"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." : Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)
The Battle for the Digital Heart
In Chapter 9 of Raising Giants, we transitioned from the internal discipline of the home into the external battlefield of culture. Specifically, we addressed the "Goliath" that stands at the gateway of our children's minds every single day: the digital world.
This isn't just about screen time or social media apps; it is about the spirit of the age. We are raising children in a world where the dominant narrative is often "live your truth," "follow your heart," and "be your own god." These cultural giants are loud, pervasive, and highly sophisticated. But as we learned in the chapter, David didn't defeat Goliath because he was the strongest warrior in Israel; he defeated him because he was the most discerning and dependent worshiper.
To raise a giant in today’s culture, we must move beyond being "digital police" and become "spiritual mentors." This study guide is designed to help you and your family internalize the lessons of Chapter 9, moving from theory to a practical, biblically grounded defense of the heart.
Part 1: The Parent’s Heart Check
Before we can lead our children through the digital valley, we must examine our own footsteps.

Reflection Questions for Parents:
The Mirror of Habits: If your child imitated your media habits, screen time, and digital speech for one week, would they become more like Christ or more like the world?
Parenting from Peace or Panic?: When you see the negative influence of culture, is your first reaction fear and prohibition, or prayer and discipleship? Does your home atmosphere feel like a sanctuary or a bunker?
The Idol of Convenience: Where have you allowed technology to serve as a "babysitter" or an "escape" rather than a tool? Are there moments where the "Altar" (prayer and presence) is being sacrificed for the "Algorithm"?
Modeling Repentance: When was the last time your child heard you confess a digital sin (such as pride, anger in a comment section, or mindless scrolling) and ask for forgiveness?
Action Step: Choose one area of your own digital life to "fast" from or reorder this week. Show your children that you are also a student of the Holy Spirit in this area.
Part 2: Family Discussion – Confronting the Giants Together
Use these questions to spark conversation at the dinner table or during a family walk. Adapt them based on your child's age.

For Younger Children (Ages 5–10):
The Light in the Room: If Jesus were sitting right next to you while you watched your favorite show or played your game, would you feel happy or a little bit embarrassed? Why?
The Happy Heart: How do you feel in your heart after you’ve been on a screen for a long time? Do you feel more kind and peaceful, or do you feel a little grumpy or tired?
The Truth Shield: God says we are His special creation. Sometimes the world says we need to look a certain way or have certain toys to be happy. Which one is the truth?
For Older Children & Teens (Ages 11–18):
The Influencer Effect: Who are the top three voices you listen to online? What do they believe about God, truth, and what it means to be a "successful" person?
The "Live Your Truth" Lie: You hear the phrase "live your truth" everywhere. How does that clash with Jesus saying, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life"? If everyone has their own truth, who is actually in charge?
Digital Integrity: Is your "digital self" (the version of you online) the same as your "real self" (the version of you that follows Jesus at home)? If there is a gap, what is causing it?
The Call to Courage: Where do you feel the most pressure to stay silent about your faith online? What would it look like to be a "light" in that specific digital space?
Part 3: The Digital Discernment Framework
In Chapter 9, we introduced the "Heart Guard Filter." Use this framework before consuming any new media (movies, games, apps, or music).
Scripture: Does this content celebrate what God calls good (Philippians 4:8), or does it make sin look normal, funny, or heroic?
Truth: What is the "hidden message" here? What is it trying to tell me about my identity, my worth, or my purpose?
Spirit-Led Peace: Do I have the "green light" of the Holy Spirit in my conscience, or do I feel a sense of "check" or unrest?
Holy Action: Will consuming this move me closer to Jesus, or will it dull my hunger for Him?
Family Exercise: Pick a popular movie or song this week and "deconstruct" it together using these four steps. Help your children learn how to think, not just what to think.
Part 4: Prayer & Declarations
Power in the digital age comes through prayer. Pray these together as a family.

A Parent’s Prayer for Discernment: "Lord, I surrender my children’s hearts to You. I cannot police every screen or hear every whisper of the culture, but You are the Great Shepherd. Give my children a 'holy dissatisfaction' with anything that isn't of You. Help them recognize lies quickly and love Truth deeply. Make me a parent who leads with wisdom and grace, not fear and control. In Jesus' name, Amen."
A Child’s Declaration of Identity: "I am a child of God. I was created for a purpose. My heart belongs to Jesus, and I will guard it with His strength. I will not follow the crowd; I will follow the King. My words and my digital life will reflect His light. I am a giant-slayer in the name of Jesus!"
Final Thought: The Altar is Stronger than the Screen
Raising giants requires us to believe that the power of the Holy Spirit in our homes is greater than the power of the algorithm in the world. When we prioritize the Altar: the place of worship, Scripture, and presence: we build a foundation that no cultural storm can wash away.
As you go through this week, remember that you are not just managing behavior; you are discipling a heart. You are raising a David. You are raising a giant.
Can you name one "cultural giant" that has been trying to take ground in your home lately, and what biblical truth will you use to face it this week?
