Book: Miracle Mindset: Chapter 2: God as Your Source

Have you ever felt like you were running on empty, staring at a bank account, a health report, or a broken relationship, wondering how on earth you were going to make it to next Tuesday? We’ve all been there. We live in a world that demands we "hustle," "grind," and "secure the bag." We are told from a young age that if we want something, we have to go out and take it. We are taught that our security lies in our paycheck, our retirement fund, or our social standing.

But what happens when the paycheck stops? What happens when the "resource" dries up?

If your peace of mind is tied to a resource, your peace will vanish the moment that resource is threatened. But if your peace is tied to the Source, you can stand in the middle of a desert and know that breakfast is on its way. This is the core of the Miracle Mindset: understanding that God isn't just a "helper" in your time of need, He is the very Source of your life.

The Great Distinction: Source vs. Resource

Before we dive into the miraculous stories of Scripture, we have to clear up a major linguistic and spiritual confusion. Most of us spend our lives chasing resources while ignoring the Source.

A resource is a channel. It’s the pipe that brings the water to your house. It’s the job that brings the money to your account. It’s the doctor who brings the medicine to your body. Resources are wonderful, and we should be grateful for them, but resources are temporary. Pipes can break. Jobs can be lost. Doctors can reach the limit of their knowledge.

The Source, however, is the reservoir. God is the Source. He is the one who created the water, the one who gave you the breath to work the job, and the one who designed the very cells the doctor is trying to heal.

When we treat a resource like a source, we commit a form of modern-day idolatry. We begin to worship the job. We obsess over the bank balance. We panic when the person we’ve been leaning on lets us down. Why? Because we’ve mistaken the channel for the Creator.

The Miracle Mindset begins the moment you look past the empty pipe and look up at the Overflowing Fountain. As Philippians 4:19 reminds us: "And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." Notice it doesn't say "according to the current stock market" or "according to your boss’s mood." It says according to His riches.

The Manna Principle: Daily Dependence

Let’s go back to the wilderness. The Israelites had just been delivered from Egypt. They were free, but they were also in a desert. There were no grocery stores, no farms, and no visible way to feed millions of people. Naturally, they panicked. They looked at their surroundings (the lack of resources) and concluded they were going to die.

But God was about to give them a crash course in the Miracle Mindset.

Israelites gathering manna in the desert at dawn

In Exodus 16, God introduced "Manna." Every morning, a fine, flake-like substance appeared on the ground. It was "bread from heaven." But there was a catch: they could only gather enough for that day. If they tried to hoard it, if they tried to create their own "reserve" out of fear of tomorrow, it would rot and breed worms by the next morning.

This is the Manna Principle. God wanted to move them from a "slave mindset" (where they relied on Pharaoh’s rations) to a "Miracle Mindset" (where they relied on God’s daily presence).

Many of us are living with "rot" in our spirits because we are trying to hoard resources for a "rainy day" while ignoring the God who controls the rain. Daily dependence feels scary to the flesh, but it is the ultimate place of peace for the spirit. When you know God is your Source, you don’t need to see the bread for next month. You just need to know the Baker.

Are you stressing about six months from now? Stop. God is asking you to trust Him for the manna of today. He is faithful for this Tuesday, and when Wednesday comes, He will be the Source for that day, too.

The Widow of Zarephath: Giving from the Bottom of the Barrel

Sometimes, God asks us to do something that seems completely illogical to test whether we truly believe He is our Source.

In 1 Kings 17, we find the story of the widow of Zarephath. There was a severe drought in the land. Resources were non-existent. This woman was down to her last handful of flour and a little bit of oil. She was gathering sticks to bake one final meal for herself and her son so they could eat it and die.

Then enters the prophet Elijah. And he asks for something that sounds, frankly, selfish: "First make me a small loaf of bread and bring it to me; then make some for yourself and your son."

Why would God ask a starving widow to give her last meal to a stranger?

Because God was inviting her out of the world’s economy and into His. He was asking her, "Do you trust your eyes, which see an empty jar? Or do you trust My Word, which says the jar will not run dry?"

The widow made a choice. She shifted her focus from the limit of her flour to the limitlessness of her God. She gave. And the Bible tells us that "the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry."

This is the "Giving Principle" of the Miracle Mindset. In the world's economy, you keep what you have to stay safe. In God’s economy, you release what you have to stay connected to the Source. When you give in faith, especially when it hurts, you are making a declaration to the spiritual realm: "My job is not my provider. My savings account is not my security. God is my Source!"

The Widow’s Oil: Expanding Your Capacity

Another widow, another crisis. In 2 Kings 4, a woman comes to the prophet Elisha in a state of desperation. Her husband is dead, and his creditors are coming to take her two sons as slaves to pay off the debt.

Elisha asks her, "What do you have in your house?" She replies, "Nothing at all... except a small jar of olive oil."

Notice the language: "nothing... except." We do this all the time. I have nothing... except this small talent. I have nothing... except this tiny bit of hope. I have nothing... except this one contact.

But in the hands of the Source, "except" is more than enough.

Elisha tells her to go to all her neighbors and borrow as many empty jars as she can. He says, "Don't ask for just a few." Then, he tells her to go inside, shut the door, and start pouring her tiny bit of oil into the empty jars.

As she poured, the oil kept flowing. It didn't stop until she ran out of jars. The miracle wasn't limited by God’s supply; it was limited by her capacity to receive.

If you are struggling today, maybe the problem isn't God’s lack of provision. Maybe the problem is that you haven't brought enough "empty jars" to Him. Have you shut the door on the world’s noise and started pouring out what you do have in faith? God is a Source that fills every available space. If you want a bigger miracle, bring Him more of your emptiness.

God’s Economy vs. The World’s Economy

To live with a Miracle Mindset, you have to realize that you are a citizen of a different Kingdom. The "world’s economy" and "God’s economy" operate on completely different sets of laws.

The World’s Economy:

  • Scarcity: There is only so much to go around.

  • Competition: You have to beat others to get yours.

  • Anxiety: You are responsible for your own survival.

  • Hoarding: The more you keep, the safer you are.

God’s Economy:

  • Abundance: "The earth is the Lord's and everything in it" (Psalm 24:1).

  • Collaboration: We are blessed to be a blessing.

  • Peace: "Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7).

  • Generosity: "Give and it will be given to you" (Luke 6:38).

In the world, a recession is a disaster. In God’s Kingdom, a recession is just an opportunity for God to show off. Isaac sowed in a year of famine and reaped a hundredfold (Genesis 26:12). Why? Because his harvest wasn't dependent on the soil of the earth; it was dependent on the favor of the Source.

When you stop looking at the news and start looking at the Word, your stress levels will plummet. The news tells you what "resources" are failing. The Word tells you that the "Source" is unfailing.

Practical Steps to Shift Your Mindset

You might be thinking, "That sounds great, Layne, but I still have bills to pay on Monday." I hear you. The Miracle Mindset isn't about ignoring reality; it’s about acknowledging a Higher Reality. Here is how you practically make God your Source:

1. Re-Label Your Resources Start identifying the things in your life correctly. Your paycheck is a resource. Your boss is a resource. Your doctor is a resource. When you get a raise, thank God for the resource, but don't worship it. When a resource dries up, don't panic. Say, "Lord, that pipe stopped working. I thank You for it while it lasted, but I know You have a thousand other pipes."

2. Seek the Kingdom First Matthew 6:33 is the ultimate "provision hack." "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." When you make God’s business your priority, He makes your business His priority. Are you more concerned about your bank balance than you are about your spiritual growth? Flip the script.

3. Practice "Pre-emptive" Gratitude Don't wait for the miracle to happen before you thank God. Thank Him for being the Source before the provision arrives. Gratitude is the language of faith. It tells your brain and the spiritual world that you are already convinced of God’s character.

4. Check Your Circle If you surround yourself with people who only talk about "lack," "inflation," and "hard times," you will catch their poverty of spirit. Find some "Joshua and Caleb" friends who talk about the giants in the land but also talk about the grapes and the God who gives them.

Standing Firm in the Storm

Living with God as your source doesn't mean you won't face storms. It means the storm won't be able to shake you because your foundation isn't built on sand (resources), but on the Rock (the Source).

When you truly believe God is your Source, you gain a supernatural "quiet courage." You can lose a job and say, "Okay, God, I can't wait to see what New Channel You’re opening." You can face a health crisis and say, "My body is a resource, but God is the Source of my life. He’s got this."

This peace is the greatest miracle of all. It’s a peace that "transcends all understanding." The world can't understand how you can be so calm when the "economy" is shaking. They don't realize you aren't standing on the economy. You are standing on the Eternal.

Declarations of Provision

Your words have power. As you close this chapter, I want you to speak these truths over your life. Don't just read them: declare them.

  • I declare that God is my Source. My job is a resource, but God is my Provider.

  • I declare that I live in the economy of Heaven, where there is more than enough.

  • I declare that I will not be moved by what I see with my eyes, but I will be moved by what God has said in His Word.

  • I declare that as I seek first the Kingdom, all my needs are being met according to His riches in glory.

  • I declare that I am a conduit of blessing, and as I give, it shall be given back to me in good measure, pressed down, and running over.

Final Thoughts: The Choice is Yours

At the end of the day, you have to decide where you’re going to look. You can look at the "sticks" you’re gathering for your last meal, or you can look at the Prophet of God telling you that your jar will never run dry.

The Miracle Mindset isn't for the "lucky" or the "super-spiritual." It’s for anyone who is tired of the exhausting grind of self-sufficiency. It’s for the person who is ready to say, "God, I give up my control and I embrace Your provision."

Trust Him. Not because it’s easy, but because He is faithful. The same God who fed the Israelites, sustained the widow, and multiplied the loaves and fish is looking at your situation right now. He isn't worried. He isn't stressed. And if He’s your Source, you don't have to be either.
