Book: The Way of the Word: Study Guide: Chapter 65: Jude: Contending for the Faith

Welcome to this deep-dive study guide for The Way of the Word: Chapter 65, focusing on the short but explosive Epistle of Jude. In a world of shifting sand and cultural compromise, Jude provides the bedrock we need to stand firm. This guide is designed to help you, your family, or your small group navigate the complexities of modern faith while remaining anchored in the eternal truth of Jesus Christ.

The Mission of This Study

The purpose of The Way of the Word series is to walk through the entirety of Scripture, uncovering the redemptive thread that binds the Old and New Testaments together. In this chapter, we encounter the urgent, fiery, and deeply pastoral heart of Jude, the brother of James and half-brother of Jesus. Jude’s message is a clarion call for every believer to become a guardian of the Gospel.

Chapter Summary: The Call to Guard the Gates

Jude originally intended to write a pleasant letter about "the salvation we share." However, the Holy Spirit prompted a change of plans. Jude looked at the state of the early church and saw a dangerous infection: false teachers had "crept in unnoticed." These were not outside attackers but internal influencers who were perverting the grace of God into a license for immorality and denying the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

The core of this chapter is Jude 3: “Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.”

Jude’s summary focus is two-fold:

  1. Vigilance against Apostasy: Recognizing that the greatest threat to the Church often comes from within: from those who slowly drift away from biblical truth while maintaining a form of godliness.

  2. Earnest Contending: Not a call to be argumentative, but a call to be firm, courageous, and clear about the objective truth of the Gospel.

Deep Dive: Understanding the Epistle of Jude

To truly grasp Chapter 65, we must understand the environment in which Jude wrote. The early church was facing "Gnosticism" and other early forms of legalism and license. Today, we face similar challenges: secular humanism, moral relativism, and the "hyper-grace" distortions that Jude warns against.

1. The Anatomy of Apostasy (Jude 4–16)

Jude describes apostates as "hidden reefs" and "clouds without water." These metaphors are powerful. A reef is dangerous because it is beneath the surface. It doesn't look like a threat until the ship is already sinking. Apostasy rarely happens overnight; it is a slow "creeping in" of ideas that prioritize human comfort over divine command.

Jude reminds us that God has judged apostasy in the past:

  • The Unbelieving Israelites: Even after being delivered from Egypt, those who did not believe were destroyed.

  • The Rebellious Angels: Those who left their proper dwelling are kept in eternal chains.

  • Sodom and Gomorrah: A warning of the judgment that follows moral perversion.

The takeaway for us is clear: God takes the purity of His Word and the holiness of His people seriously. We cannot "update" the Gospel to fit the culture without losing the Gospel entirely.

2. The Faith Once for All Delivered

When Jude speaks of "the faith," he isn't talking about our personal feelings or subjective experiences. He is talking about the objective body of truth revealed in Scripture. This faith was "once for all delivered." It is complete. It doesn't need a "Version 2.0." Our job is not to reinvent the truth, but to remain faithful to it.

3. The Believer’s Defensive Posture (Jude 17–23)

How do we respond to a world that seems to be drifting away? Jude gives us a five-fold strategy:

  • Remember the Word: Don't be surprised by scoffers; the Apostles told us they would come.

  • Build Yourself Up: Immerse yourself in sound doctrine.

  • Pray in the Holy Spirit: Lean on the Spirit’s power, not your own intellect.

  • Keep Yourself in God’s Love: Stay in the posture of obedience and fellowship.

  • Wait for Mercy: Keep your eyes on the eternal prize: the return of Jesus.

3 Key Lessons for Today

Lesson 1: Doctrinal Vigilance is an Act of Love

We often think that "contending" for the faith is harsh or unloving. However, Jude shows us that guarding the truth is the most loving thing we can do. If a doctor knows a medicine is tainted, the most loving thing he can do is stop the patient from taking it. Similarly, when we protect the Gospel from being distorted, we are protecting the only message that has the power to save souls. Encouragement in the faith requires us to be honest about the dangers of false teaching.

Lesson 2: Grace is Not a License, But a Power

Jude warns against those who "pervert the grace of our God into sensuality." This is a crucial lesson for the modern believer. Biblical grace is not a "get out of jail free" card that allows us to live however we want. True grace is the power of God that enables us to live holy lives. When we understand the Lordship of Christ, we realize that His grace transforms our desires rather than endorsing our dysfunctions.

Lesson 3: Mercy with Discernment

Jude 22-23 says, "And have mercy on those who doubt; save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh." This is a beautiful, nuanced lesson on evangelism and restoration. We are called to be compassionate toward those who are struggling with doubt, but we must be careful not to get pulled into the same fire. We love the person while hating the sin that destroys them.

3 Reflection Questions for Small Groups

  1. The "Creeping In" Reality: Jude mentions that false teachers "crept in unnoticed." In what ways do we see subtle, unbiblical ideas creeping into our own lives or our modern church culture? How can we stay alert without becoming cynical?

  2. The Content of Our Contending: What does it look like to "contend for the faith" in your daily life? How can you stand for truth in your workplace or family in a way that is "full of grace and truth" (John 1:14)?

  3. Snatching from the Fire: Think of someone you know who is wavering in their faith or being led astray by false ideas. How can you practically apply Jude’s instruction to "show mercy" while maintaining a "hatred for the sin" involved? What does "snatching them out of the fire" look like in a conversation?

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the "faith once for all delivered to the saints." We thank You for the courage of Jude, who spoke the truth in love even when it was difficult. Lord, give us discerning hearts. Help us to recognize the "hidden reefs" in our culture and in our own hearts. Build us up in our most holy faith and teach us to pray in the power of Your Holy Spirit. May we keep ourselves in Your love, waiting with hope for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ. Enable us to be rescuers: snatching others from the fire with a heart of mercy and a commitment to Your holiness. To Him who is able to keep us from falling and to present us before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy: to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power, and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.
