"For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever." , 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 (NIV)
We have reached the end of a long journey, but in reality, we are standing at the edge of the true beginning. As we close out this Christian leadership Bible study and conclude Christian Discipleship 101, we must turn our eyes toward the horizon. If we only study the "how-to" of the Christian life without understanding the "where-to," we are like travelers who have mastered the art of packing a suitcase but have no destination in mind.
In our world today, many Christian worldview books focus so heavily on the "now" that they forget the "then." We get so wrapped up in the cultural battles, the daily stresses of parenting with biblical truth, and the mechanics of ministry that we lose the "blessed hope" that sustained the early Church. But a disciple without a future perspective is a disciple without an anchor.
As an Assemblies of God ministry, we believe that the return of Christ isn't just a theological footnote, it is one of our four cardinal doctrines. It is the fuel for our mission and the comfort for our souls. In this final chapter, we are going to look at the roadmap of what lies ahead: the return of our King, the restoration of our bodies, and the eternal home where righteousness dwells.
The Blessed Hope: Our Sudden Departure
The first thing every disciple must understand about the future is that it is imminent. We don't live as though the end is millions of years away; we live as though the trumpet could sound before you finish reading this sentence. This is what we call the "Blessed Hope."
In Assemblies of God theology, we hold to the pre-tribulation rapture of the Church. This isn't about "escaping" responsibility; it’s about the sovereign timing of God to rescue His Bride before the final outpouring of judgment on a Christ-rejecting world. 1 Thessalonians 4 tells us that the Lord Himself will descend. It won't be a secret whisper; it will be a "loud command."

For the disciple, this means we live in a state of constant readiness. If you knew Jesus was coming back at 4:00 PM today, how would that change your 2:00 PM meeting? How would it change the way you spoke to your spouse at lunch? The rapture is the great "sanctifier" of the Christian life. It forces us to hold the things of this world loosely. We are citizens of another kingdom, and our King is coming to fetch us.
This sudden departure isn't just for those of us who are alive. It is the great reunion. The "dead in Christ" will rise first. Every grave of every saint who died in the faith will be emptied. Every mother who wept over a child, every pastor who buried a faithful deacon, they will see them again in the twinkling of an eye. This is the first stage of our future, and it is the light at the end of every dark tunnel we walk through on earth.
The Millennial Reign: Christ’s Global Throne
After the rapture and the period of tribulation, the Bible describes a visible return of Christ. This time, He isn't coming as a suffering servant on a donkey; He is coming as the King of Kings on a white horse. And here is the best part: we are with Him.
The Millennial Reign is a literal 1,000-year period where Jesus Christ will rule the earth from Jerusalem. For centuries, humanity has tried to create a utopia through politics, education, and technology, and every time, we have failed. But during the Millennium, we will see what the world looks like when it is led by perfect Justice and perfect Love.
During this time:
National Israel will be saved and restored to its promised place.
Universal peace will be established. The "lion will lie down with the lamb."
The Curse will be pushed back, though not yet fully removed.
As disciples, we are being trained now for leadership then. Every time you choose integrity in your business, every time you lead your family with grace, you are practicing for the day when we will "reign with Him." This isn't a fairy tale; it is the coming geopolitical reality of the universe.
The Resurrection: Beauty for Ashes
One of the biggest misconceptions in the modern church is that we will spend eternity as "ghosts" floating on clouds. Nothing could be further from the biblical truth. Our future is a physical one.
In 1 Corinthians 15, the Apostle Paul gives us the "Resurrection Blueprint." He uses the analogy of a seed. When you plant a seed in the ground, it "dies," but it doesn't stay a seed. It erupts into something far more beautiful, far more powerful, yet essentially the same "kind."

Our current bodies are "perishable." They get sick, they age, they fail us. But the body that is raised is "imperishable." Imagine a body that never feels the sting of cancer, never knows the fog of dementia, and never tires of serving God. This is the "Resurrection Hope."
Jesus' own resurrected body is the prototype. He could eat fish, He could be touched, and yet He was no longer bound by the limitations of the fall. As a disciple, this gives you an incredible dignity. Your body isn't a "shell" to be discarded; it is a temple that God plans to upgrade for eternity. This perspective changes how we handle aging, disability, and death. We aren't fading away; we are waiting for our "new clothes."
The New Heavens and New Earth: Home at Last
Finally, we come to the ultimate destination. After the Millennium and the Final Judgment, God performs His greatest act of "extreme makeover." He doesn't just fix the old earth; He creates a New Heaven and a New Earth.
Revelation 21 tells us that the "dwelling place of God is now among the people." The gap between heaven and earth is closed forever. This is the New Jerusalem, a city of light, gold, and precious stones, but more importantly, a city of presence.

Think about the most beautiful moment you've ever experienced in nature, a sunset over the Rockies, the smell of rain on a parched field, the stillness of a lake at dawn. On the New Earth, those moments aren't fleeting; they are the atmosphere. There will be no more "sea" (symbolizing separation), no more "night" (symbolizing fear or hiddenness), and absolutely no more "death, mourning, crying, or pain."
This is why we can endure the trials of 2026. This is why we can face the brokenness of our culture with a smile. We know how the story ends. We aren't just "holding on until the end"; we are moving toward a homecoming that will make the last 6,000 years of human history look like a bad night's sleep in a cheap motel.
The Eternal Perspective: Living for the "Then" in the "Now"
So, how does this "Future Study" change your Monday morning?
If you are a leader, it means your legacy isn't measured by your bank account or your social media following. Your legacy is measured by what survives the fire of God’s judgment. If you are a parent, parenting with biblical truth means you aren't just raising "successful" kids; you are raising eternal beings who will live in the New Jerusalem.
Living with an eternal perspective means:
We invest in people over things. People are the only "things" that go to the New Earth.
We handle suffering with hope. We know our "light and momentary troubles" are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all (2 Cor 4:17).
We speak with urgency. If the rapture is imminent, we don't have time to be timid about the Gospel.
The Final Charge: Go and Make Disciples
We have come full circle. In Chapter 1, we talked about the Great Commission, the command to go and make disciples of all nations. Here in Chapter 20, we see the reason for that commission. We are gathering a family for the New Earth.
Discipleship isn't a program; it’s a relay race. You have been discipled through these chapters so that you can turn around and disciple someone else. The flame of truth must be passed on.

As you finish this book, my prayer is that you wouldn't just be "smarter" about the Bible. I pray you would be "on fire" for the Mission. The world is desperate for leaders who know where they are going. They are looking for parents who aren't afraid of the future. They are looking for disciples of Jesus Christ who live with the joy of the New Jerusalem in their eyes.
Go. Teach. Baptize. Lead. And remember, He is with you always, even to the very end of the age.
📖 Chapter 20 Study Guide: The Disciple's Future
Personal Reflection Questions:
If you knew the rapture was happening in 24 hours, what is the first thing you would change about your current lifestyle?
How does the promise of a "physical resurrection" change the way you view physical illness or aging?
What "treasures" are you currently building on earth that will not survive the transition to the New Earth?
Group Discussion Points:
The Blessed Hope: Read 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 together. Why does Paul say we should "encourage one another with these words"? How does the rapture encourage a discouraged believer?
The Millennial Reign: Why do you think it is important for Jesus to rule on the earth for 1,000 years before the New Earth is created? What does this say about God's commitment to His creation?
The Great Commission: Looking back at this entire study, what is one practical step your group can take to begin "disciping others" in your community?
Scripture Meditation: "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." , Revelation 21:4
Prayer Activation: Lord, thank You for being the Alpha and the Omega. Thank You that my future is not left to chance, but is held in Your hands. Help me to live today with the 'Blessed Hope' in my heart. Give me the urgency to share Your love with those who don't yet know the hope of the New Earth. I commit my life, my family, and my leadership to Your eternal purposes. Maranatha, Come, Lord Jesus! Amen.
