Over the course of a recent weekend in Lima, Peru, a significant spiritual event took place at the Estadio Monumental. The "Esperanza Lima" festival, a large-scale evangelistic outreach, drew a record-breaking crowd of 90,000 people. This gathering was led by evangelist Franklin Graham and represented the culmination of nearly a year of intensive preparation.
The stadium, which usually hosts intense soccer matches, was filled to capacity with individuals seeking a message of hope. According to organizers from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) and local leadership, thousands of attendees made public professions of faith in Jesus Christ during the event. These individuals came forward or signaled their commitment following a presentation of the Gospel.
The logistical scale of the festival was extensive. More than 2,000 local Peruvian churches across various denominations collaborated to host the event. This unity involved months of prayer meetings, volunteer training, and community outreach efforts. Thousands of local believers were trained as counselors to assist those who responded to the invitation at the end of the program.
Musicians and worship leaders provided a backdrop for the evening, but the central focus remained on the spoken word. The message delivered was centered on the basic tenets of the Christian faith, emphasizing God’s love and the possibility of a new beginning.

At The McReport, we look at this event through the lens of the "Great Commission." In the Assemblies of God (AG) tradition, we believe that the mandate to "go and make disciples of all nations" is the primary mission of the Church. Seeing 90,000 people gather in a single venue to hear the Gospel is a powerful manifestation of this calling.
This event is a beautiful picture of the harvest. We often speak of "the harvest" in spiritual terms, referring to the moment when hearts are ready to receive the message of salvation. In Lima, the harvest was visible. The sheer volume of people who dedicated their lives to Christ highlights a profound spiritual hunger that persists in our modern world.
We also celebrate the unity of the local churches. In a world often characterized by division, the sight of thousands of churches working together for a single purpose: the Gospel: is a witness in itself. This collaboration is a core AG value. We believe that the Body of Christ is most effective when it moves as one, empowered by the Holy Spirit to reach the lost.
For us, these decisions represent more than just a moment in a stadium. We believe they represent a life-changing encounter with the grace of God. According to our faith, salvation is the first and greatest miracle. It is the beginning of a transformed life, a restored relationship with the Creator, and a new identity in Christ.

The success of "Esperanza Lima" also underscores the power of the simple Gospel. In an age of complex philosophies and shifting cultural values, the core message of salvation through Jesus remains relevant and potent. It speaks to the universal human needs for forgiveness, purpose, and hope.
From an AG perspective, we also recognize this as part of a global movement. We are seeing similar outpourings of faith across the Global South. The center of gravity for Christianity has shifted, and events like the one in Lima are clear indicators of where the Holy Spirit is moving with great momentum.
We believe in the "Fourfold Gospel": Jesus as Savior, Baptizer in the Holy Spirit, Healer, and Soon-Coming King. Events like this primarily focus on Jesus as Savior, which is the essential foundation for everything else. Without the initial step of salvation, the rest of the Christian walk cannot begin.

The conclusion of a festival is not the end of the story; rather, it is the beginning of a new chapter for the city of Lima. While the stadium has emptied and the stage has been dismantled, the real work is just starting.
Our response should be one of prayer and support. We must pray for the local churches in Lima as they take on the vital responsibility of discipleship. A public profession of faith is a significant first step, but the long-term health of a believer depends on being rooted in a local community of faith.
Let’s pray for the "follow-up" process. This involves thousands of counselors reaching out to those who made decisions, connecting them with local congregations, and beginning the process of teaching them the Word of God.
Pray for the pastors in Peru. They have seen a massive influx of new believers. This is a blessing, but it also requires great wisdom, resources, and stamina. Pray that these leaders are strengthened and that their churches become places of true belonging and growth for every person who walked onto that stadium grass.

We also respond with gratitude. It is encouraging to see "Hidden Good News" like this breaking through the noise of the daily news cycle. While much of the news focuses on conflict and crisis, the story of 90,000 people seeking hope is a reminder that God is still at work in the world.
Finally, we should let this story stir our own hearts. It serves as a reminder to be bold in our own circles. If God can move so powerfully in a stadium in Peru, He can move in our neighborhoods, our workplaces, and our families. The harvest is not just in Lima; it is wherever we are.
