How Can We Stop Catholic Parish School Closures?

To stop the decline of Catholic parish schools, educators and leaders must pivot from survival mode to a radical restoration of their core spiritual identity, a strategy codified in the newly released Front Royal Statement. By moving away from secular educational models and returning to the "Seven Cardinal Principles" of Catholic formation: prioritizing the supernatural end of the student, empowering parents as primary educators, and cultivating a living Catholic culture: parish schools can offer a unique value proposition that no secular institution can replicate.
The Crisis in the Classroom: Why 100 Schools Close Every Year
For decades, the heartbeat of the American Catholic parish was its school. It was more than a building; it was a sanctuary where faith and reason met. However, the data reveals a sobering reality. Today, roughly 6,000 Catholic schools remain in the United States, serving fewer than 1.7 million students. Perhaps most alarming is the rate of attrition: on average, 100 Catholic schools close their doors every single year.
This isn’t just a financial crisis; it’s a vision crisis. When a school closes, the community loses its "true north." We see families drifting, faith becoming a Sunday-only event, and the next generation losing their grip on the beauty of a Christ-centered life. Many of these closures are the result of schools trying to compete with public or secular private schools by becoming "just like them" but with a cross on the wall.
If we want to save our schools, we have to stop trying to be "better versions of secularism" and start being "authentically Catholic."
The Front Royal Statement: A Roadmap for Reform
In June 2026, a group of dedicated Catholic educators, bishops, and scholars gathered at Christendom College in Virginia for the Front Royal Education Summit. Their goal was simple but audacious: to create a unifying touchstone for the renewal of K-12 Catholic education. The result was the Front Royal Statement, a document that outlines seven cardinal principles designed to stop the closures and start a rebirth.

1. The Supernatural End of Education
The first and most critical principle is recognizing that education is not merely about career readiness or economic utility. It is ordered to the Beatific Vision: the ultimate union with God. Every lesson, from algebra to art, should help a child see the thumbprint of the Creator. When a school loses this focus, it lose its reason for existence.
2. The Dignity of the Child
A child is not a "human resource" to be managed or a "data point" to be tracked. Each student is a person made in the image of God. Authentic reform requires that we treat children with the dignity they deserve, fostering their integral human and spiritual development rather than reducing them to their test scores.
3. The Primary Rights and Responsibilities of Parents
For too long, schools have acted as if they own the education of the child. The Front Royal Statement reasserts that parents are the primary educators. Schools exist to assist parents, not to replace them. When schools partner deeply with families, the school community becomes an extension of the home, creating a bond that is much harder to break during financial or cultural storms.

4. The Ecclesial Responsibility of Bishops and Priests
Leadership matters. The statement calls on bishops and priests to take a "grave responsibility" for the Catholic identity of their schools. It’s not enough to balance the books; the pastor must be a shepherd in the hallways, ensuring that the school remains an authentically Catholic environment.
5. The Centrality and Formation of Teachers
A school is only as strong as its teachers. We need educators who aren't just experts in their subjects, but witnesses to the faith. The formation of a teacher’s heart and moral life is just as important as their pedagogical training.
6. The Integrity and Coherence of the Curriculum
The curriculum must be integrated. We shouldn't teach science in one box and religion in another. Truth is one. A coherent Catholic curriculum unites faith and reason, showing students that God is the author of all truth, whether it's found in a laboratory or a liturgy.
7. The Transmission of a Living Catholic Culture
Finally, a school must be a community where a Catholic way of life is lived, not just studied. This means a culture of prayer, service, and symbols that remind students who they are and whose they are.
Leading Through the Heart: A Pastoral Perspective
At Layne McDonald Ministries, we often talk about leading from the heart and finding your true north. This crisis in our schools is a leadership challenge that requires both courage and creativity. It’s easy to look at the numbers: the 100 closures a year: and feel defeated. But God is the God of the remnant. He is the God of the rebirth.
Stopping school closures isn't about better marketing or flashier facilities; it’s about spiritual restoration. When a school becomes a place where a child’s soul is nourished, where parents feel respected, and where the community feels the presence of Jesus, that school becomes indispensable.
If you are a leader, a parent, or a teacher, I want to encourage you: your gift matters. The way you show up for these 1.7 million students defines the future of the Church. Don't be afraid to demand excellence and authenticity.

Practical Steps for Your Parish School
If you want to see your local school thrive, consider these three practical steps:
Audit the Identity: Use the seven principles of the Front Royal Statement to audit your school’s culture. Is the "supernatural end" visible in the classroom?
Empower the Parents: Create forums where parents aren't just "volunteers" but partners in the vision.
Invest in Teachers: Don't just give them professional development; give them spiritual retreats. A burned-out teacher cannot light the fire of faith in a student.
The Front Royal Statement isn't just a document; it's a battle cry. It's a reminder that our schools are worth fighting for because our children's souls are worth fighting for.
