Book: Raising Giants – Study Guide: Chapter 13

“But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.” , 1 Peter 3:15 (ESV)

The world our children are walking into isn't the same one we grew up in. We are no longer living in a "Christian-adjacent" culture where biblical values are the default setting. We have moved into a post-Christian era, a "digital Babylon" where the walls of traditional faith are being dismantled daily.

If we want our kids to do more than just survive this environment, if we want them to thrive and lead others to Jesus, they need more than a "vague feeling" about God. They need Resilient Faith. This study guide is designed to help you, the parent or mentor, move from defensive parenting to offensive discipleship. It’s time to equip our "giants-in-training" with the armor of truth.

The Mandate: Always Ready

In Chapter 13, we explored the apostolic command found in 1 Peter 3:15. This isn’t just a verse for theologians or professional debaters; it is a lifestyle mandate for every believer, especially the next generation.

Key Discussion Questions for the Family:

  1. The Priority: What does it mean to "honor Christ the Lord as holy" before we start talking to others about Him?

  2. The Defense: The word "defense" comes from the Greek word apologia. It doesn't mean "saying sorry." It means giving a reasoned explanation. Why is it important to have "reasons" for what we believe, rather than just "feelings"?

  3. The Posture: Why does Peter emphasize doing this with "gentleness and respect"? How does being rude or argumentative actually hurt the message of the Gospel?

Building the Shield: Apologetics for Kids

Apologetics isn't about winning arguments; it’s about removing the intellectual and spiritual roadblocks that keep people from seeing Jesus. For a child, resilient faith is built on three pillars: Truth, Evidence, and Experience.

In a post-Christian world, your kids will be told that truth is "subjective" (what's true for you isn't true for me). We must teach them that God's Word is the objective anchor.

Practical Step: The "Reason for Hope" Journal

Ask your children to write down three reasons why they believe Jesus is who He says He is.

  • Is it because of a prayer God answered?

  • Is it because of the beauty of creation?

  • Is it because of the historical evidence of the empty tomb? Help them articulate these "becauses." A faith that cannot be articulated is a faith that can be easily intimidated.

The "Tough Questions" Drill: Handling Doubts

Doubts are not the enemy of faith; silence is. If our children don't feel safe asking hard questions at the dinner table, they will find "answers" on TikTok or from secular professors who don't share our values.

Practice Scenario: Role-play with your kids. Sit across from them and pretend to be a friend at school who says: "How can you believe in a God you can't see? Science has proven that the Bible is just a bunch of myths."

How to Guide Them:

  1. Don't Panic: Show them that hard questions don't scare you.

  2. Validate the Question: "That's a really great question. A lot of smart people ask that."

  3. Point to the Evidence: "Actually, science and the Bible work together. Science studies how God made the world. For example, the complexity of our DNA looks like it was designed by a genius, doesn't it?"

  4. Admit What You Don't Know: "I don't have the full answer to that right now, but let's look it up together in a trusted book tonight."

Faith Foundations: The Family Quiz

Use this quiz to check the "structural integrity" of your family’s faith foundation. This isn't a test for a grade; it's a conversation starter.

Faith Foundations Family Quiz Graphic. A beautiful, original Christian resource graphic. A stylized list of 5 questions with checkboxes. 1. Who is the ultimate authority? 2. Is Jesus a myth or a Man? 3. Why did Jesus have to die? 4. What makes the Bible different? 5. How do we live for Him? The design is warm, inviting, and professional. Family Quiz Guide:

  • Question 1 (Authority): If God is the Creator, does He have the right to tell us how to live? (Genesis 1:1, Colossians 1:16-17)

  • Question 2 (The Christ): Did Jesus actually exist in history? (Yes, even secular historians agree on this! Discuss the evidence for the Resurrection.)

  • Question 3 (The Cross): Why couldn't God just "ignore" our sins? (Discuss God's holiness and justice.)

  • Question 4 (The Word): Is the Bible like a Harry Potter book, or is it a historical record? (Discuss eyewitness accounts and archaeological finds.)

  • Question 5 (The Mission): Now that we know the truth, what is our job in the world? (The Great Commission.)

Preparing for the "Post-Christian" Wind

The goal of Chapter 13 is to ensure that when the winds of culture blow, and they will blow, our children’s house is built on the Rock. A resilient faith is one that has been tested in the safety of the home before it is tested in the hostility of the world.

As you close this study session, pray with your children. Ask the Holy Spirit to give them "boldness like lions and gentleness like doves." Remind them that they aren't just "kids", they are ambassadors of the Kingdom of God.

The Zinger: If your child was asked tomorrow why they follow Jesus, and they weren't allowed to say "because my parents told me to," what would their answer be?
