Welcome back to the journey. If you’ve been following along, you’ve already laid the foundation of what it means to follow Jesus. You’ve explored the initial "Yes" to Christ and the radical transformation that comes with new life. But as any traveler will tell you, the first step is just the beginning. The "Way of Jesus" isn’t a one-time decision; it’s a daily walk, a continuous unfolding of grace, power, and purpose.
In this installment, we are diving deep. We are moving from the milk to the meat. From Chapter 4 through Chapter 20, we will walk through the core pillars of Spirit-empowered discipleship. Whether you are a new believer or someone looking to refresh your walk, these seventeen lessons are designed to move you from "struggling for growth" to "thriving in grace."
We’re covering it all: the intimacy of prayer, the power of the Word, the fire of the Holy Spirit, the grit of overcoming temptation, and the beauty of living for eternity. Grab your Bible, open your heart, and let’s grow together.
Chapter 4: The Power of Prayer (Talking with God)
"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." , 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Prayer isn’t a religious ritual; it’s a relational lifeline. Imagine trying to maintain a marriage or a friendship without ever speaking. It’s impossible. Prayer is how we communicate our hearts to God and, more importantly, how we position ourselves to hear His heart.
For many new believers, prayer feels awkward. You might worry about using the "right" words or sounding "holy" enough. But God isn't looking for a performance; He’s looking for a person. He wants you. Prayer is simply the breath of the soul. When you stop praying, you stop breathing spiritually.
The Lesson: Start where you are. Use simple, honest language. Tell God what you’re worried about, what you’re thankful for, and where you need help. Practical Step: Set a "Prayer Appointment." Just five minutes in the morning. No phone, no distractions, just you and Jesus.
Chapter 5: The Living Word (Reading and Applying Scripture)

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." , Psalm 119:105
If prayer is us talking to God, the Bible is God talking to us. The Bible isn’t just a book of ancient history; it is "living and active" (Hebrews 4:12). It is the primary way God reveals His character, His promises, and His instructions for our lives.
As an Assemblies of God ministry, we believe the Bible is the infallible, authoritative rule of faith and conduct. It is our "North Star." Without it, we are left to follow our feelings, and feelings are terrible leaders. When you read the Word, you aren't just gaining information; you are undergoing transformation.
The Lesson: Don't just read for the sake of checking a box. Read to meet the Author. Ask the Holy Spirit to highlight one verse each day that you can carry with you. Practical Step: Start in the Gospel of John. Read one chapter a day. Ask: What does this tell me about Jesus? What does this tell me about how I should live?
Chapter 6: Fellowship and Community (Why We Need the Church)
"And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some..." , Hebrews 10:24-25
You were never meant to follow Jesus alone. The "lone ranger" Christian is a myth, and a dangerous one. We are designed for community. The Church is described as a "Body" (1 Corinthians 12), and a hand can’t survive if it’s detached from the arm.
Community provides three essential things: protection, correction, and affection. We protect each other from the enemy’s lies; we correct each other when we drift off course; and we provide the love and support needed during life’s storms.
The Lesson: Discipleship happens in circles, not just rows. Being a "disciple" means being part of the family of God. Practical Step: Join a small group or a Bible study this week. Don't just attend; participate.
Chapter 7: Worship as a Lifestyle (Beyond Sunday Morning)
"I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship." , Romans 12:1
Worship isn’t just the twenty minutes of singing before a sermon. Worship is an all-day, every-day response to who God is. It’s how you handle your taxes, how you treat your coworkers, and how you respond to traffic.
When we worship, we are acknowledging God’s "worth-ship." We are saying that He is more valuable than our comfort, our reputation, or our desires. A lifestyle of worship keeps our eyes off ourselves and on the King.
The Lesson: Everything you do can be an act of worship if done for God’s glory. Practical Step: Throughout your day, pause and say, "Lord, I do this task for You." Turn your work into an offering.
Chapter 8: Sharing Your Story (Simple Evangelism)
"But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you..." , 1 Peter 3:15
You don’t need a theology degree to tell someone about Jesus. You just need a story. Evangelism is simply one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread.
Your testimony, the story of what your life was like before Jesus, how you met Him, and what your life is like now, is one of the most powerful tools in your discipleship toolkit. People can argue with your logic, but they can’t argue with your experience.
The Lesson: God didn't save you just to get you to heaven; He saved you to help others get there too. Practical Step: Write out your "3-minute story." Practice telling it so you're ready when the door opens.
Chapter 9: Understanding the Holy Spirit (Power for Living)

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses..." , Acts 1:8
Many believers try to live the Christian life on their own strength. It’s like trying to drive a car by pushing it. You’ll get exhausted, and you won’t get very far. The baptism in the Holy Spirit is the "fuel" for the Christian life.
In the Assemblies of God, we believe that the baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct experience from salvation. It is a gift from the Father that empowers us for service, witnessing, and holy living. It’s not just about an emotional experience; it’s about spiritual equipment.
The Lesson: The Holy Spirit is your Comforter, Counselor, and Empowerer. You cannot fulfill God’s call on your life without His help. Practical Step: Ask God to fill you with His Spirit today. Simply pray: "Lord, I surrender. Fill me with Your power so I can represent You well."
Chapter 10: Spiritual Gifts (Serving the Body)
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord..." , 1 Corinthians 12:4-5
Every single believer has been given a "spiritual gift", a special ability given by the Holy Spirit to build up the Church and reach the world. Some are gifts of speaking, some of serving, some of leading, and some of healing.
You aren't a consumer in the Kingdom of God; you're a contributor. When you don't use your gift, the whole Body suffers. Discipleship is about discovering your "shape", your spiritual gifts, heart, abilities, personality, and experiences, and using it for God.
The Lesson: You are gifted for a purpose. Your "spiritual job" is to help others. Practical Step: Take a spiritual gifts assessment or ask your pastor where the greatest need in the church is. Start serving.
Chapter 11: Sanctification and Holiness (Becoming Like Jesus)
"As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct..." , 1 Peter 1:14-15
Sanctification is a big word for a simple process: becoming more like Jesus and less like your old self. It is both an "instant" work (you are declared holy at salvation) and a "progressive" work (you grow in holiness every day).
Holiness isn't about following a list of rules to make God love you. It’s about loving God so much that you want to be like Him. It’s the process of the Holy Spirit "weeding" the garden of your heart and planting the seeds of righteousness.
The Lesson: Growth takes time. Don't be discouraged by your mistakes; just keep turning back to the Light. Practical Step: Identify one habit or attitude that doesn't reflect Jesus. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you replace it with a godly alternative.
Chapter 12: Stewardship (Time, Talent, and Treasure)
"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms." , 1 Peter 4:10
Everything you have belongs to God. Your money, your time, your talents, they are all on loan. Stewardship is the art of managing God’s resources for God’s purposes.
Generosity is a hallmark of a disciple. When we give, whether it’s our tithe to the local church or our time to a neighbor, we are breaking the power of greed in our lives and trusting God as our Provider.
The Lesson: You can't out-give God. Living with an open hand brings more joy than living with a clenched fist. Practical Step: Look at your calendar and your bank statement. Does either one reflect that Jesus is Lord of your life? Make one adjustment this week to give more to His Kingdom.
Chapter 13: Divine Healing (Trusting the Great Physician)
"Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord." , James 5:14
We believe that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. That means He is still the Healer. Divine healing is a provision of the Gospel. While we don't always understand why some are healed instantly and others aren't, we continue to pray in faith, knowing that God’s nature is to restore.
Discipleship involves learning to trust God with our bodies and our pain. Whether He heals us through a miracle, through medicine, or ultimately in eternity, our trust remains in His goodness.
The Lesson: Don't be afraid to ask for the miraculous. God cares about your physical well-being. Practical Step: If you are struggling with sickness, ask for prayer at your church this Sunday. Step out in faith.
Chapter 14: The Second Coming (Living in Readiness)
"For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first." , 1 Thessalonians 4:16
Jesus is coming back. This isn't a scary threat; it's a "blessed hope" (Titus 2:13). The reality of the Second Coming should change how we live today. It gives us urgency for the lost and comfort in our trials.
In the Assemblies of God, we look forward to the "rapture", the catching away of the saints, and the eventual visible return of Christ to reign on earth. Knowing the story ends with His victory allows us to live with courage now.
The Lesson: Live as if He died yesterday, rose today, and is coming back tomorrow. Practical Step: Ask yourself: If Jesus returned tonight, would I be ashamed of how I’m living? Let that answer guide your choices today.
Chapter 15: Family Discipleship (Faith at Home)
"These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road..." , Deuteronomy 6:6-7
Your most important mission field is under your own roof. Discipleship starts at home. Whether you are a parent, a spouse, or a sibling, your primary calling is to model the love of Christ to your family.
Faith shouldn't be something that only happens at church. It should be part of the rhythm of your home, in the way you resolve conflict, the way you pray together, and the way you serve one another.
The Lesson: You are the primary spiritual influence in your home. Don't outsource it to the church. Practical Step: Start a "Family Devotional" time. Even five minutes of reading a verse and praying together before bed can change the atmosphere of your home.
Chapter 16: Biblical Worldview (Seeing Through Truth)
"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind..." , Romans 12:2
Every day, you are bombarded with messages from the culture about what is true, what is good, and what is valuable. A "worldview" is the lens through which you see the world. Discipleship is the process of replacing a worldly lens with a biblical one.
We must learn to look at money, sex, power, politics, and suffering through the filter of Scripture. When we do, the world’s "wisdom" often looks like foolishness, and God’s "foolishness" is revealed as the ultimate truth.
The Lesson: Discernment is a muscle. The more you study the Word, the easier it is to spot the lies of the world. Practical Step: Before you form an opinion on a hot cultural topic, ask: What does the Bible say about this? Not "What do I feel?" but "What is written?"
Chapter 17: Hearing God’s Voice (Developing Discernment)
"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." , John 10:27
One of the most common questions new believers ask is, "How do I know if it’s God speaking or just my own thoughts?" Learning to recognize the "still small voice" (1 Kings 19:12) is a key part of maturity.
God speaks through His Word (primarily), through the Holy Spirit’s prompting in our spirits, through the counsel of godly people, and through circumstances. He will never say anything that contradicts the Bible.
The Lesson: God is speaking; we just need to learn how to listen. Practical Step: Spend ten minutes in "Listening Prayer." Ask God a question, then sit in silence with a pen and paper. Write down what comes to mind, then test it against Scripture.
Chapter 18: Overcoming Temptation (Winning the Battle)
"No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape..." , 1 Corinthians 10:13
The Christian life is a battle. You have an enemy who wants to steal your joy and destroy your witness. Temptation is one of his primary weapons. But here is the good news: temptation is not sin; yielding to it is.
Jesus was tempted in every way we are, yet was without sin. He showed us how to win: by using the Word of God as a sword. When the enemy whispers a lie, you must answer with the Truth.
The Lesson: You aren't a victim of your impulses. You have the power of the Holy Spirit to say "No." Practical Step: Identify your "trigger" moments: the times or places where you are most likely to fail. Create a plan to avoid those situations or have a "battle verse" ready to recite.
Chapter 19: Perseverance (Running the Race to the End)
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us..." : Hebrews 12:1
Spiritual growth isn't a sprint; it's a marathon. There will be seasons of "mountain-top" excitement and seasons of "valley" dryness. Perseverance is the ability to keep walking when the feelings are gone.
Discipleship is a "long obedience in the same direction." We keep our eyes on the finish line: Jesus Himself: and we refuse to give up, no matter how many times we stumble.
The Lesson: Finishing well is more important than starting fast. Practical Step: When you feel like quitting, remember your "Why." Re-read your testimony and remind yourself of what Jesus has done for you.
Chapter 20: Eternal Purpose (Living for the Kingdom)

"But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal." : Matthew 6:20
We are concluding this guide where everything truly begins: with Eternity. You were created for more than just seventy or eighty years on this planet. You were created for an eternal Kingdom.
Living with an "Eternal Purpose" means making decisions today based on how they will matter a million years from now. It shifts our priorities from temporary comfort to eternal impact. Every act of kindness, every prayer, every soul reached for Christ is a treasure stored in heaven.
The Lesson: Don't waste your life on things that don't last. Live for the One who lived: and died: for you. Practical Step: Ask yourself daily: What am I doing today that will matter in eternity? Let that perspective fuel your passion for Jesus.
Reflection Questions
Which of these seventeen lessons feels most urgent for your spiritual growth right now? Why?
How has your understanding of the Holy Spirit’s role changed after reading Chapter 9?
What is one practical step you can take today to "Impress the Word" on your family or those around you?
In what areas of your life are you still "struggling for growth" rather than "resting in His strength"?
A Prayer for the Journey
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of discipleship. Thank You that You don't just save us and leave us; You walk with us, teach us, and empower us. Lord, I ask that these lessons would take deep root in my heart. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Give me a hunger for Your Word and a passion for Your Kingdom. Help me to run my race with perseverance and to live every day with an eternal perspective. May my life be a "living sacrifice" that brings glory to Your Name. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
