Finding God in the Ordinary: A Weekend Reflection

You know what hit me this morning while I was making coffee? I almost missed it. That golden stream of sunlight coming through the kitchen window, the smell of fresh grounds, the quiet before the day explodes into action. And I realized, God was right there in that moment. Not in some spectacular vision or angelic visitation. Just there. Present. Waiting for me to notice.

Most of us have been trained to look for God in the big moments. The answered prayers that blow our minds. The healing that defies explanation. The breakthrough that changes everything. And yes, God shows up powerfully in those times. But what if I told you that He's speaking just as clearly in the routine moments we rush through without a second thought?

We're Looking in the Wrong Places

Here's the thing: we've gotten really good at missing the sacred in the everyday. We scroll through our phones at the dinner table. We hurry through our morning routines like they're obstacles to overcome. We treat our regular responsibilities as interruptions instead of opportunities.

Meanwhile, God is moving in the breakfast conversation with your kid. He's present in the commute to work. He's speaking through the person who needs help in the grocery store parking lot. We're just too distracted to notice.

Mind Full vs. Mindful

The Bible is packed with examples of God showing up in the most ordinary circumstances. David wasn't anointed king during a royal ceremony: he was out in the fields taking care of sheep. Jesus wasn't born in a palace: He entered the world in a stable, announced to regular working people watching their flocks at night.

Moses met God at a bush while doing his daily work. Gideon was threshing wheat when God called him a mighty warrior. Mary was going about her normal routine when an angel appeared with news that would change the world.

God specializes in the ordinary. He doesn't need spectacular settings to reveal Himself. He chooses the mundane, the routine, the everyday: because that's where we actually live most of our lives.

The Art of Showing Up

So how do we start recognizing God in our regular days? It begins with presence. And I'm not talking about some mystical meditation technique. I'm talking about simply being where you are, fully engaged with what's in front of you.

When you sit down with your morning coffee, actually sit. Don't scroll. Don't plan your entire day. Just be there. Notice the warmth of the cup. Taste the coffee. Thank God for this moment of peace before the chaos starts.

When you're driving, turn off the podcast for a few minutes. Look at the sky. Notice the trees. Talk to God about what's on your heart. Some of my most powerful prayer times happen in my car on the way to meetings.

When you're doing dishes or folding laundry: tasks we usually zone out during: invite God into that space. Talk to Him about your day. Ask Him to show you what He's doing. Listen for His voice in the quiet. You'd be amazed at how often God speaks during the most mundane activities.

This is what Brother Lawrence called "practicing the presence of God." It's inviting Him into every moment, not just the designated prayer times. It's recognizing that washing dishes can be an act of worship when done with awareness of God's presence.

Gratitude Changes Everything

Want to know the fastest way to start seeing God in the ordinary? Start thanking Him for the small stuff. I'm talking about the things so common we forget they're gifts.

Thank God for your breath. For sunlight. For the ability to walk. For clean water. For food. For the bed you slept in last night. For your health. For your family, flawed as we all are. For your job, even on the hard days.

Gratitude & Faith

When you cultivate a heart of gratitude for the small, everyday blessings, something shifts. You start recognizing God's constant activity in your life. You begin to see His kindness woven through every single day. Those "ordinary" moments suddenly become evidence of His faithfulness.

I keep a running list on my phone of things I'm grateful for. Some days it's big stuff. Most days it's simple things like "the sun came up" or "my car started" or "I had a good conversation with a stranger." But that practice has trained me to look for God's goodness everywhere.

The Power of Consistent, Ordinary Faith

Here's something that took me years to understand: spiritual roots grow during ordinary days, not during emotional highs. The faith that endures isn't built in weekend conferences or revival services: as good as those can be. It's built in the daily, consistent practice of showing up.

Reading Scripture even when nothing jumps off the page. Praying through your day when God feels distant. Choosing obedience in small things when no one's watching. Trusting God's character when your circumstances don't make sense.

This is where real transformation happens. Not in the mountain-top experiences we chase, but in the valleys and plains where we spend most of our time. This is where faith becomes muscle memory instead of emotional reaction.

The ordinary days are where we prove what we really believe. They're where our theology becomes practical. They're where our relationship with God deepens from knowing about Him to actually knowing Him.

Your Invitation Forward

So here's my challenge for you this weekend: stop waiting for spectacular moments. Release the pressure to make everything exceptional. Look around at your regular, routine, beautifully ordinary life and ask God to open your eyes.

He's already there. In your morning routine. In your conversations. In your work. In your rest. In the laughter of your kids. In the sunset you almost missed. In the kindness of a stranger. In the beauty of creation you walk past every day.

God doesn't need to perform miracles to prove He's real: though He certainly does. He reveals Himself just as powerfully in the consistent, faithful, ordinary rhythms of life. You just have to slow down enough to notice.

The extraordinary God you serve has been present all along, waiting for you to discover Him in the comfortable routine of your days. What if this weekend, you actually found Him there?
