Health: Cyclospora Outbreak Sickens Over 1,700 Across Multiple States : Michigan Epicenter

By Dr. Layne McDonald

What Happened: The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) recently confirmed that the state is facing its largest cyclosporiasis outbreak in history. As of July 2026, Michigan alone accounts for over 70% of the nationwide cases, with 1,251 people reported ill and at least 44 hospitalizations. The CDC has logged additional cases in 28 other states, including significant clusters in Ohio, bringing the estimated national total to more than 1,700.

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic parasite that, when ingested via contaminated food or water, causes an intestinal infection known as cyclosporiasis. The hallmark of this illness is prolonged, often "explosive" watery diarrhea, accompanied by loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue. If left untreated, symptoms can last from a few days to a month or longer.

Public health investigators are currently working in "sprint mode" to trace the origin of the parasite. In previous years, similar outbreaks in the U.S. have been linked to imported fresh items such as raspberries, basil, cilantro, snow peas, and various bagged salad mixes. However, at this stage of the investigation, Michigan’s chief medical executive has noted that no specific fruit, vegetable, or retailer has been definitively linked to the current surge.

Centered on the Cross: In times of public health concern, it is easy to let fear take the driver's seat. We see headlines about "explosive" illnesses and "record-breaking" outbreaks, and our natural response is to retreat into a state of panic. However, as followers of Christ, we are called to a different standard: one of wisdom, peace, and grounded faith.

Proverbs 27:12 tells us, "The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty." Taking practical steps: like washing our food and staying informed: is not an act of fear; it is an act of stewardship over the bodies God has given us. We can be wise without being worried.

We also find rest in the knowledge that God is our ultimate Healer. As we pray for the 1,700 people currently suffering from this illness, we ask for physical restoration and for the wisdom of the scientists working to stop the spread. In the midst of the "noise" of the news cycle, we can choose to breathe and find peace knowing that our lives are in His hands.
