[Movie Reviews]: Project Hail Mary Christian Review – Science, Sacrifice, and the Sovereignty of the Creator

When a movie about a lone astronaut trying to save humanity from extinction drops in 2026, you'd expect explosions, aliens, and maybe a few Marvel-style quips. Project Hail Mary, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and starring Ryan Gosling, delivers something surprisingly different: a story about hope, human connection, and the kind of self-sacrifice that makes you rethink what it means to live for something bigger than yourself.

As Christian viewers, we're always asking the same question when we settle in for a new release: Is this worth my time? Will it build me up or tear me down? With Project Hail Mary, the answer is nuanced. The film doesn't preach the gospel or mention God once, but it quietly wrestles with biblical themes that matter: sacrifice, purpose, and the responsibility we carry as caretakers of the world God made.

Let's break it down.

The Story in Brief

Ryland Grace wakes up alone on a spaceship with no memory of how he got there. Slowly, he pieces together the truth: Earth is dying. A mysterious organism is feeding on the sun, dimming its light and plunging the planet into a slow-motion apocalypse. Grace, a former scientist who walked away from his calling, has been sent on a one-way mission to find a solution, a literal Hail Mary pass to save billions of lives.

But he's not completely alone. He encounters an alien named Rocky (yes, really), and together they work to solve the crisis. What follows is a race against time, filled with scientific problem-solving, unexpected friendship, and a choice that will determine whether Grace returns home or gives everything to ensure others survive.

The title Project Hail Mary isn't religious, it's borrowed from football, a desperate final attempt when all else has failed. But for families of faith, it's hard not to see echoes of something deeper.

Themes That Resonate with a Christian Worldview

Sacrifice and Redemption

At its core, Project Hail Mary is about a man who abandoned his responsibilities, and gets a second chance to make things right. Grace walked away from science, from discovery, from the hard work of serving something greater than himself. When he wakes up on that ship, he's forced to confront who he was and who he's becoming.

The Bible is full of second chances. Peter denied Jesus three times, yet became the rock on which the church was built. Paul persecuted Christians before becoming the greatest missionary in history. Grace's arc mirrors that same redemptive journey: transformation through sacrifice.

By the film's climax, Grace makes a choice that costs him everything, but saves everyone else. It's the kind of selfless love Jesus described in John 15:13: "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." The film doesn't quote Scripture, but it lives out the principle.

Stewardship of Creation

Here's where things get interesting for Christian viewers. The entire plot revolves around humanity's survival depending on the health of the sun and the ecosystem it sustains. While the film never mentions God as Creator, it does reinforce a truth we find in Genesis 1: we are responsible for the world we've been given.

God didn't create the heavens and the earth just to let us trash them or ignore the consequences of our choices. He made us stewards, caretakers tasked with protecting, managing, and nurturing His creation. Project Hail Mary shows what happens when that responsibility is taken seriously, even in a secular framework.

Grace doesn't save the world because he wants glory. He does it because it's the right thing to do. That sense of duty, that recognition that we're part of something bigger, is deeply biblical, even if the film never names the One who set it all in motion.

Purpose and Calling

One of the most powerful themes in Project Hail Mary is the idea that every person has a purpose. Grace spent years running from his. When catastrophe forces him back into the arena, he discovers that his skills, his mind, his unique gifts were always meant for something significant.

Scripture is clear: God has a plan for each of us. Jeremiah 29:11 promises that His plans are for our welfare, to give us a future and a hope. Ephesians 2:10 reminds us we are His workmanship, created for good works that He prepared beforehand.

Grace's journey is a secular echo of that truth. He was made for this moment. And when he finally embraces it, he becomes the person he was always meant to be.

Where It Falls Short

Let's be honest: Project Hail Mary is not a Christian film. It doesn't point viewers to Jesus, and it doesn't explore the sovereignty of God over creation. The characters never pray, never wrestle with faith, and never acknowledge a Creator behind the universe they're trying to save.

For some families, that's going to be a deal-breaker, and that's okay. We're called to guard our hearts and minds (Philippians 4:8), and if a film doesn't build you up, you're free to skip it.

But for others, Project Hail Mary offers something valuable: a story that reflects biblical values in a secular package. It's a reminder that truth, goodness, and beauty exist even outside the walls of the church, because God is the source of all three.

The film also includes some language (PG-13 level cursing, scattered throughout), a few gross scientific moments (space sickness, alien biology), and scenes of peril that might be intense for younger kids. There's no nudity, no sexual content, and no gratuitous violence, just the weight of existential stakes and the reality of death in space.

Christian Safety Rating: ★★★★☆ (4 out of 5 Stars)

Content Breakdown:

  • Cursing: Approximately 8–12 instances of mild to moderate profanity (damn, hell, a couple of stronger words).

  • Gore/Violence: Minimal. A few scenes of space-related injuries (bloody nose, vomiting in zero gravity). One character dies off-screen. Nothing gratuitous.

  • Sexual Content: None.

  • Spiritual Concerns: No occult themes, no blasphemy. The absence of God is notable but not mocking.

Recommended for: Teens (13+) and adults. Younger kids may find the existential themes heavy, and parents should pre-screen for language tolerance.

Bottom Line: A thoughtful, hopeful film that champions sacrifice, cooperation, and human purpose. Perfect for a family movie night with older kids, followed by a conversation about what it means to live for something bigger than yourself.

Takeaway: What We Can Learn

Project Hail Mary won't replace Sunday service, but it might spark a conversation your family needs to have. It asks: What are you willing to sacrifice for others? What gifts has God given you that the world desperately needs? And are you running toward your calling, or away from it?

If you're a church leader, this could be a great discussion starter for your youth group or small group. Pair it with John 15:13, Romans 12:1–2, or Genesis 1:28, and let the Holy Spirit do the rest.

If you're a parent, use this film as a bridge. Talk about how God calls us to be stewards of His creation. Ask your kids what they think it means to live a life of purpose. And remind them that the greatest act of sacrifice in history wasn't on a spaceship, it was on a cross.
