair. Truth, real truth, brings freedom.
But here's the catch: not everything presented as "truth" in the news actually qualifies. Paul warned Timothy about people who are "always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth" (2 Timothy 3:7). In our context, that looks like endless scrolling, consuming hundreds of stories, yet somehow ending up more confused and anxious than before.
The Assemblies of God has always emphasized the power and presence of the Holy Spirit to guide believers into all truth (John 16:13). That includes discernment about what we consume, how we consume it, and what we do with the information afterward.

Philippians 4:8 gives us a filter: "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things."
Notice Paul starts with "true", we're not called to ignorance. But he doesn't stop there. Truth without nobility, purity, or excellence becomes weaponized information. And that's exactly what much of the 5 PM news cycle delivers.
Jesus also promised us His peace, a peace "not as the world gives" (John 14:27). That means consuming news in a way that protects our peace isn't weak or irresponsible. It's spiritually wise.
The question isn't whether to stay informed. It's how to stay informed while remaining rooted in the peace of Christ, the discernment of the Spirit, and the truth that actually sets people free.

Instead of all-day grazing on headlines, choose one or two specific times to catch up on news. Maybe it's 5 PM for 20 minutes. Maybe it's morning coffee. The key is containment. Proverbs 25:28 says, "Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control." Build walls around your news consumption.
2. Choose Sources Carefully
Not all news is created equal. Some outlets prioritize accuracy and context. Others prioritize outrage. Do your homework. Find sources that present facts clearly, admit when they don't know something, and correct mistakes publicly. Reward good journalism with your attention.
3. Pray Before You Scroll

Replacing news time with worship or Scripture
Praying specifically for renewed peace and clarity
Seeking counsel from mature believers about media consumption
The Second Coming reality should also shape how we consume news. Yes, we watch. Yes, we stay aware. But we watch with hope, not horror. We know how the story ends. Jesus returns. Justice wins. Love triumphs. Every headline is a footnote in a story already written by God.
