Health: Tick-Linked Meat Allergy May Affect More People Than Thought, CDC Study Finds

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released new data from a comprehensive seroprevalence study conducted between late 2024 and early 2025, suggesting that a mysterious meat allergy linked to tick bites is far more prevalent than previously understood. By analyzing residual blood samples from 3,000 donors across 10 U.S. states, researchers found that alpha-gal IgE antibodies: the markers for alpha-gal syndrome (AGS): are present in a staggering number of Americans, particularly in the South and Midwest.
In high-risk regions where the lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) is prevalent, the numbers were eye-opening. In five specific states: Arkansas, Missouri, Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee: an estimated 24% of adults tested positive for these antibodies. Arkansas recorded the highest prevalence at 31.2%, meaning nearly one in three residents in that state may have been sensitized to the alpha-gal molecule.
Alpha-gal syndrome is a unique allergic condition. Unlike most food allergies that trigger an immediate reaction, AGS causes a delayed response: usually three to six hours after consuming red meat (beef, pork, lamb), dairy, or gelatin. This delay often makes it difficult for patients and doctors to connect the symptoms, which can range from mild hives and stomach pain to life-threatening anaphylaxis, to the meal consumed hours earlier.
The study highlighted a clear geographic and demographic divide. While the South and Central U.S. saw high rates of sensitization, states like Washington and New Mexico, where the lone star tick is not established, saw rates near 1%. Furthermore, the data showed that men and older adults (ages 55–64) were significantly more likely to carry the antibodies than younger populations or women, likely due to higher rates of outdoor exposure in tick-heavy environments.
