Book: United in Faith: Introduction: Embracing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

United in Faith: Embracing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Church Back Cover

Project Mission

The mission of United in Faith: Embracing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Church is to provide a biblically grounded, emotionally intelligent roadmap for the modern Church to navigate the complexities of unity in a divided world. This project isn't just a response to cultural trends; it is a deep dive into the heart of God’s redemptive plan for humanity. Our goal is to equip believers, leaders, and families with the tools they need to foster true reconciliation, celebrate the beautiful tapestry of the Body of Christ, and lead with a heart of grace. We believe that when the Church is truly unified: not through uniformity, but through Christ-centered diversity: it becomes the most powerful witness of the Gospel to a watching world.

Dedication

This book is dedicated to the peacemakers. To those who have sat on the park benches of life, weighted down by the pain of division, yet choosing to believe that healing is possible. To the families, like the Johnsons, who are navigating the messy path of reconciliation, and to every church leader striving to build a house where every tribe, tongue, and nation feels not just welcomed, but home. May this work serve as a lamp to your feet as we walk toward the unity Christ prayed for.

Author’s Notes

Writing United in Faith (the UNIFIED project) has been one of the most challenging and rewarding journeys of my ministry. We live in a time where the words "diversity," "equity," and "inclusion" are often charged with political tension. However, as followers of Jesus, we must reclaim these concepts through the lens of Scripture. Diversity was God’s idea at Pentecost; Equity is reflected in the impartial love of the Father; and Inclusion is the very essence of the Great Commission.

In these pages, you will find a blend of theological teaching, practical discipleship resources, and the ongoing story of the Johnson family: a narrative tool I’ve used to ground these high-level concepts in the gritty reality of human relationships. My prayer is that this book doesn’t just fill your head with knowledge but transforms your heart with the radical grace of Jesus Christ.

Epilogue (Looking Toward the Horizon)

As you begin this journey, remember that unity is not a destination we reach through our own effort, but a gift we receive through the Holy Spirit. The path ahead requires humility, the courage to face our own biases, and a relentless commitment to forgiveness. But on the other side of that struggle is a Church that looks like Heaven: a vibrant, diverse, and healed community that reflects the breathtaking masterpiece of God's grace. Let’s begin this journey: together.

Embracing the Heart of Unity: A Deep Dive into UNIFIED

Every heart carries a story: one of wounds and triumphs, regrets and redemption. But within every scar lies a deeper truth: God's grace isn't just a bandage; it's a healer. His forgiveness isn't just a reset; it's a rebirth. His love isn't conditional; it's eternal.

As I sat on a park bench recently, watching the sun dip below the horizon, I found myself wrestling with the weight of our current cultural moment. We are more connected than ever through technology, yet we feel more divided than ever in our spirit. The weight of anger, resentment, and the feeling of being "othered" is crushing many within the walls of our own churches. It was in that moment of desperation that I began to understand the vital importance of this project. Unity is not a "nice-to-have" option for the Church; it is our survival and our primary witness.

The Theological Foundation: Assemblies of God Perspectives on Unity

In our tradition, we believe that the baptism of the Holy Spirit is meant to empower us for witness. But what is that witness if it doesn't include the ability to love those who are different from us? Assemblies of God theology emphasizes the "blessed hope" and the mission of the Church to reach every soul. If our churches do not reflect the diversity of the communities they serve, we must ask ourselves if we are truly following the Spirit’s lead.

Scripture tells us in Psalm 133:1, "How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!" But this unity doesn't happen by accident. It requires an intentional focus on "Embracing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion": not as secular mandates, but as biblical imperatives. When we look at the early church in the Book of Acts, we see a community that broke through ethnic, social, and economic barriers to become "one heart and one soul."

The Journey Begins: Acknowledging the Wound

You cannot heal what you do not first acknowledge. In the first few chapters of this book, we will explore the "Journey to Biblical Unity" (as seen in the infographic above). It begins with acknowledging the wounds: the historical and personal pains that have created walls between us.

Consider the Johnson family, whose story we weave throughout this book. They are a family grappling with the aftermath of a tragic accident that has left deep emotional wounds. The accident wasn't just a physical event; it was a catalyst that exposed the underlying fractures in their communication, their assumptions about one another, and their individual ways of processing grief. In many ways, the Johnson family is a mirror for the Church. We are a family, yet we are often "grappling with the aftermath" of cultural collisions and historical hurts that we haven't fully processed.

The Power of Forgiveness and Reconciliation

At the core of the UNIFIED mission is the belief that Christian discipleship resources must prioritize the ministry of reconciliation. As 2 Corinthians 5:18 reminds us, God "reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation."

Forgiveness is the fuel for this journey. It isn't about excusing harmful actions; it's about releasing the debt so that we can move forward. Throughout this book, we will explore:

  1. The difference between forgiveness and reconciliation: You can forgive someone in your heart, but reconciliation requires two people walking toward each other in truth and humility.

  2. The role of empathy: Understanding the story behind the person sitting next to you in the pew.

  3. The practical application of grace: How do we handle disagreements over "non-essential" issues while maintaining the "unity of the Spirit"?

Why Diversity Matters for Discipleship

Why focus on diversity and inclusion? Because a church that only looks like itself is a church that is at risk of creating a God in its own image. Diversity challenges us. It stretches our empathy. It forces us to realize that our way of seeing the world is not the only way.

When we embrace diversity, we are not just "being nice." We are engaging in a spiritual discipline that prepares us for eternity. In Heaven, there is no "majority culture." There is only the culture of the Kingdom. By practicing inclusion now, we are practicing for our eternal home.

Practical Steps for Your Journey

As you dive into the chapters of United in Faith, I want you to be ready to do more than just read. This is a manual for action. Here are a few "Practical Applications" we will be covering in depth:

  • The Listening Audit: How to listen to the stories of those whose life experiences are vastly different from your own without becoming defensive.

  • The Table Test: Who is missing from your table? Whether it's your dinner table or your leadership table, inclusion starts with an invitation.

  • The Prayer of Lament: Learning how to mourn with those who mourn, even when you don't fully understand their pain.

Moving Forward Together

The sun might be setting on a season of division, but a new day is dawning for the Church. We are standing at a crossroads. We can choose to retreat into our comfortable silos, or we can choose to be the "breathtaking masterpiece" that God intended: a people united by faith, defined by grace, and known by our love for one another.

Your story isn't over. The Church's story isn't over. It’s just beginning. In God’s hands, every broken piece of our history and our current struggles can become something beautiful.

Let’s take a breath. Let go of the weight of resentment. And let’s begin this journey: together.
