Does the person people see on the stage or in the boardroom match the person who sits alone in the quiet of the morning?
Real leadership isn't a performance; it’s an overflow of a well-tended soul, where your private character serves as the anchor for every public decision you make.

How to Build Private Integrity That Can Carry Public Responsibility
In the fast-paced world of marketplace leadership, there is a constant temptation to build a "brand" rather than a "being." We spend thousands on executive coaching, public speaking training, and social media strategy, yet we often neglect the one thing that actually sustains a long-term career: integrity.
And that matters because leadership pressure has a way of exposing whatever is happening beneath the surface. If your soul is neglected, your leadership will eventually feel the strain.
Integrity isn't just about not lying; it’s about integration. It’s when your private values, your spiritual life, and your public actions are all moving in the same direction. When there is a gap between who you appear to be and who you actually are, you create a "character debt." Eventually, that debt comes due, often resulting in burnout, broken relationships, or a collapse of trust within your organization.

How Integrity Strengthens Trust, Culture, and Long-Term Leadership
You might think of integrity as a "soft" skill, but the data tells a different story. Research shows that CEOs who receive high character ratings from their employees achieve an average Return on Assets (ROA) of 9.35% over a two-year period. In contrast, those with low character ratings see an average ROA of only 1.93% (Source: KRW International).
That is nearly a five-fold difference in financial performance. When you lead with integrity, you aren't just doing the "right thing", you are building a high-trust culture where people feel safe to innovate, work harder, and stay loyal. Trust is the lubricant of business; without it, every transaction becomes slower and more expensive.
And beneath the numbers is something even deeper: people can feel when a leader is whole. They can feel when your words are anchored, when your motives are clean, and when your strength is not just polished on the outside. Integrity gives people room to breathe. It makes your presence safer. It turns leadership from pressure into stewardship.
How to Strengthen the Inner Life That Shapes Every Leadership Decision
At Layne McDonald Ministries, we believe that leadership is a sacred calling. To help you stay on track, I like to use the L-E-A-D framework for private character:
This is not about becoming impressive. It is about becoming whole before God so the people you lead are served by someone honest, steady, and grounded.
Love: Do you actually care about the people you lead, or are they just tools to reach a KPI? Leading with heart means seeing the humanity in your team first.
Excellence: This isn't about perfection; it’s about giving your best when no one is watching. It’s the quality of your work in the dark that defines your shine in the light.
Authenticity: Can you admit when you’re wrong? As I often say, "I was wrong" is one of the most powerful phrases a leader can own. It builds psychological safety.
Discipline: Private character is built in the daily habits of prayer, reflection, and ethical boundary-setting.

How to Lead with Strength That Still Feels Safe to People
Leading with heart is about more than just being "nice." It’s about being emotionally intelligent and spiritually grounded. It’s the ability to hold a high standard for performance while simultaneously holding a high standard for human dignity.
When you lead with heart, you recognize that your team members are carrying more than just their job descriptions. They are carrying anxieties, family struggles, and dreams. A leader with a strong private character has the capacity to carry their own weight so they can help lift others.
And before you are a leader, executive, or decision-maker, you are a Beloved Child of God. That identity matters in the private sphere most of all. It means your worth is not built by applause, titles, or outcomes. It means you do not have to become harsh to become effective. In the quiet places of your life, where nobody is clapping and nobody is watching, God still sees you, loves you, and calls you to live whole.
If you forget that, leadership can quietly turn into performance. But when you remember who you are before God, you can lead from peace instead of pressure.
As the Scripture reminds us in Proverbs 10:9, "Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out." Security in leadership doesn't come from a big bank account or a fancy title; it comes from knowing that your foundation is solid.
How to Make the Inner Shift That Changes Your Leadership
If you want to upgrade your leadership, stop looking at your external metrics and start looking at your internal ones. When you prioritize your private walk with the Lord and your commitment to ethical consistency, your public influence will naturally expand. People don't follow titles; they follow character. They don't trust strategies; they trust people. Your greatest competitive advantage in a world of "spin" is simply being the same person everywhere you go.
Take the Next Step in Becoming the Same Person Everywhere
To go deeper into these principles, I’d love to invite you to spend time with my book, "Saving Corporate America." In it, I unpack the deep need for heart-centered leadership and how we can help redeem the workplace by bringing our full, faith-filled selves to the table.
