A New Beginning: 52 Couples Wed After Texas Pastor’s Marriage Challenge

On a Friday in early March 2026, the sanctuary at Lakepointe Church in Dallas, Texas, looked a little different than usual. There wasn't just one bride and one groom. Instead, dozens of couples stood together, ready to transition from cohabitation into the sacred covenant of marriage.
This mass wedding ceremony was the result of a direct challenge issued by Senior Pastor Josh Howerton during a sermon series in late February. The event saw 52 couples take a definitive step toward honoring God with their relationships, moving past the "trial run" of living together and into the permanence of a biblical union.
The church didn't just provide the challenge; they provided the solution. By offering the gowns, the suits, the counseling, and the reception, Lakepointe Church removed the logistical and financial barriers that often keep couples from saying "I do."
The Facts
On February 22, 2026, Pastor Josh Howerton delivered a message titled "3 Things That Will Kill Your Marriage." During this sermon, he addressed the biblical view of cohabitation and the modern trend of living together before marriage. Howerton challenged unmarried couples in the congregation who were currently living together to "put a ring on it" and enter into a formal covenant.
His message was backed by several data points shared with the congregation. Howerton noted research showing that couples who attend church regularly are 50% less likely to experience divorce. Additionally, he cited statistics indicating that individuals who hold a belief in the infallible, inerrant Word of God are 46% less likely to commit adultery.

The challenge was clear: if a couple was already living as though they were in a covenant, they should honor God by making that covenant official. Following the sermon, 52 couples stepped forward. Each couple participated in pastoral counseling sessions to ensure they were spiritually and emotionally prepared for the commitment.
On the following Friday, the church hosted a joint wedding ceremony. The church provided everything necessary for the day, including attire and a reception for the families. James Moore, one of the participants, stated that the message "really lit a fire" under him and his partner, noting that they had previously been making excuses and putting the commitment off.
The Sunday following the ceremony, the newlywed couples were recognized during the church service. Over 1,000 members of the congregation gave them a standing ovation. Howerton emphasized that the goal of the church was to offer support and a path toward restoration rather than judgment for past decisions.
The Lens
At The McReport, we view this through the lens of the Assemblies of God (AG) faith and the broader call to restore the family unit. From an AG perspective, marriage is not merely a social contract or a legal convenience; it is a sacred covenant established by God. It is a physical representation of the relationship between Christ and His Church.
This story is a powerful testimony to the grace of God. Grace does not leave us where we are; it meets us in our current state and provides a path toward holiness and peace.
For many of these 52 couples, the "bridge" provided by the church was essential. Often, the church is seen as a barrier: a place of "no" and "not yet." In this instance, the church acted as a facilitator of "yes."

The sanctity of marriage is a cornerstone of a healthy society and a healthy church. By encouraging these couples to move from cohabitation to a covenant, the church is helping to build a foundation for spiritual growth. When a family unit is aligned with biblical principles, it creates an environment where the Holy Spirit can move freely, and where children can be raised in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
We believe in the power of repentance and the beauty of a fresh start. This ceremony was not about pointing out past mistakes, but about celebrating a commitment to future faithfulness. It highlights the role of the local church as a community that fosters spiritual maturity and accountability. When the community rallies around those making difficult but right choices, the entire Body of Christ is strengthened.
The Response
The transition into marriage is a beautiful one, but it is also a journey that requires daily grace and intentionality. We invite you to join us in praying for these 52 new families as they begin their lives together in Christ.
Pray for the husbands and wives as they learn to navigate life within the security of a covenant. Pray that their homes would be filled with the peace of God and that they would remain rooted in a local church body.

Pray also for the leadership at Lakepointe Church and other congregations across the country. May more churches find creative, grace-filled ways to help their members align their lives with the Word of God, removing the obstacles that hinder people from walking in obedience.
Finally, pray for the many other couples across the nation who are in similar positions. Pray that they would feel the conviction of the Holy Spirit and the pull of God’s grace, leading them toward the peace that comes from living in accordance with His design for family and relationship.
The Invite
Hope is found in the restoration of things that were once broken or out of place. This story serves as a reminder that it is never too late to start doing things God's way.
