Welcome back to the journey. If you’ve been following along with our Christian Discipleship 101 series, you know that we aren’t just looking for "information", we are looking for transformation. In the first few chapters, we laid the groundwork of what it means to say "Yes" to Jesus. But now, we are moving into the meat of the matter.
Following Jesus isn't a hobby; it’s a total redirection of your life's compass. It’s about learning to see the world through His eyes, feel with His heart, and walk in His power. Today, I am thrilled to "reveal" the roadmap for the rest of this book, and specifically, to dive deep into Chapter 4: The Authority of Scripture.
This is the turning point. This is where we stop guessing what God wants and start listening to what He has already said.
Book: Christian Discipleship 101 – Chapter 4: The Lamp to Your Feet: Understanding the Authority of Scripture
Imagine you are lost in a dense forest at midnight. The canopy is so thick that even the stars are hidden. Every rustle in the brush sounds like a predator. You have no sense of direction, and your "internal compass" is spinning in circles because of the panic. Suddenly, someone hands you a high-powered lantern and a topographical map.
What do you do? Do you argue with the map? Do you ignore the lantern and try to navigate by "vibes"? Of course not. You cling to that light because it’s your only hope of getting home.
For the Christian, the Bible is that lantern and that map. In our culture today, everyone has an "opinion" on how to live. Every social media influencer, every self-help guru, and every political pundit wants to tell you what is true and what is right. But as disciples of Jesus, we have a different source. We believe that the Bible isn't just a book of good advice; it is the Inspired Word of God.
The Foundation: Why We Trust the Book
In the Assemblies of God, we believe that the Scriptures, both the Old and New Testaments, are verbally inspired of God and are the revelation of God to man, the infallible, authoritative rule of faith and conduct (2 Timothy 3:15-17; 1 Thessalonians 2:13; 2 Peter 1:21).
But let's talk about that in casual terms. What does "inspired" actually mean? It doesn't mean the writers were "inspired" the way a poet is inspired by a sunset. It means the Holy Spirit literally breathed through human authors to produce a perfect message.
When you read the Bible, you are reading the Creator's manual for the human heart. Think about it: Who knows better how a car should run, the guy who built it, or a random person on the street? God built you. He knows your design. He knows what makes you thrive and what makes you break. When He gives us a "commandment," it’s not to suck the fun out of life; it’s to keep us from driving off a cliff.
The Problem of "My Truth"
We live in an age that loves the phrase "Speak your truth." While it's important to be honest about our experiences, "my truth" is a terrible foundation for a life. Why? Because our feelings change faster than the weather. One day you feel like you're on top of the world; the next, you feel like a failure. If your life is built on your feelings, you will be constantly unstable.
Discipleship means trading "my truth" for The Truth.
Jesus said, "If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (John 8:31-32). Notice the order:
Abide in the Word.
Know the Truth.
Experience Freedom.
You can't get to step three without step one. Abiding means more than just reading a verse on a coffee mug. It means living in it. It means letting the Bible have the final say in your relationships, your finances, your secret thoughts, and your public actions.
How to Actually Read the Bible (Without Falling Asleep)
I get it. Some parts of the Bible are hard. You start in Genesis and Exodus, and everything is exciting, plagues, parting seas, and miracles! Then you hit Leviticus, and suddenly you’re reading about mildew on walls and ancient dietary laws, and your eyes glaze over.
Here is the secret: The Bible is one big story about Jesus. From the first page of Genesis to the last page of Revelation, it’s all about God’s plan to rescue humanity and restore His kingdom.
If you are a new believer, don't feel like you have to start at page one and read through like a novel. Start with the Gospel of John. Meet Jesus. See how He treats people. Listen to His voice. Then, move to the Book of Acts to see how the Holy Spirit empowered the early church.
When you read, ask the Holy Spirit to help you. Before you open the pages, pray: "Holy Spirit, You wrote this. Please explain it to me today." He is the best teacher you could ever have.
The Authority of Scripture in Daily Life
Authority sounds like a heavy word, but in the Kingdom of God, authority is protective. When we say the Bible has authority, we mean:
It is the final court of appeal. If my feelings say one thing and the Bible says another, the Bible wins.
It is our source of power. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, he didn't argue with Satan using philosophy. He said, "It is written..." (Matthew 4).
It is our source of comfort. When the world is falling apart, the promises of God are the only things that don't shake.
As you grow as a disciple, you will find that the Word of God begins to "read you." It points out areas where you need to forgive, areas where you’ve been selfish, and areas where God wants to pour out His grace. Embrace that. It’s the process of sanctification: becoming more like Jesus.
Looking Ahead: The Roadmap of Your Transformation
I promised to reveal the rest of the journey. Discipleship is a lifetime process, but we’ve mapped out the next steps to help you stay on the path. Here is what is coming in Christian Discipleship 101:
Chapter 5: The Breath of the Soul: Developing a Life of Prayer. Communication is the lifeblood of any relationship. We’ll learn how to talk to God: and more importantly, how to listen.
Chapter 6: The Power of Presence: Why the Local Church Matters. You were never meant to follow Jesus alone. We’ll explore the "one anothers" of Scripture.
Chapter 7: The Spirit-Filled Life: Walking in the Power of the Holy Ghost. As an Assemblies of God ministry, we believe in the empowering work of the Spirit. This isn't just for "super-Christians"; it’s for you.
Chapter 8: The Cost of the Cross: Taking Up Your Daily Burden. Jesus said following Him would cost us everything. We’ll talk about surrender and sacrifice.
Chapter 9: The Heart of Worship: Living a Life of Praise. Worship is more than a song on Sunday. It’s a posture of the heart.
Chapter 10: The Battle Within: Overcoming Temptation and Sin. We all struggle. We’ll look at biblical strategies for winning the war in your mind.
Chapter 11: The Fruit of the Spirit: Character Development in Christ. How do you know if you're growing? We look at the fruit: love, joy, peace, and more.
Chapter 12: The Gifts of the Spirit: Serving the Body with Supernatural Grace. God has given you unique gifts to build up His people.
Chapter 13: The Great Commission: Sharing Your Faith with Boldness. You have a story to tell. We’ll learn how to share it without being weird or pushy.
Chapter 14: The Steward’s Mindset: Managing Money, Time, and Talents. Everything we have belongs to Him. How do we manage it for His glory?
Chapter 15: The Armor of God: Standing Firm in Spiritual Warfare. The enemy is real, but your victory is secure. We’ll gear up for the fight.
Chapter 16: The Healing Touch: Understanding God’s Will for Wholeness. Jesus still heals today: physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Chapter 17: The Blessed Hope: Living with an Eternal Perspective. This world is not our home. We look forward to His return.
Chapter 18: The Servant Leader: Following Jesus’ Example of Humility. To lead in the Kingdom is to serve.
Chapter 19: The Disciple-Maker: Turning Followers into Leaders. Every disciple is called to make another disciple. It’s the cycle of life.
Chapter 20: The Finish Line: Persevering Until the End. We don't just start well; we finish strong.
Reflection Questions
When you read the Bible, do you view it as "suggestions" or as the "authoritative Word of God"? How would your life change if you fully embraced its authority?
What is the biggest obstacle you face when trying to read the Bible consistently? (Busyness, confusion, boredom, etc.)
Take a moment to look at your current "values." Are they based on cultural trends, or are they rooted in Scripture?
Is there a specific area of your life where you have been ignoring what the Word says? What is one step you can take today to submit that area to Jesus?
A Prayer for the Disciple
Lord Jesus, I thank You that You haven't left me to wander in the dark. Thank You for Your Word. I ask that You would give me a hunger for the Scriptures like I’ve never had before. Open my eyes to see the truth. Give me the courage to obey even when it’s hard. I submit my thoughts, my feelings, and my future to the authority of Your Word. Let it be a lamp to my feet today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
