Good News: Portugal's Last Circus Elephant Finds Sanctuary in Alentejo : Julie's New Life of Freedom

For thirty-six years, Julie was part of Portugal’s circus industry. Captured in southern Africa as a calf and brought to Portugal in 1988, she spent decades performing before Portugal’s 2018 ban on wild animals in circuses moved the country toward a final 2024 deadline.

As that deadline arrived, Julie became the last circus elephant, and reportedly the last wild animal still performing in a Portuguese circus. Through a voluntary agreement between the circus and the Pangea Trust, she was moved to the Pangea Sanctuary in the Alentejo region between Vila Viçosa and Alandroal.

Covering about 400 hectares, or nearly 1,000 acres, the sanctuary is designed to reflect the natural habitat of African elephants. Reports say Julie took a mud bath soon after arrival and began roaming in controlled freedom. She is the sanctuary’s first resident, with plans for another elephant, Kariba, to join her from Belgium.
