A Story of a Handshake: Small Moments, Big Impact

A Story of a Handshake: Small Moments, Big Impact

I still remember the handshake that changed everything for me.

It was a Sunday morning, years ago. I was standing in the lobby of a church I'd never visited before, feeling completely out of place. My hands were in my pockets. My eyes were scanning for the exit. And then a man walked over: gray hair, kind eyes, firm but gentle grip: and said five words I'll never forget: "I'm glad you're here."

That was it. A handshake. A sentence. Maybe ten seconds of his time.

But for me? It was the beginning of a new chapter.

Why Small Moments Carry Big Weight

Here's something I've learned through decades of ministry, coaching, and walking alongside people through their hardest seasons: the moments that change us are rarely the big ones.

We think transformation happens at conferences, during dramatic altar calls, or after reading a certain book. And sometimes it does. But more often, real change sneaks in through the side door: through a smile from a stranger, a text that arrived at exactly the right time, or a handshake that said, "You belong here."

Help People, Even When You Know They Can't Help You Back

Research into the history of handshakes reveals something fascinating: this gesture has been around for at least seven million years. Anthropologists believe it evolved as a way to show trust, literally opening your hand to prove you held no weapon. Over time, it became a symbol of peace, agreement, and connection.

But here's what strikes me most: across cultures, across centuries, humans have instinctively understood that physical touch communicates something words cannot.

When you shake someone's hand, you're not just greeting them. You're saying:

  • I see you.

  • You matter.

  • We're on equal ground.

That's powerful stuff.

The Theology of Small Things

Scripture is full of small moments that carried eternal weight.

Think about the woman who touched the hem of Jesus's garment. She didn't make a scene. She didn't demand an audience. She just reached out: quietly, desperately: and everything changed (Mark 5:25-34).

Or consider the boy with five loaves and two fish. He didn't have much. But he offered what he had, and Jesus multiplied it into a miracle that fed thousands (John 6:1-14).

God has always been in the business of using small things for big purposes.

And that means your small moments matter more than you realize.

The handshake you offer to a nervous newcomer at church. The encouraging word you speak to a coworker who's struggling. The eye contact you give to the cashier when everyone else is staring at their phones. These aren't throwaway gestures. They're seeds.

And seeds, when planted in good soil, grow.

What a Handshake Really Says

I've spent years training church leaders, greeters, and ministry teams. And one of the first things I teach is this: your body communicates before your mouth ever opens.

When you extend your hand to someone, here's what they're reading (whether they know it or not):

  • Your posture tells them if you're genuinely interested or just going through the motions.

  • Your grip communicates confidence and warmth: or nervousness and distance.

  • Your eyes reveal whether you're truly present or already thinking about the next person.

A handshake isn't just a formality. It's a statement.

Layne McDonald Leadership Quote Graphic

And here's the thing: you don't need a title or a position to offer one. Being a leader doesn't require a title. Having a title doesn't make you one. Leadership: real leadership: shows up in how you treat people in the small moments.

Anyone can shake a hand. But not everyone can make someone feel seen in the process.

The Ripple Effect of Connection

That man who shook my hand years ago? He probably doesn't remember it. It was likely one of dozens of handshakes he offered that morning.

But I remember.

And because of that moment, I stayed. I got connected. I grew. And eventually, I found my calling in ministry: helping others experience the same kind of welcome I received.

That's the ripple effect of connection.

You never know which small moment will be the one that changes someone's trajectory. You never know when your kindness will be the thing that keeps someone from giving up. You never know how far your influence will reach.

Jesus knew this. That's why He didn't just preach to crowds: He stopped for individuals. He touched lepers. He called Zacchaeus down from a tree. He washed His disciples' feet.

He understood that ministry happens in the margins. In the moments between the big events. In the handshakes and the hellos.

A Challenge for You

So here's my challenge for you this week:

Be intentional about your small moments.

When you shake someone's hand, don't rush it. Look them in the eye. Mean it.

When you greet a stranger, remember that you might be the only warm welcome they receive all day.

When you have the choice between scrolling on your phone and engaging with the person next to you, choose connection.

These choices might seem insignificant. But they're not. They're the building blocks of a life that reflects Christ.

And who knows? The handshake you offer today might be the one someone remembers for the rest of their life.

Small Moments, Kingdom Impact

I've written books about leadership. I've coached executives through career transitions. I've led worship services and taught video courses on faith-driven living. But if you asked me what I'm most passionate about, it wouldn't be the big stuff.

It would be this: helping people understand that every interaction is an opportunity.

Every conversation. Every gesture. Every handshake.

Perspective is Everything

You don't have to wait for a platform or a pulpit. You don't have to wait until you have all the answers or all the resources. You can start right now, right where you are, with whatever you have.

Reach out your hand. Offer a smile. Say the kind thing.

And watch what God does with your small moments.

If you're hungry for more encouragement on living a life of intentional faith and leadership, I'd love to connect with you. Whether you're looking for coaching, training resources, books, or just a place to start, everything you need is at www.laynemcdonald.com. Let's walk this road together.
