The Biblical Questions Every Pastor Should Ask Before Using AI

Is artificial intelligence a tool for God’s kingdom or a threat to human connection?

When used with discernment and biblical grounding, AI can serve as a powerful catalyst for organizational efficiency and creative outreach without sacrificing the soul of leadership.

The New Frontier of Leadership

We are living through a digital reformation. For leaders and those in ministry, the rapid rise of artificial intelligence isn't just a technical shift; it's a theological and ethical one. According to recent Barna research (2026), the majority of church and marketplace leaders now use AI at least once a month. However, there is a significant gap between usage and comfort.

While 77% of leaders believe God can use AI for His purposes, only 12% feel truly comfortable teaching their people how to navigate it. Furthermore, 51% of leaders expressed deep concern regarding plagiarism and the integrity of message preparation. This tension highlights the need for a "True North" in our digital strategy: a way to leverage technology without losing our humanity.

If we are to lead with integrity in this new era, we must move beyond the "if" of AI and focus on the "how."

The Theology of the Machine: Imago Dei

Every conversation about technology must begin with Genesis 1:27: "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them."

The concept of the Imago Dei (Image of God) is the ultimate boundary for AI. Machines can process data, simulate logic, and even mimic empathy, but they do not possess a soul, a conscience, or the divine breath of life. As a leader, your greatest value is not your ability to synthesize information: AI can do that faster. Your value is your ability to experience the Holy Spirit, offer presence, and embody the love of Christ.

When we use AI, we must ensure it remains a tool in the hand of the image-bearer, rather than a replacement for the image-bearer.

The 7-Question Ethical Framework for AI in Ministry

To help you lead with clarity, I have developed this 7-question framework. Ask these questions before integrating any AI tool into your leadership workflow or ministry operations:

  1. Does this tool enhance or replace human connection? If the technology creates a barrier between you and the people you serve, it is likely a hindrance.

  2. Is there full transparency in how this was created? Integrity requires that we don't pass off machine-generated insights as personal, spiritual revelations.

  3. Does it honor the privacy and dignity of individuals? With 83% of leaders concerned about data privacy, we must be the guardians of the information entrusted to us.

  4. Is the output aligned with Biblical truth? AI is trained on vast datasets that include non-biblical worldviews. We must be the final filter.

  5. Does this save time for more meaningful work? AI should free you up for the "ministry of presence": visiting the hurting, mentoring the young, and sitting with the lonely.

  6. Am I becoming overly dependent on the algorithm? If you cannot lead without the prompt, you may be losing your spiritual edge.

  7. Does this bring glory to God or just efficiency to the organization? Our goal is not just a better "machine," but a more vibrant expression of Christ’s love.

Excellence in the Digital Workspace

Colossians 3:23 reminds us: "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters."

In the context of AI, this means we strive for excellence. We don't use AI to "cut corners" or be lazy. We use it to sharpen our research, organize our thoughts, and reach people more effectively on the digital platforms where they spend their time. Whether you are leading a corporation or a local congregation, your digital footprint should reflect the beauty and order of God's kingdom.

By using these tools ethically, we demonstrate that the Gospel is not afraid of the future. We show that faith provides the necessary guardrails for a world that often feels like it's spinning out of control.

Finding Your True North

The most important thing to remember is that your story: and the stories of those you lead: are not governed by algorithms. They are written by the Creator of the universe. AI can give you a draft, but only God can give you a destiny. When you feel overwhelmed by the pace of change, step back and reconnect with the Source. Your influence as a leader comes from your intimacy with the Father, not your proficiency with a platform.

A Life-Changing Truth: You were never meant to carry the weight of the future on your own shoulders. While technology changes every hour, the love of Christ and the purpose He has for your life remain unshakeable. You are not a data point; you are a priceless child of God. Your creativity, your empathy, and your faithful presence are the very things the world needs most right now. Use the tools, but never forget that you are the one called to bring the light.
