Good News: 361,000 Trees in One Hour : and a World Record for the Planet

Sometimes the news is simply good.

On a historic Sunday in western India, the city of Ahmedabad achieved what many thought impossible: a Guinness World Record for the most saplings planted in a single hour. A staggering 361,000 young trees were placed into the earth at Bhadaj, covering an area of approximately 76,000 square meters.

This was not a solo effort or a government-only mandate. More than 25,000 volunteers : including schoolchildren, police cadets, NGO workers, community leaders, and citizens of all ages : gathered with shovels and saplings in hand. The atmosphere was one of purpose and unity as they employed the Miyawaki method, a specialized technique developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. This method allows for the growth of dense, native forests in a fraction of the usual time, often resulting in ecosystems that are 30 times denser and grow 10 times faster than traditional plantations.

In total, thirty-five different indigenous species were selected for the project to ensure biodiversity and resilience. This effort was not merely a photo op; it serves as a critical component of a much larger vision. The drive is part of a plan to plant 1.25 crore (12.5 million) trees across the Gandhinagar constituency and 50 lakh (5 million) within Ahmedabad itself. The ultimate goal is to create a greener, healthier, and more sustainable city for generations to come.
