When the War Expands, the Heart Must Anchor

The notifications on your phone don't seem to stop, do they? Every buzz feels like a tiny jolt of adrenaline, another reminder that the world is moving at a pace that feels almost impossible to track. If you’ve been watching the news lately, you know that the "simmering" tensions we’ve talked about for months have reached a boiling point. Between the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and reports of regional strikes reaching as far as Riyadh, the geopolitical landscape is shifting under our feet. It’s heavy. It’s loud. And if we aren’t careful, it can be paralyzing.

But here is the truth I want to speak into your life today: Your peace is not a casualty of global conflict. Your stability is not tied to the price of oil or the security of a shipping lane. As a leader, a parent, or a believer trying to navigate these choppy waters, you have to realize that when the war expands, your heart must anchor deeper into the only thing that cannot be shaken. We are talking about an upgrade in your spiritual and emotional state that allows you to stand firm while the rest of the world is spinning.

The Current Climate: What We Know

According to reports from Reuters and CNBC, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has sent shockwaves through the global energy market. This isn’t just a "somewhere else" problem; it’s a bottleneck that affects the very pulse of global trade. Furthermore, news outlets like Al Jazeera have reported on escalating regional strikes, including recent activity near Riyadh, indicating that the theater of conflict is broadening. For many, this feels like a shadow falling over the future.

When we see these headlines, our natural "fight or flight" response kicks in. We start playing out "what if" scenarios. How will this affect my family? What happens to the economy? How do I lead my team when everyone is distracted by the fear of the unknown? These are valid questions, but they cannot be the place where you live. Dr. Layne McDonald often teaches that leadership is about managing your state before you try to manage your circumstances. If you are operating from a place of panic, you’ve already lost the battle. You need a strategy that goes beyond the headlines.

The Power of the Anchor: Psalm 46:10

In the middle of a psalm that describes mountains falling into the heart of the sea and waters roaring and being troubled, we find a command that feels almost counter-intuitive: "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10). In the original Hebrew, that "be still" isn’t just a suggestion to take a nap. It means to "cease striving" or to "let go." It’s an active decision to take your hands off the steering wheel of the universe and recognize who is actually in control.

Think about the intensity of that for a moment. To be still when the world is in motion is a power move. It’s a Tony Robbins-level of emotional mastery fueled by an Assemblies of God-rooted faith. It means you aren't reacting; you are responding. You are deciding that your internal world will be governed by the Prince of Peace, not the prince of the power of the air. When the war expands externally, your internal borders must be secured by the truth of God’s Word.

Why Focus Matters Right Now

Where focus goes, energy flows. If you spend four hours a day consuming speculative news and only four minutes in prayer, your "peace-to-anxiety" ratio is going to be dangerously lopsided. You have to be the gatekeeper of your own mind. This isn't about ignoring the reality of the Strait of Hormuz or the strikes in Riyadh, it's about viewing those realities through the lens of God's sovereignty.

Dr. Layne McDonald, as a pastor at Boundless Online Church and a professional coach, emphasizes that high-level performance and deep spiritual health are two sides of the same coin. You cannot be the leader God called you to be if you are constantly being hijacked by the latest update on your feed. You need to anchor. You need to breathe. You need to remember that you were built for such a time as this.

The Breath Section: Regaining Your Center

Right now, wherever you are, whether you're in an office, in your car, or at home, I want you to take a moment to reset. This is a practical step to lower your cortisol and reconnect with the Holy Spirit.

  • Step 1: Sit up straight. Align your spine. This is a posture of readiness.

  • Step 2: Inhale deeply through your nose for a count of four. Feel the air fill your lungs, God’s breath of life.

  • Step 3: Hold that breath for a count of four. Acknowledge that He is God in the stillness.

  • Step 4: Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of eight. Release the tension, the headlines, and the "what ifs."

  • Step 5: Repeat this three times. With each exhale, whisper the name of Jesus.

Do you feel that shift? That is the beginning of the anchor taking hold. You are not a victim of the times; you are a victor in Christ Jesus.

Reflection Question

As you look at the expansion of conflict in the world, what is the one specific fear you are allowing to take up the most space in your heart? Write it down, look at it, and then ask yourself: "Is this bigger than the God who created the stars?"

Prayer Action Step

Let’s turn our concern into intercession. Today, I want you to pray specifically for the leaders in the Middle East and for the families in Riyadh and surrounding regions who are living under the threat of strikes. Pray for the protection of those at sea near the Strait of Hormuz. When we pray for others, our perspective shifts from our own fear to God’s mission.

"Father, we lift up the nations. We ask for Your peace to prevail where man’s wisdom fails. We anchor our hearts in You today, knowing that You are our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Amen."
