Peace of the Presence: Free Indeed – The Life You Were Always Made For

"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." : John 8:36 (NIV)

The door is standing open.

After months of journeying through the mechanics of the media machine, after deconstructing the architectural layers of the outrage economy, and after verifying the historical bedrock of the faith that has outlasted every empire, we have arrived at the threshold. This isn't a theoretical end to a literary trilogy. This is the beginning of the rest of your life.

In the first volume of this journey, Sheep No More, we looked closely at the cage. We identified the bars: the algorithmic manipulation, the financial incentives of fear, and the way our attention is harvested and sold back to us as a product. In the second volume, They Tried to Bury It, we looked at the ground. We found that the ground of the Christian faith is not shifting sand; it is the solid, archaeological, and historical reality of the resurrected Christ.

Now, in this final chapter of Free Indeed, we are looking at the door. And the door is not locked. It never was. The only thing keeping us inside the cage was the illusion that the cage was our home.

The Trilogy Path: From Awareness to Action

Every journey toward freedom follows a specific trajectory. You cannot escape a prison you don't realize you're in. You cannot stand on ground you don't trust. And you cannot walk through a door you don't believe is open.

As we conclude this series, I want to move away from the abstract and into the lived reality of what this freedom actually looks like on a Tuesday morning. I have watched this transformation happen in the lives of real people: people who were tired, people who were anxious, and people who were ready to stop performing for a machine that didn't love them.

The Woman Who Got Herself Back

I want to describe a woman I’ve had the privilege of knowing. For years, her life was organized around the outrage cycle. Like millions of others, she spent roughly three hours every night sitting in front of cable news. She wasn't just watching the news; she was being formed by it.

The machine told her who to fear. It told her who was "destroying the country." It gave her a list of enemies and a vocabulary of condemnation. Gradually, this spilled over into her family life. She began to experience her own children and siblings through the lens of their political alignments. If they agreed with her "side," they were safe. If they didn't, they were part of the problem.

Recent data from 2024 to 2026 shows that this isn't an isolated case. Nearly 40% of Americans report having lost a family relationship or friendship over political disagreements fueled by media narratives. We are living in an era where "affective polarization": not just disagreeing on ideas, but actually disliking the other person: is tearing apart the most basic units of human connection.

But then, she did something radical. She didn't make a big announcement. She didn't post a long manifesto on social media. She simply stopped.

She put down the remote. She unplugged the television in her bedroom. She started reading books in the evenings: real books, the kind that require sustained attention and don't have pop-up ads. She started waking up thirty minutes earlier than the rest of her family, sitting in her kitchen in the quiet of the morning with a cup of coffee and her Bible.

A peaceful domestic scene of a woman sitting in a sunlit kitchen early in the morning, holding a steaming mug, with an open Bible on the table. The television in the background is dark and unplugged.

The transformation was subtle at first. Her husband noticed she stopped starting arguments at dinner about things happening a thousand miles away that none of them could control. Her children noticed she started asking them questions about their actual lives: their dreams, their struggles, their day at school: rather than testing their "positions" on the latest controversy.

Six months later, she told me, "I feel like I got myself back. Not a better version of myself. Just the person I was before the noise took over."

This is what John 10:10 looks like in the digital age. The thief: the machine that steals your peace and your relationships for profit: comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. But Jesus came so that we might have life, and have it to the full. That "full life" often begins with the subtraction of things that were never meant to be there in the first place.

The $14 Revelation

We often think of freedom as something expensive. We think we need a "retreat" or a "luxury vacation" to find peace. But freedom is actually found in the return to the simple, created order of God's world.

I know a family that had spent years chasing the "resort life." Every summer, they would go into debt to book a high-end vacation, thinking that if they just spent enough money and had enough amenities, they would finally feel the rest they were so desperately craving. But at the resort, the kids were still on their tablets, the parents were still checking work emails, and the "rest" felt like a managed performance.

One year, out of financial necessity, they changed their approach. They bought a used tent and booked a $14-a-night campsite in a state forest. No Wi-Fi. No cell service. Just trees, a fire pit, and a lake.

They discovered that the $14 campsite produced something in their children that the $4,000 resort never could. Without the digital intermediaries, the children started to look at the bugs. They started to build things out of sticks. They started to talk to each other without a screen between them. The parents found that without the constant "ping" of notifications, they actually liked each other’s company.

A small campfire in a dense pine forest at twilight, sparks rising into a starry sky. Text:

The life you were made for is not a spiritual metaphor. It is a lived, daily, campfire-in-the-park, phone-out-of-the-bedroom, neighbor-loving reality. It is available to anyone who is willing to stop believing the lie that "more" is the same thing as "better."

The Weight of the Chains

You cannot be fully free if your future is pre-committed to a creditor.

In the Assemblies of God tradition, we often talk about stewardship as a spiritual discipline. It’s not about the money; it’s about the heart. I recently watched a man walk through the process of paying off $14,000 in credit card debt. This wasn't debt from a medical emergency; it was debt accumulated from years of "retail therapy": trying to soothe an anxious soul with Amazon packages.

As the debt shrank, his anxiety shrank. He realized that the "stuff" he was buying was just another bar in the cage. It was a way to feel in control in a world that felt out of control. But once he submitted his finances to the lordship of Christ and the discipline of a budget, he felt a weight lift off his shoulders that no purchase could ever alleviate.

He told me, "I used to feel like I was working for the bank. Now, I feel like I'm working for my family and for the Kingdom. The money is the same, but the man is different."

The Map of the Free Life

So, how do we live this out starting tomorrow? Freedom is not a one-time event; it is a daily practice. It is the "long obedience in the same direction," as Eugene Peterson once called it.

Based on the Free Indeed manuscript, here is the map for the unmanipulated life. These are not rules to bind you; they are rhythms to set you free.

1. The Morning Protocol: Scripture Over Software

The first input of your day shapes the emotional weather of your day. If the first thing you do is check your phone, you have handed the keys to your peace to a thousand strangers and a dozen algorithms. You are starting your day in a reactive state, responding to the demands and outrages of the world.

Give God the first word. Before the phone comes out of the drawer, open the Word. Let the ancient truths of Scripture ground you before the modern noise attempts to unmoor you.

2. The Financial Audit: Stewardship Over Consumption

Take a hard look at your subscriptions. The modern economy is built on "passive draining": small monthly amounts that you forget about but that add up to a significant portion of your freedom. Cancel the things that don't add value to your soul. Pay down the debt that pre-commits your future. Use your margin to be generous, because generosity is the ultimate proof that you are no longer a slave to the machine.

3. The Digital Boundary: Presence Over Performance

Put your phone in a "parking lot" (a drawer or a charging station in another room) during dinner and for at least one hour before bed. Reclaim the space of your home as a sanctuary of presence. If you are a parent, your children need your eyes more than they need your provision. They need to know that they are more interesting to you than a glass screen.

4. The Weekly Sabbath: Rest Over Productivity

The machine never sleeps. It wants you to feel like you are always "behind." The Sabbath is your act of defiance. By stopping for twenty-four hours, you are declaring that the world will not fall apart without your effort, and that your value is found in who you are in Christ, not what you produce for the economy.

The Faith is Real. The Door is Open.

We started this journey by recognizing the cage. We moved to the solid ground of the historical Christian faith. And now, we see the door.

The machine is real. It is operating right now on every screen you own. It is trying to manufacture your insufficiency so it can sell you a temporary cure. It is trying to manufacture your outrage so it can sell you a tribal identity.

But the faith is real, too. It has been confirmed by hostile witnesses and validated by the archaeologist's spade. It has been proven by the Church that grew in the shadows of empires and by the martyrs who sang as they went to their deaths.

And the free life is real.

It is not a metaphor. It is not an "ideal" for the super-spiritual. It is a lived, daily reality available to you. The Son has set you free. You are free from the need to be liked by everyone. You are free from the need to be right about everything. You are free from the debt of your past and the anxiety of your future.

The Son sets you free. Free indeed.

Go and be it.

Reflection Questions

  1. The Cage: Which "bar" of the media machine currently has the strongest hold on your attention? Is it outrage, fear, or the constant need for digital stimulation?

  2. The Ground: How does knowing the historical and archaeological reliability of the Bible change the way you face the "news of the day"?

  3. The Door: What is one specific "subscription" (financial or emotional) that you can cancel this week to reclaim a bit of your freedom?

  4. The Life: Imagine your life six months from now if you committed to "Scripture over Software" every morning. What would be different in your relationships?

Concluding Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of freedom. We thank You that You did not leave us in the cage of our own making, but that You sent Your Son to open the door. Lord, give us the courage to walk through it. Help us to put down the remote, to put away the phone, and to pick up the life You always made for us. May our homes be places of peace, our hearts be places of rest, and our lives be a testimony to a world that is weary and heavy-laden. We choose life today. We choose You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
