Is Christian Mentorship Dead? Do People Still Disciple Each Other?

Ever felt like you’re wandering the faith journey without a map, or a guide? If you’ve wondered where all the Christian mentors have gone (or if you even need one), you’re not alone. Truth is, mentorship and real-life discipleship are far from extinct. But they do look a little different than they did in Bible times, or even ten years ago.

Let’s dig into the honest state of Christian mentorship, why it can feel so hard to find, and how you can invite it into your own walk with Jesus. It’s real talk, practical steps, and meant for everyone who’s ready to grow alongside others.

Why Do We Even Need Mentorship?

You know how it feels to go to the gym with a buddy? You’re more likely to show up, work harder, and celebrate wins together. Mentorship is faith’s version of that, except the rewards last forever.

  • Encouragement on tough days

  • Accountability when you want to coast

  • Experience and spiritual wisdom passed down

  • Prayer partners who really get you

Jesus was the ultimate mentor, He walked, ate, and did life with his disciples every single day. If He saw fit to build up leaders by investing in them personally, why would we do it alone?

The Mentorship Gap: Why It’s Hard to Find

Surveys show a huge gap between the desire for mentorship and actually having it:

  • 84% of Christian men long for spiritual mentorship, but only 28% say they have a mentor.

  • 56% wish they had someone guiding them.

  • 57% of women’s ministry leaders say discipling women is their top priority.

  • 88% of women’s ministries offer Bible studies for discipleship.

  • Yet, only 24% of Christians of any age actively pursue their faith today.

If you feel alone craving a mentor, you’re not weird or “less spiritual.” Tons of us are searching for faithful guidance but find it tough to locate.

What’s in the Way?

  • Busyness (yep, it still wins)

  • Fear of asking (“What if they say no?”)

  • Unclear expectations about what mentorship should look like

  • Changing church culture, small groups and programs feel impersonal

  • Isolation after COVID and digital church life

But it’s not all bad news, it means you’re not the only one searching.

Does Discipleship Still Happen?

Absolutely! In fact, many churches are doubling down on the importance of relational discipleship, not just big events or classes. Younger pastors are being challenged to pour into people, not programs.

You’ll find opportunities like:

  • Women-to-women mentoring ministries

  • Men’s accountability breakfasts

  • One-on-one prayer meetups

  • Youth and college-aged discipleship huddles

  • Leadership coaching for entrepreneurs

But you might have to step out and actively pursue these. Churches like ours at Layne McDonald Ministries prioritize building up people who pour into others, creating a community where discipleship is more than just a “nice to have.”

How to Find (or Be) a Christian Mentor

Mentorship doesn’t have to be weird, awkward, or forced. Here are practical steps to start or strengthen those relationships:

1. Pray: God Knows Your Need

Ask Him to put the right person in your path, and be specific with what you’re hoping for: wisdom, encouragement, accountability, etc.

2. Look Around You

Sometimes mentors aren’t old and gray! Mentors can be a year ahead in faith or have “walked your road” before.

  • Is there someone a step ahead in your small group?

  • Does a pastor or leader spark inspiration?

  • Who encourages your faith when you talk to them?

3. Ask Directly (and Simply)

Mentorship doesn’t start with a formal ceremony. Just invite someone for coffee and say, “I’d love to learn more from your faith journey. Would you be open to talking regularly or praying together?”

4. Start Small & Clear

Begin with a short commitment: “Can we meet three times and see if it’s a good fit?”

5. Be Open and Teachable

Mentorship works best when you stay humble, honest, and eager to both give and receive.

What Makes Christian Mentorship Different?

Christian mentorship isn’t just about life coaching or “boss up” advice. It’s about:

  • Rooting growth in God’s Word

  • Pointing everything back to Jesus

  • Challenging each other toward holiness

  • Nurturing a heart for service, not just self

It’s iron sharpening iron (Proverbs 27:17): and it changes both people.

What If You Can’t Find a Mentor? Be One.

Sometimes God nudges you to reach out. You don’t need a theology degree or to have your life together to disciple someone else. All you really need is:

  • A willingness to listen

  • A real relationship with Jesus

  • Openness to sharing your story: the bumps and the breakthroughs

Start by inviting someone younger or newer to faith to grab lunch. Ask them about their week. Pray for them. Walk with them through doubts and joys.

As Dr. Layne McDonald often says, “The function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers.”

How to Build a Mentorship Culture (Wherever You Are)

Whether you’re a parent, ministry leader, or college student, you can spark a ripple effect of discipleship in your world by:

  • Valuing people over programs

  • Telling your story and inviting others to do the same

  • Offering to pray for and with others regularly

  • Modeling real faith: struggles, victories, and all

  • Encouraging others to seek out both mentors and those they can pour into

And remember, mentorship doesn’t happen by accident. It grows best in honest, humble, intentional community: so step up and make it real for yourself and others.
